iSmart Alarm is a leader in DIY installed home security systems. The company's packages allow for nearly everyone to find something that fits their needs and budget. The system is fully expandable, so users can purchase a smaller package and add to it as their needs change. The company has several how-to videos on its YouTube channel to help its users with basic installation of its components. Customers using iSmart Alarm do not pay monthly monitoring fees and they own their system outright.

The Good

  • Ease of Installation
  • Self-Installed and Monitored
  • No Contracts
  • No Monthly Fees
  • Expandable System

iSmart Alarm is easy to install and since it is self-monitored, does not include monthly monitoring fees or cumbersome contracts. The system is fully wireless and portable and can be used by homeowners and renters alike. Users can purchase components individually or in packages from iSmart Alarm's web store or from one of its authorized resellers, including Amazon, Walmart (online only), Home Depot (online only), or Best Buy, among other leading retailers. When the system detects activity, the user is notified via the company's mobile app, which is available for iOS and Android devices. Users are able to respond to the detected event and take appropriate measures to dismiss the system's warning or summon emergency assistance. Users are able to easily expand their system as their needs change. In addition to basic home security options, the company offers video cameras, some with the capability to store recordings in the cloud or on an optional SD Card.

The Bad

  • No Professional Monitoring
  • No Fire/Smoke Alarm Integration
  • No Mobile App for Windows Devices
  • Limited Home Automation Options

While many appreciate the lack of monthly monitoring fees, there are many that the more traditional plan is simply a better option. Those who add a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) to their security system need to have monitored service rather than one that is self-monitored. Others prefer the added peace of mind that comes with knowing that another set of eyes is helping to protect one's home, family, and belongings. Most systems have some sort of integration with the home's smoke/fire detector. iSmart Alarm does not include this functionality in any way. Customers cannot integrate monitoring of their smoke alarm and be notified if it detects smoke while they are away from home. Most of the top performers include a mobile app for Windows so that those with a Windows mobile device are able to have access to the same features. iSmart Alarm does not have this functionality at the writing of this review in November, 2016. The company offers its customers rather limited options for home automation compared to many others in the industry. This is a drawback for those who want to have their home security and home automation controlled seamlessly.

The Bottom Line

  • Great Choice for Those Comfortable With DIY Installation and Monitoring
  • Suitable for Renters

iSmart Alarm is a great choice for many. Those who are uncomfortable with the idea of self-installation of components are probably not a good fit, even though installation and monitoring is fairly simple. The company's primary targeted demographic is those who want more home security than they currently have, want to avoid monthly monitoring fees, and are somewhat comfortable with technical components. The system is especially good for renters, since the installed features are easily moved.
