There are many solar companies out there, but which one actually provides the most value and best customer service? We've made it our mission to find out.
After conducting exhaustive research on the solar industry and gathering hundreds of Sunrun reviews, we've weighed the good and the bad and discovered Sunrun to be one of the top installers of solar panels based on a variety of criteria points.
Sunrun, which is the nation’s largest residential solar, storage, and energy service company, has installed over 1,600 megawatts of solar power and helped hundreds of thousands of consumers in 19 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico to gain energy independence.
Sunrun is the pioneer of the solar-as-a-service model and continues to drive innovation of solar generation, storage, and energy services and technologies. The rooftop solar provider's mission is to create a planet run by the sun.
To fit customer needs, Sunrun offers several financing options, including solar leases, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), prepayments, outright purchases, and loans.
Sunrun solar lease and PPA options give customers the chance to reap the benefits of a home solar system for zero to little upfront cost.
The prepayment option features all of the same benefits as the lease option, except the customer doesn't have to worry about the hassle of monthly payments.
Purchasing a Sunrun solar system outright provides customers with long-term savings, while financing a Sunrun solar system through a loan allows customers to make payments to own their system, which provides long-term benefits.
Sunrun understands that every customer's home, lifestyle, and savings goal is unique.
As a result, the company customizes every system it installs to the customer's needs using its own proprietary Automated Site Modeling design technology. With just a few pieces of information and satellite imagery of the rooftop, Sunrun’s Automated Site Modeling software quickly designs a custom solar system to maximize energy production.
Sunrun strives to make switching to clean energy as simple and hassle-free as possible for its customers. The rooftop solar provider saves time by taking care of everything from scheduling to permitting and allowing people to follow their installation progress through the mySunrun mobile app. The design and installation process is as follows:
If customers choose to lease or obtain a PPA, Sunrun will own the system and, therefore, is responsible for all maintenance and repairs of the system. Additionally, Sunrun will refund customers if the panels installed on their roof ever underperform.
Other benefits of Sunrun's product include a 10-year warranty on systems that are purchased and up to a 25-year warranty on systems that are leased. Each solar customer's Sunrun contract also includes a roof warranty, which protects the roof from leaks or holes.
In addition, Sunrun provides its solar customers with daily system monitoring for no additional fee. The company's monitoring team oversees all all Sunrun systems and keeps an eye on production levels. If something happens or if performance dips, Sunrun will contact you as soon as possible to get things fixed.
Sunrun provides a U.S.-based customer care team that is ready to answer questions and help resolve any issues that may arise.
Sunrun offers a battery storage option that can be purchased or leased called Brightbox. With Brightbox, customers can enjoy safe, clean, and reliable backup power in the event of a blackout.
Brightbox also helps customers manage electricity costs by seamlessly optimizing when a home uses electricity generated by solar panels, stored in the battery, or from the grid.
Sunrun provides an abundance of helpful information on its website and strives to be very transparent with its customers. The company's website includes detailed solar education and FAQ sections, a helpful Guarantee page, and an informative "Plans and Services" page that will help customers better understand Sunrun's products and how to start taking advantage of solar power.
When it comes to solar installation, Sunrun is one of the most experienced companies in the solar industry. In fact, the company is one of the few solar installers that has installed over 1,600 megawatts of solar energy.
As a result, Sunrun has offset 3.7 million tons of carbon emissions and helped more than 240,000 customers to control their electricity bills.
Sunrun currenty offers solar energy services in the following states and territories:
Sunrun's website includes a variety of articles and helpful, easy-to-digest resources, including information on solar panels, plans and services, the cost of solar, warranties, installations, rebates and incentives, net metering, local information, solar education, and more.
A majority of Sunrun's installations are performed in-house, meaning that Sunrun employees will install the solar systems themselves, which is ideal. Occasionally, the company will contract other installers to work on homes that are too remote for Sunrun itself to reach.
While Sunrun does train and approve these third-party contractors before they work on a home, this outsourcing strategy has often led to inconsistencies in performance upon installation. Consequently, customer satisfaction concerning the installation quality and overall experience varies.

I'm a Costco member and I made an appointment with them and when they came out to my home, they were very courteous, on time, and were very knowledgeable. I've had a few issues along the way, but they called me back right away or emailed me back right away and were able to take care of any complications so that's very good customer service. The installation was very smooth and quick. All the gentlemen who did the service were courteous, very friendly, and very nice. They put it up in no time and explained everything to me when I needed to look for it. It was a really good experience. The equipment they put in the box on the side of the house and it's very easy to read the instructions. Everything that they've done has been very well handled. They've been very honest from the beginning.
The members are very professional. I had a very good experience doing business with them. The installation process went very well. They arrived on time. They were professional. They answered my questions and were considerate. They cleaned and explained to me what was involved. I was very happy with the overall experience. It has operated flawlessly. They did all the hard work, I just had to approve it and the whole experience was painless and went extremely well.
I have a good amount of energy for the whole house and I don't have to pay that much. They had to put a new roof on and do a lot of steps before they put in mine. I check how all the panels and they do great.
They're very helpful in how they provided us with details. We had SunRun come out several times to get things straightened out with electrical aspects and the connections. They responded promptly and courteously and effectively. They haven't come out to clean the solar panels which are full of trash and dirt. It's been working very well and when we had power outages, we were grateful to have the electrical connections.
I did have to have them come back and I had to sort of jump through hoops to get them to come back and do some touch up painting. They said they'd be back in two weeks and never did show up. It took some questioning on my part to get them to come back to finish the job.
They did what they said they were going to do and as far as I'm concerned, SunRun went above and beyond. They were working up on the roof when it was really really hot and they got it done when they were supposed to. I thought installation was fairly efficient. They had to leave and come back at one point and they were at it for like a week. But they were done by the time they said they were going to be done so that's not a problem. We haven't had any problems with it and if we do have problems SunRun will come and take care of it for us.
They always follow up after the installation and see how we are doing and if we have any questions.
All of the representatives are very helpful. They were very informative and very professional. They helped me make sure that I was getting all the best benefits from the solar panels and everything that was in place. I had so many questions about the service and how it worked and I would question all of this, and they were very patient and very kind and explained everything thoroughly. I've had absolutely no problems and no hiccups or issues whatsoever.
We interviewed two or three companies and we just like the feedback that we got from the sales reps better from SunRun. Installation was very smooth and on time. Since January, we've only had to pay a little over $100 for electricity when we were paying about $300 a month.
They work very well with planning everything out the way that they suggest they would. Installation was slightly delayed waiting on the roofing to be done and then everything went as planned. Everything works exactly as advertised. They did exactly what they suggested should happen and it worked out well.
Customer service was good. He answered all our questions. There was one person that knew what he was doing. He knew what he was doing and similar to what we wanted.
The SunRun system is not producing enough electricity. I was told it would produce more. I'm paying more now total than I did the previous year.
It's functioning improperly and they keep charging me money everything month. The equipment does not function properly.
SunRun got back to us right away and installed it right away. I have three panels because I thought we would get more from it. It just doesn't seem to have lowered our bills I don't think.
Installation went very well and everything was done on time. It met all the expectations. The website is very good and easy to understand and everything works really good.
I did have to move some of the units further away from the gutter because I felt it was too close for the run off. We haven't had any problems with anything.
Everything's been seamless since installation other than one equipment failure but that was fixed quickly. SunRun has been dependable.
The installation process was intrusive and complicated.
I really have had only one issue right after it was first installed and someone came out and corrected the problem. The panels are in position and doing what it's supposed to be doing. I wish that the installation part would have been a little quicker but other than that, everything went fine.
They have kept their words and their promises. The installation went very well.
They're always there when you need them. Every time we call, which we haven't had much problems, they took care of that pretty quickly so we haven't had any problems since then. The installation was really smooth. It was quick and easy on time. We have twenty six panels and we're producing enough to handle all the electricity so it must be working pretty well though.
They kept me apprised of every step of the process and it made it incredibly easy and smooth for me and for my solar panels and power in a very quick time frame. Everything was planned ahead of time and scheduled. They showed up on schedule and everything was done within a couple of hours. It looks great and they cleaned everything up and it was beautiful. Our town inspector came out to take a look and they were very impressed with the amount of solar power the panels were collecting when it was still early in the season, in early March, and that to me was a really good time. These were really great technology.
They did a good job. One thing that I didn't get was one of my panels was not with the right battery channels. They really pushed it through as soon as they could and the installers work really fast. The circuits that they told me were going to be working aren't working.
There was an issue where they came over and said they turned it on and it turned out a week and a half later it still wasn't turned on. Another rep had to come by and actually turn it on. The installation process is very fast and precise and they even actually checked with me up on the roof itself. It was great. I've never had an issue with it at all. Anytime that it under performed, we received a check that would make up the difference.
The overall process was very very good. SunRun came and basically put the whole panels on the roof in one day with staying connected. Everything was done in a day.
We're not happy with the results we are getting with our solar panels because I think we're paying more for the solar panels on our electricity than we would have just with the electricity and solar. The installation was very quick and easy. No hassles, no problems and was done in less than half a day I think. Their customer service representatives do pretty well. I think we're going to have to review our bills based on what we've been paying for our electricity and size of our house and they'll make a determination if we need more.
They first came out and looked at the roof and the sun exposure and then they drew up a plan and then they came out in installed it. Everything works the way it is supposed to. SunRun did the work properly and efficiently. The system works well, however I had a question about the placement of solar panels and they did not adequately addressed it.
Okay I’m advising nobody get solar it’s a racket! 🏸 I got sunrun 1 year ago here’s how it works they average your 12 month Edison bill mine came out to $132.80 a month. So that’s what I pay every month. The salesman lies he said you’re going to get a bill from Edison but just ignore that I keep on asking him why ignore it we don’t have to pay It he just kept on telling me don’t worry about it . But the truth is you do have to worry about it because you get a bill from Edison to mine ranged $14 - $24 a month and then at the end of the year you get a settlement bill and that ranges from $311. For that last month of the year and another thing I wasn’t using my a/c it has been broken for 4years any power you use before and after the sun goes down you are getting charged from Edison! And if you use your air conditioning at night you will get a big bill. Here is what I use to pay a year (no a/c) $1851.00 Edison Here’s what I pay now mind you no A/C I’ll brake it down for you! 1. Sunrun a year $1593.60 and it will go up 6% a year 2.Edison a year $506.98 that will be more if get the A/C fixed and use it. Ok lets se my savings What I pay now $2100.58 Used to Pay $1851.00 Savings -$249.58 nothing I Owe I’m in the hole $249.58 With no ——————— A / C I’m pissed I want to solar panels off my ——————— roof
I had made an appointment with SunSun for a consultation and they never showed up, not even a call. I am very disappointed .
After 6 years with 8 panels, we had to have the panels removed for a new roof installation. I live in the San Francisco bay area but the project manager who manages this area lives in a different state. SunRun quickly took off the panels, but getting them back on has been a nightmare!! First there were two missed re-install dates – scheduled, but no one showed up. I called multiple times to try to reschedule, but only got lots of pleasantries and nothing scheduled. Then the PM stopped returning my calls. The customer service reps all seem very nice and they come across like they are trying to help, but in the end, they can only do so much and they basically tell you what you want to hear ... we'll get the install scheduled "tomorrow", "next week", etc. or "we are escalating this job" ... and still nothing happens. After 2 ½ months Sunrun eventually sub-contracted the work to another solar company. It took them a month to get the equipment needed for the install. When the techs came to install the panels, they did not have the right equipment! I have to wait another month to get them installed. I asked Sunrun about the contractual agreement to un-install and re-install the panels. The Sunrun rep told me they only agreed to a time frame to take off the panels, they are not contractually obligated to provide customer service.
We’ve had SunRun for approx 18 months and wish to GOD I’d never heard of them! Salesman did not take prior 12 months APS bill to determine usage just arbitrarily put 1000kwh when in reality we use over 1800kwh so we have their $121 a month bill PLUS another $250^ APS bill monthly. If we wanted to pay $500+ a month we’d never have gone with SunRun. Now I’m being ignored with no return calls or emails to remedy the issue yet they continue to send emails from collections Dept, refuse to pay bill until they fix THEIR screw up Or better yet get this crap off my roof! So disgusted and nothing worse than a LIAR
They have good reviews they offers 10 years guaranteed on the roof and they work with Costco which we are a member and we get discount
This company is a sham! The first questions they ask is dealing with my personal financial information. They are rude! If I had financial issues would I be calling about Solar Energy add to my home? They refused to give me any info unless they delve into my financial situation! Amazing! maybe others are ok with this but I am not! Horrible. When I said I do not feel at this time that info is required...they basically said sorry....& hung up! I am livid!
Save money Q. How to have power when PG&E tun off the power
Very efficient and kept me informed at all times
Your pricing could be a little lower, and a storage system to run the entire house would be nice
Love my lower power bills and the ease of working with the staff.
I was told something about the product and told something different after I purchased the product
NOTHING BUT GOOD SERVICE AND HAVE REDUCED OUR ELECTRIC BILL BY 1/3
This company is not legit! They lie directly to your face and think nothing of it. So, let me begin. My salesperson, Jason T promised a $500 sign-up reward and offered my referrer $500, a total of $1000. I was told by my salesperson that they had a special promotion going on at the time. Fast forward 3 months, my system was just connected the other day. Since myself and referrer were lied to, I want out of my contract. They informed me that I could not get out of the contract until 25 years, even though they lied. I do not want to do business with a company that blatantly lies to your face. Unfortunately, the reward amounts are not in the contract. The referrer was at the table with me when the salesperson offered the sign-up reward of $500 and referrer amount of $500. So, will need to consult a lawyer since a witness was there when rewards were offered. I also spoke with a case manager who was very rude and nasty. It was as if she was reading from a script. She kept repeating the same thing over and over again. I asked to speak with a higher level manager and she told me that I had to deal with her. She also kept interrupting me when I was talking. During the sit down with the Salesperson, I specifically asked about battery in case of blackouts. He told me battery back-up would be provided. My system was connected and turned on last week. When I called to inquire if my battery was added, I was told no. They said they were out of batteries but I could get on the waiting list for one. This is scary! What else did they not do but didn’t tell me about. If your going to deal with this company, I recommend that any and everything that your promised needs to be in writing. I would strongly agree not dealing with them since they are unprofessional and lie! Happy Solar hunting!
Wasn't happy with what they told me was a bit misleading think... Did the math and price would be more then NV energy with their rate increase not worth it.
There support takes a long time to respond and the repair they promised has still not been delivered
The battery they sold us requires that we use 4 100 foot extension cords to provide power to 4 limited areas of the house during a power outage.
we have had no problems with the service once the install was complete. There were some bugs in the process but that was the utility company not following through
Love the panels and installation but once installed I never got a call back to help set up the app. Was told you can monitor each panel and it performance which was a lie.
I haven't received imput on how the system is functioning
Because they are a very well run company. There crews are efficient and conscious of their work.
Well when I was selling my house I would not receive updates from the customer service department regarding the service being switched. I actually had to contact my sale person to get me an update. Then I paid my last bill and a week later Sunrun deducted the payment t again and so I sent a copy of the duplicate payment information to customer service in July of this year. I ha e not heard from them, have not received my refund of the duplicate payment and I just don't have time to hang on the phone
satisfied and no complain so far and my electric bill went down.
They are great as long as you don't have an issue or question.
