The Good

  • Electricity Products
  • Natural Gas Services
  • Renewable Energy
  • Variable Rates

Electricity Products

There are a number of electricity products available through Xcel Energy. The company offers power generation, which is a diverse mix of energy sources and is how the electricity Xcel provides is actually made. Xcel Energy also has its own power plants and distribution outlets. This takes the electricity it generates and supplies it to your home. The company also provides nuclear energy which is clean, safe, reliable, and carbon-free. Its transmission system allows for power to spread across long distances.

Natural Gas Services

Currently, there are a number of natural gas projects funded by Xcel Energy. Its sewer and septic line investigation project keeps gas lines safe by ensuring it is clear from sewer and septic lines. Xcel Energy can help users make the switch over to natural gas as well. Its natural gas energy is completely clean-burning and abundant natural gas.

Renewable Energy

With Xcel Energy, customers may be able to take advantage of the four types of renewable energy available. The company's renewable energy sources ensure the delivery of clean energy in an economical way. Renewable energy allows for cleaner energy option and more control over energy use. The available forms of renewable energy include the following:

  • Wind: a national leader in wind energy for over a decade
  • Solar: harnesses the power of the sun and converts it into energy
  • Hydro: using one of the oldest forms of energy to maintain a clean energy source
  • Biomass: actually turns waste into energy

Xcel Energy is also engaged in a renewable development fund. This fund promotes the creation, expansion, and attraction of renewable energy projects.

Variable Rates

While the fixed rates for Xcel Energy services are unknown, there is information on the variable rates. The electricity variable rates are 7¢/kWh while the natural gas variable rates start at 2.3¢/kWh. These rates are extremely competitive with even the largest providers in the country.

The Bad

  • Lack of Availability
  • Required Contracts

Availability

A drawback to the Xcel platform is the fact that it does not operate on a national level, limiting customers' access to its products. As of now, Xcel Energy only operates in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. If you do not live in one of these states, you will not be able to use the Xcel Energy service.

Contracts

While it is not unusual for an energy provider to require a contract upon signing up with its service, there are still providers out there that offer month-to-month solutions. However, Xcel Energy is not one of these providers. Xcel Energy requires a minimum of 12-month contracts and there are no contracts available for longer than 12 months. This means that Xcel Energy customers can only obtain a year-long contract upon renewal as well.

The Bottom Line

Xcel Energy provides a number of energy products for its customers to take advantage of. For residents of the states where Xcel Energy operates, looking into its energy solutions and services could be beneficial. Only variable rates are known, but if the monthly costs work out in your favor, then Xcel Energy may be a viable option.

Just had a call with an xcel customer service rep name "marjorie" (time: approximately 3:00-3:10p MST 5/29/18) who was extremely rude and condescending and treated me as if I was a child. I voiced concerns about a confusing charge on my account only to have her treat me very disrespectfully and acted like I was an idiot for her not being able to understand the question I was asking which was very simple. I figured a company with a well known name like that of Xcel Energy that I would have better treatment and professionalism from the customer service department who is essentially the only personal contact customers have with Xcel Energy. I did not appreciate how rude the representative was and I am seriously considering filing a written complaint to the BBB to address this concern. I hope the next time I have a simple question that the representative does not understand I will be treated with respect rather than as if the representative was having a bad day and hates their job.

I’ve been a excel customer since 1980 I have several properties with there service. One resident is 20 acre place with 3 houses 2 which are cve. The other is xcel . Being bordered by xcel and cve . Xcel WONT let cve set a pole on my property because it’s to close to xcel. Then they tell me I have to be put on a waiting list to get my kids in there home. Cve would have us hooked up in a couple days not months. So xcel energy is putting my daughter and 5 year old grandson out in the cold while they dicide what there going to do. No way to treat people and children. I contacted Valarie in Minnesota not nm she was NO help just made things worst. If you have a choice DO NOT pick xcel energy.!!!! CVE is a coop and they help there customers.

Our electricity had been cut off due to our mailman 'mixing' up our mail. He was new. I got off work at 3:30 pm and went at 5 pm to pay the full amount after talking to representative. When I called to give my receipt information they told me I did not pay the right amount due to need I g to pay a reconnection fee. I told them I had just got off the phone with another representative and was not tols of this fee. I had just paid $400 on the bill and asked if I could be billed it and was told no. So I go to pay this 'fee' and saw a bicket truck in my alley. I stop to inform them of what I was doing and he reassured he would be back by shortly once he received our entry from the call center on it being cleared to reconnect. I payed the fee and calles to give the referwnce numver and was told the order was in. It was now around 6:30 pm. I waited all night with my family such consists of 4 children ages 5,3,2,1 and the electricity was not turned back on. The house was frigid cold and so we just bundled up the babies and slept it off in hope it would be on by morning. We were wrong again. Mind you, when I saw the bucket truck he stated he got a call of a downed wire and told me he was not too busy that night. Yet did not make it back to reconnect our power. Now the next day has xome and it ia 5:12 pm, I have been at work all day and came home to still NO power. How is it that they are not too busy yet a qhole day has gone and still no power!? My money has to paid RIGHT AWAY in order to reconnect and the money is what the company got yet NO rush at all has been seen in order dor my power to be reconnected. I have been disappointed many times with Xcel and wish we had another provider due to their poor services!

Customer service is a joke can't even give you a timeframe of when your power will be turned on best they can give is within the next 24 hours they don't even have anyone on call after 3:30 to turn your power on due to a disconnection kind of sad a multimillion-dollar company ends their business day at 3:30 when you can call a plumber in the middle of the night and they will come and fix your problem the people answering the phone act like they are God and don't give a crap about their customers

Great company that exceeded my expectations for service. Rates have been better than I would have expected.
