The Good

  • Demo account
  • Great features
  • Wide variety of currencies
Buxfer offers a live demo account for you to play around with before you decide whether or not you want to sign up. It helps you visualize how you might use Buxfer. When you do set up your Buxfer account, you have the option to log in with one of your other accounts (Google, Yahoo, Facebook, or Microsoft) if you like, which makes signing up extremely speedy. The dashboard has a clean design: it looks good and it loads quickly. Buxfer is a personal finance website that offers many good free features and two upgraded paid plans. The following are some highlights of Buxfer we like:
  • Live demo to test the software before you sign up
  • Customizable tags to personally categorize expenses
  • Website optimized for use on mobile devices
  • Email commands to send requests to account
  • Forecasting to project net worth
  • Shared expenses with other Buxfer users
  • Send payments online
  • International access with worldwide banks
You can also jump into creating a budget immediately if you already have a feel for what you're spending. You can create your own custom "tags" (Buxfer calls their categories "tags," but that terminology incorrectly implies that you can apply multiple tags to any expense. Rather, Buxfer only allows one tag per budget item so the tags actually function more like "categories.") Tags can add a bit of fun to your budget because you can be creative, e.g., categories like "food-n-drinks" or "mom-is-awesome." You can choose any one of a wide variety of currencies in which to display your account balances - including Bitcoin. Buxfer also offers forecasting capabilities, to predict your net worth based on your spending patterns. Buxfer is available worldwide. It works with any bank internationally, and supports over 130 currencies and 60 languages. Although Buxfer doesn't have dedicated mobile apps, they do provide mobile-optimized versions of the site:
  • iPhone/Android
  • Blackberry & Others
Buxfer even offers the capability of sending requests to your accounts via a set of email commands. You can add an expense, split expenses with friends, or check your balance even if you only have an email connection. One of Buxfer's most unique features is the ability to share expenses with other Buxfer users. This would come in handy for roommates, party planning, or any other situation where multiple people need to be accountable for payments. You can also send payments online to settle your debts with friends.

The Bad

  • No help pages or tutorials
  • Limited free plan
  • No mobile app
Buxfer falters a bit in the details. Starting up your budget can be intimidating if you've never done it before and there are no tutorials or help pages to guide you. You're really on your own - from coming up with expense and income categories to estimating the amounts you need. Compounding this problem (and others) is that you cannot search the Help Center: you must rely on their FAQ categories to find what you're looking for. Although most Free Plan users won't bump up against the limit of 5 budgets, they probably will experience the frustration of only being able to add 5 accounts or 5 bill reminders since many people would require a higher limit on these items. Buxfer has no dedicated apps customized by platform and some people might feel more comfortable with apps from a security standpoint than they do about mobile websites.

The Bottom Line

Buxfer's free budgeting website that is good for people who have a general idea of what their budgets should look like. It can also help people split bills among themselves if they are all Buxfer users. If you're interested in more complex analyses, bill pay, or more than 5 accounts then Buxter's Plus Plan or Pro Plan might work better for you. Those that use Buxfer can expect the following from the service:
  1. Free trial available
  2. Forecast tools
  3. No mobile app

Great Functionality, Terrible Customer Support (+) Unlike Wallet, YNAB, Spendee, Mint, Toshl, Moneydance, or Quicken - Buxfer actually (1) syncs to pretty much any foreign bank and (2) can use multiple currencies. Works great with my US and foreign accounts. Also, it is very functional/customizable (also unlike most other apps): you can choose how you want to budget (monthly rollover option), customize both main categories and sub-categories, create rules, etc. (-) When there are bugs/issues (and there are), you have a 0% chance of being responded to/helped. I have sent multiple requests, but all I ever get is their "we will respond in the next 24 hours" automated message.

I have accounts in two countries and it was the only finance program I could find that's able to sync bank accounts in both. It's easy to use and syncs behind the scenes so when I open it, my accounts are already synced. My only complaint is sometimes when I input a transaction in one account that needs to be debited from an account in a different currency and I do the exchange the wrong way, it's hard to fix as it seems I also confuse Buxfer and I need to delete the transaction and start over. Other than that, I recommend it highly. It has saved me hours of time as I no longer need to download transactions and input them manually.

I've been using Buxfer since 2017 and it is an essential tool for managing my personal finances. It has helped me get out of debt, allows me to effectively track and manage my cashflow and supports strategic financial decision making including paying college fees for my children, working out pension contributions and house purchases. The bank and credit card account integration works very well although I have had some issues with Buxfer incorrectly identifying credits as debits and vis versa. This is a bit annoying but manual updates are to do. I would also like to see support for other account types - UK pension and national savings (premium bond) accounts. I have tried other personal finance software but nothing comes close to Buxfer. Thoroughly recommended.

I have been a Buxfer client for 4 years. I had used Quicken for many years but when I switched to Chromebook I struggled to find a replacement that had similar features. There are many personal finance applications in the marketplace and I would argue many have some pretty cool features. But, many of these applications are limited in how they let a user handle their accounts and manage their finances. And, if one’s personal finances don’t fit perfectly or neatly into how that specific app wants one to manage their finances it becomes arduous and completely useless. I tried at least a half dozen apps. All were difficult to set up and use. None of them let me manage my finances the way I want. However, with Buxfer one gets the flexibility and freedom to set up accounts, tags, splits, reports and other useful tools in a way that best serves the user and their experience rather than in a way that serves the app’s. The set up process is simple and straightforward. The ability to customize the experience is hugely beneficial. The interface is clean, easy to use and easy to get the information I need to make better financial decisions. And, its team is responsive to feature requests when one finds something that could improve the product. Buxfer is not perfect. Reconciliation is difficult and there are times where they are syncing issues that I notice (usually at reconciliation) which frustrate me. As well there times where transactions cross accounts (sometimes as transfers) where reconciling the transaction in one account reconciles it in the other and this can cause reconciliation issues as well. Certainly, other apps out there serve their purposes. But, if you are looking for a personal finance application attuned to the way you manage your finances, as unique as you, rather than the way the product wants you to manage them, then Buxfer may be your solution.

I found Buxfer after searching for a replacement for my last financial program - Ace Money. That was good but it was tethered to my PC so I couldn't use it when away from home. I researched online solutions, trialed a stack of them and ended up with Buxfer which enables me to record and keep track of my financials anywhere I go. it is not as fully customisable as I would like, but nearly so. It's easy to use. Support is prompt and helpful and it has made my life easier. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a way to keep track of your money while on the go.

Excellent expense tracker, expense review tool and personal financial software. I have not found any other personal finance software that works for expats in GCC region. Buxfer was my solution and which I found accidently. Buxfer helps you track your expenses, see where your money is been spent in retrospective and makes changes, if needed to your expense pattern and categories. I have not used other features and so cannot comment on it.

Having all my accounts (almost) under one roof makes accounting much easier. Buffer keeps track of spending and via the tabs allows a type of envelope system. I can see at a glance through Budgets whether I am overspending in a category. A couple's of my accounts are however not supported. Buxfer used to be slow in sorting glitches but is now much quicker. The Help pages could still be more detailed. Just about to move my main account and I'll find out how easy that is!

I used to get really stressed keeping our finances up to date, manually entering all our data for our accounts including our credit cards. Buxfer does all that so I just have to 'allow' it to sync with our accounts every 3 months. Fabulous.

Buxfer has made organising our personal finances so much easier. With multiple accounts (buckets) it’s so hard to keep track and we’ve been able to set each up in the app. It also makes budgeting for once a year large bills so much easier.

Buxfer enables detailed tracking of our household spend. Tagging is particularly powerful. Tracking of investments is US focused but that's not a deal breaker.
