The Good

  • Network Flexibility
  • Standard Benefits
  • Employer Tools
  • Spanish Language Resources
  • Additional Employee Benefits Options

Network Flexibility

Unum Vision allows you to see a vision care provider and purchase materials at locations of your choice, making it one of the most flexible providers in terms of network.

In addition to being able to see independent optometrists, you can also visit Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, Pearl Vision, Sears, Target, and JCPenney. Check your plan to see which providers are included because not all of these retail companies participate in each Unum vision insurance policy.

Standard Benefits

Unum Vision offers one of the more extensive standard benefits packages in the industry, which includes eye exams, lenses and frames covered in full, and contact lenses in lieu of glasses with no brand restrictions. Glasses coverage includes lenticular and progressive lenses.
Unum's standard plan also offers a discount on LASIK.

Employer Tools

Employers benefit from working with Unum because it offers helpful integrations to automate some tasks for benefits administration like absence management, billing, and evidence of insurance.

Employers can access resources for compliance and employment laws. Employers also benefit from support and resources to help employees with enrollment.

Spanish Language Resources

Unum provides all of its materials and processes claims in Spanish. These materials are not simply translations, but originally written in Spanish. This level of support to Spanish speakers makes Unum stand out as a benefits provider, and a great choice if your employees prefer to communicate in Spanish.

Additional Employee Benefits Options

Employers building a benefits package can offer dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and supplemental health insurance. Supplemental health insurance options include hospital insurance, critical illness insurance, and accident insurance.

With a variety of offerings from Unum, employers can find a variety of benefits to offer employees.

Read your plan very carefully because it seems like they have a trick to scam you out of money. In my experience, most health insurance operates on the calendar year. They, however, only allow you to go to the eye doctor once in a 12 month period. Let's say you started working for a company in November that provided Unum Vision Eye Insurance. If you quit on October of the next year, then you can only go to the eye doctor one time. Most companies, in my experience, would give you a "freebie" if you did it before the end of the year you were hired. Furthermore, their customer service is difficult to work with in my opinion, they have almost no providers in net-work in my opinion, and getting them to send me an ID Card took an act of Congress in my opinion.

They have terrible phone customer service who never provides helpful solutions or accurate information. The website is clunky and to access vision, dental, and general plan information, there's 3 different websites you use and 2 separate logins needed. Their site is often not working properly and difficult to navigate. The websites do not feel intuitive and friendly. Compared to other government and medical web sites, this feels outdated and not user friendly. The entire Unum insurance feels like it has a really small network and finding vision care in network is not easy. If any of these aspects were better I could recommend Unum to others. But with terrible web/app performance, bad customer service that provides inaccurate information, and bad coverage/network, if you can chose, never chose Unum.
