  • What’s Covered
  • Holistic and Alternative Coverage
  • Exotic Pet Insurance
  • Annual or Per-Incident Deductible
  • 24/7 Vet Helpline

What’s Covered

Nationwide offers three central plans for pet insurance, each with increasing coverage: Pet Wellness, Major Medical, and Whole Pet with Wellness. Depending on what type of coverage is needed pet parents can view what’s covered on the Nationwide Pet Insurance website.

Nationwide Pet Insurance provides pet owners with an easy to read sample condition chart for what would and wouldn’t be covered under each of its plans. Here are a few of the conditions and treatments that are covered by each of the plans, however, this is not the full list.

Pet Wellness

The Pet Wellness plan covers exam fees and tests, flea/heartworm prevention, and vaccinations.

  • Deworming
  • Heartworm prevention
  • Microchipping
  • Vaccinations
  • Wellness bloodwork
  • Wellness exam

Major Medical

The Major Medical plan covers exams, lab tests, X-rays, prescriptions, surgeries and hospitalizations, chronic conditions, some hereditary and congenital conditions (although a waiting period does apply).

  • Abrasions
  • Allergic Reaction
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Foreign object in the stomach
  • Kennel coughs
  • Lung infection
  • Lymph node cancer
  • Skin cancer
  • Skin cyst
  • Skin tumor
  • Underactive thyroid levels

Whole Pet with Wellness

Cats and dogs under the Whole Pet with Wellness plan have all the coverage from the Pet Wellness and Major Medical plan plus more.

  • Addison’s disease
  • Bronchitis
  • Cesarean section
  • Cherry eye
  • Corneal ulcer
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Gingivitis
  • Heart failure
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Lyme disease
  • Prescribed nutritional supplements
  • Prescribed therapeutic pet foods
  • Separation anxiety
  • Spay or neuter

Whether pet owners are looking for a plan to protect their furry friend against accidents or they want a comprehensive coverage plan, Nationwide Pet has plenty of options.

Holistic and Alternative Coverage

While Nationwide Pet Insurance provides coverage for more traditional treatments and therapies, the company also allows pet owners who want to turn to more natural techniques, philosophies and treatments. Coverage includes acupuncture, as well as chiropractic and laser therapy. Many pet owners opt to try alternative and holistic therapies to treat anxiety issues, improve overall health, and even as cancer treatments.

Exotic Pet Insurance

Something that genuinely sets Nationwide Pet Insurance apart from other pet insurance providers is its Avian and Exotic Pet Plan. Pet insurance policies for birds, small animals, and other exotic pets are extremely rare in the industry. Nationwide Pet boasts that its affordable exotic pet insurance plan covers accidents and illnesses along with examinations, lab fees, prescriptions, X-rays, hospitalization, and more.

Nationwide Pet Insurance covers most birds and exotic pets:

  • Amphibians
  • Chameleons
  • Chinchillas
  • Ferrets
  • Geckos
  • Gerbils
  • Goats
  • Guinea pigs
  • Hamsters
  • Hedgehogs
  • Iguanas
  • Lizards
  • Mice
  • Opossums
  • Potbellied pigs
  • Rats
  • Rabbits
  • Snakes
  • Sugar gliders
  • Tortoises
  • Turtles

Annual or Per-Incident Deductible

Annual deductible are offered with the Whole Pet with Wellness plan, My Pet Protection plans, Medical and Major Medical plans, and Nationwide Pet’s injury plan. With these specific plans, the selected deductible only needs to be fulfilled once per policy term.

A per-incident deductible is applied to the Superior, Standard, and the Avian & Exotic Pet plans. There is a $50 deductible that applies to each unrelated accident or injury per policy term.

There is no deductible for claims submitted under the Nationwide Pet Feline Select plan or under the wellness plan and riders.

24/7 Vet Helpline

Free to all members of Nationwide Pet, pet parents can receive live veterinary care and guidance about their pet's health. Members can ask questions about their pets general health or they can receive help identifying urgent care needs.

While the Vet Helpline is an advantageous feature, if a pet is in need of veterinary assistance or immediate care, pet parents should visit a clinic or emergency provider. Nationwide Pet Insurance members can use any licensed veterinarian in the world.

The Bad

  • Claims Reimbursement Process
  • Enrollment Age

Claims Reimbursement Process

Nationwide Pet owners will pay for their pet’s veterinary care up front and will be reimbursed after they submit a claim. It can take Nationwide up to 30 days to process a claim you file, which is on the longer end for a processing period. Furthermore, when you get reimbursed for an expense, you'll receive the reimbursement via a check in the mail rather than the much faster direct deposit.

Enrollment Age

If your pet is already enrolled with Nationwide, then coverage will never be removed from the pet unless you cancel it. If, however, you want to enroll your pet for the first time, you can only do so if your pet is under age ten. Pets older than ten years old cannot qualify for Nationwide's plans, and this is a comparatively low age for enrollment eligibility.

The Bottom Line

The weaknesses for Nationwide Pet Insurance are fairly low-impact and don't affect most customer needs. If a pet is over ten years old, for example, then Nationwide obviously is not the right choice. For most other pet parents, however, this company is a solid option for pet health insurance. It is backed by an overall insurance provider that has an excellent reputation and a positive customer mindset that aims in helping pet owners with expensive vet bills.

Nationwide's customer resources and flexible plans set the company apart from its competitors. The fact that it covers exotic pets (more than just cats and dogs), chronic conditions, and a few hereditary and congenital conditions, is a significant benefit that expands its customer base as well.

Nationwide Pet offers three plans all with substantial coverage, so pet owners can have peace of mind knowing that their cats, dogs, and other exotic pets are covered through a comprehensive pet insurance provider.

My beloved Doberman encountered some serious health issues. Nationwide came through big time with coverage for my claims, which took a huge concern off my shoulders and allowed me to focus on my pets wellness and recovery. Their client service folks are top notch, responsive, well informed and focused on the customer. AAA+

We have six large dogs and vet bills can get expensive. Nationwide Pet saved us over $5,000 when one of our dogs was hit by a car and required a pin to be inserted in a hind leg.

I paid for the best insurance possible with nationwide to ensure i felt a sense of safety and security. I took my dog to the vet because he was having stomach issues and had a cold. We had to send his stool for testing and had a full medical exam to see what was up and he prescribed some medicine for us. This all cost me $450. Nationwide has a $250 deductible. I was expecting $200 back and they sent me $6 saying his cold and stomach issues were a pre-existing condition they wouldn't cover. What a sense of shock and disappointment that a vet visit suddenly cost me so much money. Nationwide made me go through a dispute process and still denied my claim despote the vet saying as well it was a in the moment stomach bug and cold. He's a 8 month old puppy! Terrible pet insurance company. Avoid at ALL COSTS!

Canceled today to find a company that actually cares. Applied through my employer, provided all medical records for my dogs, confirmed no pre-existing conditions, and was told my policy would go into effect in 30 days. Well, my dog desperately needed a teeth cleaning so near the end of the 30 day period I paid for the pre-dental exam, that way once insurance kicked in I could take him in for the full cleaning immediately. Well, after insurance kicks in and I get his teeth cleaned I submit a claim for the full cleaning and they say because I got the pre-exam a few days before the activation date it qualifies as a pre-existing condition. The insurance wouldn't have covered the pre-exam anyway, that's why I paid for it and we confirmed he had no pre-existing conditions before that. Obviously, I would've waited another couple of days if this little loophole was made clear by the mountain of documents they sent me or by any single agent at all, but then they'd actually have to do their job and cover my pets. Absolutely ridiculous, I'm finding an insurance provider that will actually do what I pay them for and take care of my pets. Glad I found out they suck early so they didn't get much of my money.

Nationwide insurance is a scam! Please don't waste your money thinking that your pet is covered under their insurance. They will try every possible way not to pay you. They swindled out of paying for my corgi surgery, saying that it was pre-existing--even when I have submitted my dogs' medical history that showed my dog did not have any illnesses until recently. I should have stayed with precious pet insurance. It was a mistake that will cost my dog's life. If you love your pet, then don't use Nationwide. I will never use them again and continue to spread Nationwide insurance scam to everyone I know until they change their deceitful business practices.

This company is completely unethical, my dog started having seizures one month ago and they denied this claim because they stated it was a pre-existing condition. My pet has never been diagnosed or treated for seizures in the past. Nationwide claims that they received medical records from a vet hospital that my dog was at one time for a swollen eye and in those records the vet stated that my dog has seizures every 2 years. I did not provide those medical records from that vet and that vet did not treat my pet for seizures. I do not know why that is stated in the medical records, but I can't even confirm the statement because Nationwide refused to give me the medical records with that statement. They claim that I have no right to see MY OWN DOG's medical records that they solicit without my knowledge or consent. I have had multiple claims denied with Nationwide on the basis of pre-existing conditions, that seems to be their easiest way to not have to pay out any claims because there is nothing you can do to prove it otherwise. Nationwide enjoys taking my money, but they sure don't like to pay.

Very bad company. They advertise that they pay 90 percent of all claims I had them for almost a year. I filed my first claim which I had to pay 250 for the shots and exam. A few months later I took my dog in to get his teeth cleaned and the vet pulled a couple of teeth. I paid my bill $380. I sent my claim into Nationwide and instead of sending back a reimbursement check they ask for past vet records and I sent them in twice with fax confirmations. I got 3 letters saying they were “reviewing “ my case. I called and ask about my claim taking so long and they said they could move it up to the top of the others. I ask why things were taking so long and they said they were very understaffed. I canceled they day and never did get a check. Very sorry company!!

I have whole pet wellness and major medical. After covering my dogs medication for the past 6 years. Now they sat its preexisting and they won't cover it. My dog developed pancreatitis a few months ago. The vet prescribed special food that should be covered. They paid for 3 months and decided it was preexisting and won't pay. My premium is 105.00 per month for these plans

This is a SCAM. They do not cover ANYTHING. Vaccines, check-ups, ANY diagnostic testing, treatments, or medicine. What does that even leave to be covered? Before denying your claim, they will make you jump through dozens of hoops & submit a mountain of medical records knowing full-well from the moment they receive the receipt that it will not be covered. I will NEVER be purchasing ANY kind of insurance through Nationwide because they're clearly a disgusting company just trying to rob people blind.

Nationwide used to be a good company, but now they are awful. They have taken my money and left my pets uninsured and exposed after quietly canceling my plan - a very convenient red tape issue that happened as my girls started getting older and needing more care. I had to wait three months to reinsure one of my cats only to be told they wouldn't insure her anymore because they said she had illnesses that she doesn't have. Now I need to find another insurer and my girl has been uncovered for a long time now. My advice - take your business elsewhere.

I've been with this service for many years with a healthy Cocker Spaniel. She's 13 and just had to have both eyes removed due to a traumatic collision with another dog which caused her to go blind. She did have early on set Glaucoma but they covered zero percent of the bill after all these years for paying for this service. I would highly suggest not using Nationwide. Look elsewhere for coverage or just start a separate bank account for your pets and throw $50 a month to cover any medical bills. Very disappointing!!!!

They exclude everything, its not worth 90.00 a month for my older dog now. I have been with them for many years, but it seems the older she gets the more I pay and the less I received in reimbursements. Then after I cancelled the policy they had the guts to grab 100.73 two days AFTER I cancelled!!! I sent a complaint into BBB after I contacted them asking them to reimburse me, that they had no right taking it out of my account.

Nationwide has been such a disappointment. They say the cover all these things but never pay out for them. I have both the medical and wellness for my dog. They get their shots, prescriptions, yearly check ups and I have never seen a check back for any of it! What's the point of paying you when you don't do anything?

I've had Nationwide for my dogs for over 6 years and am so frustrated with them. The list of excludes is ridiculous. I feel like I am stuck with this company if I want to keep pet insurance because of the age of my dogs. I would not recommend this company and if you do go with them be sure to read their fine print.
