The Good

  • Annual Deductible
  • Mobile App
  • Cat and Dog Insurance
  • Healthy Paws Refer-A-Friend

Annual Deductible

Healthy Paw’s annual deductible means members only have to meet a deductible once per year. The company allows members to choose the deductible price that works best for them. Prices can be set at $100, $250, and $500.

If members choose the $100 deductible, they will receive a higher payout per incident, but will also be paying a higher monthly premium.

Mobile App

With the Healthy Paws mobile app, members can simply take a pick of their invoice, submit it through the app and Healthy Paws will do the rest. The app also lets members upload pet photos, update billing information, review policy details, check a claim status, and provides instant access to the Pet Care blog.

Cat and Dog Insurance

Healthy Paws offers coverage for young kittens to 5-year old cats. After enrolling a cat, members will have a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses, as well as a 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia.

Cat Insurance
The Healthy Paws cat insurance plans cover your cat from nose to tail. Coverage may include the following:

  • Illnesses
  • Accidents
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Cancer
  • Diagnostic treatment
  • X-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds
  • Surgery
  • Hospitalization
  • Prescription medications
  • Emergency care
  • Specialty care
  • Alternative treatment

Dog Insurance
Pet owners can start protecting their puppy at just 8-weeks old; for dogs enrolled before their sixth birthday, hip dysplasia coverage is included with no extra costs. As dogs get older, they’re likely to develop hereditary and congenital conditions which can result in expensive treatments. Healthy Paws allows members to enroll their dogs in a plan up until the dog is 14 years old.

After enrolling a dog, policyholders will have a short 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses and a 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia.

Dog health insurance plans can protect puppies and dogs against injuries, illnesses, genetic conditions and more. Plan coverage can include the following:

  • Illnesses
  • Accidents
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Cancer
  • Diagnostic treatment
  • X-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds

The Bad

  • Coverage Restrictions
  • Lack of Routine Care Coverage

Coverage Restrictions

Both cat and dog insurance policies don’t include coverage for pre-existing conditions, examination fees, or preventative care (annual check-ups, vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures or teeth cleaning).

Healthy Paws does not reimburse members for costs, fees or expenses for elective procedures, boarding, behavioral modification, training, therapy, or medications for behavioral modification.
Healthy Paws also excludes the expenses for after a pet passes away. Cremation and burial are not eligible for coverage.

Lack of Routine Care Coverage

Healthy Paws only provides coverage for unexpected accidents and illnesses. Although most pet insurance providers only cover unforeseen events in their base policies, most give the option to add a wellness or routine care package for an additional fee. Healthy Paws does not have this option.

The Bottom Line

Healthy Paws is a great option for pet owners looking for a simple pet insurance plan that brings peace of mind and covers unexpected accidents and illnesses. While the company doesn’t offer much in extra features, this allows the monthly premiums to be lower. Although, even with only one plan, Healthy Paws has decent medical care coverage for both cats and dogs. The mobile app is handy for pet owners who are busy and don’t want to take the time to fill out a claim form. All members have to do is take a picture of their invoice and submit it.

Healthy Paws non-profit foundation has helped hundreds of pet rescues and animal shelters care for sick, homeless pets through the Every Quote Gives Hope™ medical grant program.

Members can contact Healthy Paws customer service via email or by phone. However, they do not have 24/7 customer service. The hours are as follows:

  • Monday-Friday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST
  • Saturday-Sunday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM PST

I purchased Healthy Paws insurance for a 6 year old cat that I rescued. She had an ear infection on her medical chart (once) and they excluded any further problem with her ears. They don't pay any wellness exams or vet fees, but overall after my selected deductible, the monthly fee was reasonable and they have been prompt with paying my claims. Their representatives are very helpful when you call them. However, my cat had an infection recently and they covered most of the expenses quickly. I gave them a 4 only because they recently raised my monthly rate. This seems a little suspicious after having the coverage less than a year and after my last claim was paid. However, I would recommend this insurance for decent coverage and prompt claim payments.

When it comes to pet insurance, lots of companies will try to over price you; that is not the case with healthy paws. I have had this insurance for my cat for over a year now and their coverage options are amazing! I will continue to use this insurance, as it has saved me hundreds of dollars from the vet.

Had this insurance on my last dog. It seemed very expensive, but when my dog died, the insurance covered all costs associated with my dog and cremation.
