The Good

  • Network Variety
  • Good Plan Features
  • Chief Eye Care Officer
  • Language Support

Network Variety

Spectera's network of providers include eye care professionals in private practice and retail store providers. This variety gives you more options when choosing providers and buying glasses. Other vision insurance plan carriers offer similar network structures, so this variety makes Spectera competitive.

Good Plan Features

From the general information offered on Spectera's site, its vision coverage seems competitive for the industry. Its plans include eye exams and an allowance for eyeglasses or contacts. You'll also benefit from price protection on upgrades like progressive lenses and anti-reflective or photo-chromatic lenses.

Spectera's plans also include discounts for additional pairs of eyewear, laser vision correction through QualSight ® LASIK, and on hearing aids through EPIC Hearing Healthcare. LASIK discounts are common among insurers, but including discounts on hearing aids makes Spectera stand out.

Chief Eye Care Officer

Spectera ensures quality of care with a Chief Eye Care Officer. This oversight helps ensure that you receive quality vision care when you use your Spectera plan. Some other vision insurance providers also oversee care quality in a similar way, so Spectera's analysis of care quality makes it competitive.

Language Support

Spectera offers language support to members who prefer to use their native language instead of English. This language support is offered in accordance with California law, so not all members qualify and not every language is available.

The Bad

  • Limited Online Plan Information
  • Insufficient Customer Insight

Limited Online Plan Information

It's common for insurance companies to offer information about the plans it offers and to make them searchable online.

While general information about Spectera's plans can be found online, information about vision plan types, coverage levels, and costs is not available. It's also unclear from the website how you can find this information. You may need to contact Spectera directly or find another insurance provider.

Insufficient Customer Insight

Best Company has not received many Spectera vision insurance reviews from customers. General conclusions about the customer experience and quality of Spectera's services are not currently available, which means a full recommendation is also not available.

The Bottom Line

While the lack of information on the customer experience and specifics on Spectera's vision plans make it difficult to give a full assessment, the general information offered by Spectera makes it worth exploring further.

The coverage and discounts offered are competitive for the industry. Spectera insurance coverage includes eye exams and allowances for eyeglasses or contacts. Discounts are available for hearing aids and LASIK surgery. Spectera is also dedicated to ensuring a high level of care quality through its Chief Eye Care Officer.

The company also offers assistance in languages other than English in accordance with California law. These factors make Spectera worth researching further.

I would give ZERO stars if possible. I paid for this scam for a year. I paid the higher vision premium so that I could get contacts and glasses annually. The plan paid for my left eye exam only. I had to pay for the right eye out of pocket because I have astigmatism and they do not offer lenses of ANY KIND with toric for astigmatism. Then, I went to order contacts for my left eye only to find out they will not pay for those either because I need multifocal lenses for that eye. They do not offer any lenses for multifocal either. They paid less than $10 for my dental visits. I do not know how this is even legal honestly. It is nothing but a scam. Do not waste your time or money.

My rating is actually 0 stars, but that is not a choice. As a service provider, this company is totally worthless. Their main goal is to delay your claim so that you eventually give up, or someone calls you finally and tells you they are not honoring it. This is a division of United Health Care by the way. Boy, I hope my company never decides to use them for my medical and dental benefits.

This insurance deserves -5. This is the worst vision insurance I have ever seen They don't cover anything regarding the lenses for eyeglasses. What's the point of having vision insurance if everything with the eyeglass lenses is not covered and is considered an add on? It's a complete rip-off joke of insurance.
