Aetna vs Cigna

McCall Martin | Senior Editor

Cigna and Aetna are very similar in their plan offerings for individuals, families, and employer groups. Both are also trusted insurers. The biggest differences on dental insurance are the variety of plans offered. Cigna stands out for its Cigna Dental Health Connect™ program that helps you be proactive with your dental health.

Cigna and Aetna's group dental plan offerings are very similar. If you're an employer, it will largely come down to price and availability for your area and group size.

I have had Aetna dental health insurance for over three years now. They offer a great variety of different plans when it comes to dental coverage and price. I will continue to be a loyal Aetna member in the future because of how good their coverage extends and how many offices actually take them as insurance. It is truly the best dental health insurance.

Aetna Dental, even with an upgrade, is little better than having no insurance at all which is what I had to do for a while before I found Delta Dental. No reputable dentist within an hours drive will accept basic AETNA dental. They will tell you to put your money in the bank for when you need service. They will cover next to nothing besides cleaning, minor fillings, and extractions if you can find a dentist to accept it.

Cigna has offered cost effective and competitive rates for dental procedures. I always love seeing how much Cigna takes off from the original bill as it reminds me of the viable option I have for insurance.

Company does not cover what they claim to cover when they sell you the policy. I specifically asked about missing tooth replacement since I was in the middle of an implant when I signed up. I was told that as long as there was no lapse in coverage the procedure would be covered. Turned out to be a complete lie. My claim was rejected since it was done less than a year after joining, even though I had specifically asked if I would be covered, and was told by the agent, that the waiting period would be waived since there was no coverage lapse.

The Final Word

Cigna offers three different dental insurance plans with different amounts of covered services. These options make it easy to choose a coverage level that meets your needs and fits your budget. Cigna also offers Cigna Dental Health Connect™, which helps members stay on top of their dental health with personalized support and insights.

In contrast, Aetna only offers one dental insurance plan, so you don't have the same selection. Aetna also offers a dental discount card called Aetna ® Vital Savings Card. Members on this card pay a small monthly fee to access discounts on dental services. This plan can work well if you don't need a lot of dental services.

Cigna and Aetna's group plan offerings are very similar. You can buy indemnity plans or network-based plans with just in-network or both in- and out-of-network coverage. Further inquiry into both companies is worthwhile because you'll be able to compare prices.

Cigna gets our recommendation for individual and family plans. Get more details from both companies on group dental plans to compare rates and coverage.
