With ASPCA Pet Health Insurance members can select the coverage that works best for them and their loyal companion. Pet owners can have peace of mind knowing that ASPCA’s pet insurance policies cover accidents, illness and pet parents can even add on preventive care packages if they want.

The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is entirely dedicated to helping pet parents take the best possible care of their animal companions. The company believes that pet insurance aides in this goal as it makes veterinary care more affordable.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is provided by Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group.

The Good

  • Complete Coverage
  • Accident & Preventive Care Coverage
  • Claim Submission Time
  • Multi-Pet Discount
  • Horse Insurance

Complete Coverage

The ASPCA’s Complete Coverage plan offers coverage for accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions (heart disease, IVDD, or hip dysplasia) and behavioral issues (anxiety or compulsive behavior); there is even coverage for exam fees, as well as diagnostics, and treatments. The company provides coverage for even the most advanced treatments, like costly surgeries, chemotherapy, stem-cell therapy, and acupuncture. Members can also customize their annual limit, reimbursement percentage, and the annual deductible. Members can visit any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada.

Accident & Preventive Care Coverage

ASPCA knows that some pet parents want a buffer in case their pet gets hurt. That’s why ASPCA offers an Accident Only plan. Accident coverage helps take care of the costs associated with injuries and emergencies that are related to accidents. This includes torn ligaments, bit wounds, cuts, broken bones, lodged foreign objects and toxic ingestions. The plan does include coverage for exam fees, diagnostics, and treatments.

Cat and dog owners can add Preventive Care to their base plan for just a little extra per month. This will cover annual wellness exams, vaccines, screenings, flea and heartworm prevention, and deworming. Members can visit any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada.

Claim Submission Time

ASPCA allows pet owners to submit a claim 270 days after their pet’s visit to the vet. This is incredibly generous, as most pet insurance companies give pet owners only 90 days to submit a claim. Also, there is no limit for claim submissions.

Multi-Pet Discount

Pet parents with two or more pets on their account, will get a 10 percent discount on each premium.

Horse Insurance

One of ASPCA's unique aspects is that the company offers equine insurance. Horse owners have the option between two coverage plans.

Colic + Accidents

  • Colic - Impaction, displacement, spasmodic, enteritis, and more
  • Accidents - Cuts, hoof abscesses, toxic ingestions, injuries from trailer accidents and more

Colic + Accidents + Illnesses

  • Colic - Impaction, displacement, spasmodic, enteritis, and more
  • Accidents - Cuts, hoof abscesses, toxic ingestions, injuries from trailer accidents and more
  • Illnesses - Cushing's Disease, strangles, cancer, hereditary conditions and more

Horse owners can add on a preventive care plan to alleviate the costs of vaccines, dental floating, and annual wellness exams.

The Bad

  • Not Covered

Not Covered

Within the industry, pet insurance companies do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. The ASPCA definition of a pre-existing condition is as follows, “..as a health problem that occurs before coverage is effective or during a waiting period.” Cosmetic procedures (tail docking, ear cropping, and claw removal) and Breeding costs (expenses associated with pregnancy and breeding) are not covered. Members should also be aware of these other excluded costs:

  • Boarding
  • Experimental or investigational treatments or medications
  • Grooming or grooming supplies
  • Housecall fees
  • Non-medical supplies
  • Supplements and vitamins used for prevention or general health maintenance (even if prescribed or dispensed by a veterinarian)

The Bottom Line

ASPCA offers members quite a few options when it comes to pet insurance. Pet owners can pay more for a comprehensive coverage plan or they can choose to have a cushion in case their pet gets hurt. The option to have additional coverage for preventative care is also a nice feature.

Like most pet insurance companies, the ASPCA has conditions where a pet will not be covered. However, unless customers go into a sample policy, they will only see a few of the conditions that are excluded. Potential members should view a sample policy to see all the other excluded costs and make sure that it is still right for them.

The ASPCA pet insurance has solid coverage for accidents and unexpected illnesses. However, there are quite a few exclusions to be aware of before choosing this company as your pet’s health insurance provider.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is a great option for covering pets' needs. The options they provide and pricing is decent, but their customer service could be improved. Overall, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is a great benefit for younger, older or unhealthy pets.
