The Good

  • Large viewing selection
  • Features and perks
  • Discounts and free trial

Selection

Amazon Prime has over 4,500 movies and television shows for you to choose from.

Additional Perks

Members of Amazon Prime also have access to Prime Music, Prime Photos, Prime Pantry, and Amazon Elements. Customers also have access to free two day shipping on all orders marked with the special Prime icon on Amazon.com.

Parental Controls

Amazon Prime provides quality parental controls, allowing members to set a PIN and viewing restrictions on movies and TV shows.

Student Discount

If you are a student you get six months of Amazon Prime for free, and 50 percent off after that, for as long as you are a student.

Free 30-day Trial

Amazon offers a 30-day free trial to potential customers, allowing them to try out Amazon Prime before making a final decision. Amazon Prime has so many great aspects to their service. For $99/year, subscribers pay less than $9 a month for Amazon Prime's services. This is a very reasonable price for the streaming tv industry. In addition, Amazon Prime gives its members the option to pay a small fee to watch newer/more popular releases so they don't have to wait. Overall, from the large library to the additional Amazon Perks, this service has many great benefits!

The Bad

  • One time large fee
  • Can have additional costs
  • No personalization options

One Time Large Fee

Although, if broken down, Amazon Prime's fee is less than $9 monthly, having to pay $99 all at once can be a lot. Amazon Prime doesn't provide a monthly payment option for members.

Additional Costs

Although Amazon Prime releases content quickly, members have to pay to watch newer episodes & movies from popular series. Costs range from $1.99-$2.99, and movie rentals are $2.99-$6.99.

Personalization

Amazon does not have as many account personalization capabilities as some of its competitors, such as Netflix. Although Amazon Prime has many great features to their service, they do have a few drawbacks, as you can see.  Amazon's main drawback is that you have to pay for an entire year up front, which can be a high price to pay for some people. In addition, they don't have as many personalization controls as Netflix.

The Bottom Line

For regular Amazon consumers, Amazon Prime is an excellent streaming option to look into. However, for those who don't shop a lot on Amazon, and would not utilize the free two day standard shipping, Amazon Prime might not be worth the $99 all-at-once annual price. Overall Amazon Prime has a large selection of movies and TV, with their own Amazon Prime exclusive series.  They provide their members with many additional perks not related to streaming TV, which is a bonus.  Also, they provide discounts to students.

Amazon is a major company that provides a platform to sell many goods and services, the heart of their success is the Amazon Prime membership. However the price of the membership seems to slightly outweigh the benefits you seem to get from it due to delivery delays, difficulty with streaming media, and the higher prices sneaked into Prime members' carts. The membership itself does have a lot to offer, but in reality it is less than what it looks like. On a number scale from 1 to 5 on how useful this membership is, I give it a 2. The delivery time has increased and is sometimes delayed, Prime video is difficult to manage, and prices for prime members have increased slightly than non paying members. Yet, the convenience of having things delivered to the door in a couple days seems to keep many subscribers, including myself. The worth of the membership is up to how and how frequently the member makes use of it.

I ended up giving Amazon Prime 2 stars because it's about my 5th or 6th option when it comes to looking for something to watch. I find it chaotic to use and hard to find something interesting to watch. The biggest problem I have is that there is no ability to mark a movie as having been watched or the option to remove movies that have been watched from your search. About 90% of the time I end up logging out of Amazon Prime due to frustration with not finding anything to watch.

The free shipping is great. The extras are great. What is not great is paying for the membership and then also having to rent some of the movies and shows. The company doesn't need the extra money. I canceled my membership once, and then some time later, wanted to check for availability of an upcoming show to decide if I wanted to restart my membership. The act of opening the app on my TV restarted my membership. I did not appreciate that.

Prime is good if you are going to use all the services. However if you are only using it for the free shipping it is not worth it. I find a lot of the products you can find a local stores for cheaper. Also Amazon is having an issue with getting hacked.

I poorly implemented copy of Netflix. It is included in Prime, otherwise we would not have this. Navigation is not intuitive. It is very difficult to see what content is included for prime members and not included. They make In-app purchases for movies and rentals completely impossible and force you to a desktop, which I have never done and this leaves money on the table for them. It needs a complete overhaul

Not the best selection , this is my 3rd choice of streaming tv. Netflix has more up to date movies.

used to be better—it’s pretty ridiculous to have a streaming service that both requires payment for some titles and requires payment to remove ads. i had to cancel my membership because it’s just not worth it.

Pricing seems steep. Often could not find anything interesting to watch. Hated the only being able to see 1 season of a TV show for free after which you are forced to stop watching or pay a very steep price per episode.

I pay well over $100 a year, but you have a lot of movies that I have to pay additional to watch. this is ridiculous. if you have to pay more to watch it then it shouldn't be added to movie list for account holders.

Really annoying with all the little different subscriptions you need to get to watch certain shows. There are some british comedy shows I want watch but even though I have an amazon prime I have to pay for the "britbox" in order to watch them.

While we love Amazon Prime for shopping purposes, its streaming service leaves much to be desired when compared to Netflix and Hulu. The variety of tv shows and movies is outdated and we have a hard time finding anything to watch, which is why we rarely use it to stream.

Like my Amazon Prime options but this is not one of them. Feels like a lot of NetFlix. I could do without this video streaming service. Amazon movie and show options are very limited and not what I would expect from a large company.

Smaller selection compared to its competitors but also comes along with many other perks all in all if you're going to use all of the services very well worth it

Don’t really use it bc I forget its there. Sucks you still have to pay for movies even though you are a prime member. Not really sure how great the selection is but I usually use other streaming services.

Amazon Prime started out wonderful but then became useless. I got to the point where I couldn't even login. Customer service sucks.

For the money they charge you would think you would have access to all their content but they want you to pay for certain series.

A good deal of the movies are not any good, if you want to watch a good movie you actually have to pay more for each one?

Amazon Prime has an ok selection and it's really inconvenient that you can't cast to a Chromecast and it's hard to get the app to stream on an android device.

I feel like the search interface for streaming TV and movies needs to be made more user friendly. I rarely ever choose Amazon for my streaming needs.

Amazon prime is a joke. You’re lucky if half of the things ordered arrive when promised.

Low selection of titles, and their mobile viewing app takes up a lot of space and frequently has issues with subtitles.
