Toco Warranty's award-winning protection offers customers relief from vehicle breakdowns that are oftentimes unexpected, frustrating, and expensive.

Toco provides roadside assistance, car rental, a full concierge service, and can be used nationwide at any ASE-certified mechanic. Instead of charging customers upfront for years of coverage or requiring a hefty down payment, Toco allows clients to pay their coverage monthly instead.

Toco administers claims in-house, offering complete control over the customer experience. While many providers are third-party retailers, Toco is the seller, administrator, and obligor of the contracts they sell.  Toco contracts are insured by AmTrust Financial Services.

Toco's Extended Warranty Coverage is available in 46 of the 50 United States. However, if you're a California resident, be sure you're reading about Toco's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance and not the extended warranty coverage.

A warranty from Toco costs $80 to $85 per month, depending on the VIN and mileage on the car.

4 Coverage Levels

Toco offers one contract with four levels of coverage. The number of miles on the vehicle's odometer at the time a claim is submitted determines the level of coverage.

Toco's Orange level offers the most comprehensive coverage — extremely similar to the manufacturer's original warranty. In fact, when it comes to this plan, it's easier to look at what isn't covered rather than what is (this is similar to bumper-to-bumper coverage). This plan is for claims submitted under 100,000 miles on the odometer.

Toco's Yellow level offers fairly extensive coverage, it covers all the basics,  including high-tech electrical, modern features, brakes, and more.  This plan is for claims submitted between 100,001 and 150,000 miles on the odometer.

The Blue level provides coverage for your powertrain, plus some of the most important basics that keep your cooling, A/C, and electrical systems working.  The Blue level is for claims submitted between 150,001 and 200,000 miles on the odometer.

The Green level covers the most basic components that keep your car running (this coverage is similar to what other companies may refer to as a powertrain warranty). This level is for claims submitted between 200,001 and 250,000 miles on the odometer.

If you're interested in learning more about each of these plans' exact details, we recommend checking out Toco's sample contracts. The sample contracts are a great way to find out all the nitty-gritty details regarding coverage, filing a claim, cancellation costs, etc.

Honk

Toco uses the company Honk to provide roadside assistance.

Honk is an on-demand roadside assistance platform that allows you to find (and order) roadside assistance from your phone. Honk is available 24/7, nationwide, and you only pay for the services you use. The Honk app connects you with roadside assistance partners who can help if you've been locked out of your car, need a jumpstart, have a flat tire, are out of fuel, or need a tow.

Warranty Benefits

Alongside its fairly extensive coverage, all of Toco's extended car warranties come with the following benefits:

  • Roadside assistance — Jump-starts, flat tire changes, fuel delivery, locksmith, and towing services
  • Rental car benefits — Includes $35 per every four hours of labor performed on your vehicle with a maximum benefit of $175 per repair visit
  • Trip interruption coverage — Meal and lodging reimbursement up to $100 per day for 3 days when you experience a covered breakdown more than 100 miles from home
  • Hotel and motel discounts — Discounts on any stay booked through Hotels.com and a 5% rebate when you send your receipt to Toco

Waiting Period

To ensure your car is in working order, Toco has a mandatory waiting period before your coverage takes effect. Generally, the waiting period is 90 days and 1,000 miles (from the date of purchase). The waiting period may depend on your driving habits. A waiting period of 30 days and 1,000 miles is standard.  That said, Toco explains that its 90-day waiting period is to help prevent fraudulent claims and keep its rates low.

Toco offers some customers the ability to submit claims immediately with a Certificate of Appreciation, which allows the customer to submit claims during the waiting period but limits the amount that can be paid towards claims. After the waiting period, the Toco Plan covers up to the value of a vehicle at the time of a claim and $15,000 over the life of the agreement.

Licensed Repair Facilities

Toco coverage can be used at any state-licensed repair facility or mechanic. However, if you choose a preferred repair facility (one that's been selected and assigned by the administrator of Toco's plans), your deductible may be waived or reduced. Just keep in mind that preferred repair facilities aren't available in all areas.

Customer Satisfaction

Toco recently won several 2021 awards given by Stevie Awards for its Customer Service Training or Coaching Program and Customer Care Department. Many of the reviews left on BestCompany.com reveal that Toco customers are happy with this warranty provider and the level of coverage it provides. However, there are even more reviews praising Toco's customer support representatives. Specifically, customers have mentioned that they felt the support team was knowledgeable, polite, and quick with service. Others mentioned that the company representatives were happy to go through each protection plan and mention all of the benefits, possible discounts, and more.

We've seen too many car warranty providers drop the ball on customer service and it's nice to see a company honor its commitment to customer satisfaction.

The Bad

  • State Coverage
  • Cancellation Costs
  • Late Payment Fee

State Coverage

Currently, Toco Warranty does not offer its car warranty services to those living in Alaska, Missouri, California, or Washington. However, enrolled customers have breakdown protection in all 50 states and Canada.

Cancellation Costs

Toco does allow customers to cancel their warranty plan. Just be sure to read your contract carefully to make sure you understand all the terms and conditions. Toco's Sample Contracts for the Orange, Blue, and Yellow plans state the following:

"If this contract is canceled within the first sixty (60) days and no claims have been filed, we will refund the entire contract charge paid.

If this Contract is canceled after the first sixty (60) days or a claim has been filed, we will refund an amount of the contract charge according to the pro-rata method reflecting the greater of the days in force or the miles driven based on the term/miles selected and the date coverage begins, less a fifty dollar ($50.00) administrative fee. Where permitted, the total amount of all authorized claims will be deducted from all refunds."

Late Payment Fee

Toco charges a $5 late payment fee for any account that is past due over five days. This fee may be waived at Toco’s discretion.

Be aware that your Toco contract may be canceled if you are over fifteen days past due (without communication). If your contract is canceled for non-payment, you can re-enroll but may have to restart the waiting period.

The Bottom Line

As far as extended car warranty providers, Toco is a reliable option for car owners. The company's coverage and benefits (such as roadside assistance, rental car benefits, discounts, and more) offer comparable or better coverage than their competitors. Additionally, Toco’s commitment to customer experience and satisfaction exceeds that of third-party sellers and elevates Toco above most others in the space

The cost of the Toco Plan depends on your car's make, model, mileage, and how often you drive. It's extremely easy to get a quote online and purchase a plan directly from the site. Toco also offers free agent consultation to answer any questions and make sure that customers fully understand the service and experience.

One thing that sets Toco apart from other companies is that they offer month-to-month payments so you can pay as you go and cancel if you no longer need it. Instead of spending money upfront on several years of coverage or making a large down payment, you can choose to make smaller monthly payments.

There's no after-hours/weekend number for a customer or a repair shop to file a claim on the weekends after the Toco office is closed. The customer has to wait until Monday, email a copy of the repair bill to Toco, wait for approval of the repairs. Then the Toco customer has to wait to be reimbursed. All of this takes 2-3 weeks for reimbursement (a check) in the mail. Also, there's nothing in the Toco contract that "shop fees" aren't covered, which is deceiving. There needs to be a phone for repair shops to contact TOCO for authorization of repairs on weekends and after hours. Also, the mile coverage for towing to be extended beyond 15 miles. Sometimes a person may live in a rural area and there aren't any repair shops within 15 miles.

I HAVE BEEN A CUSTOMER FOR OVER 3 YEARS, WHEN IT WAS TIME TO USE MY WARRANTY I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. MY VEHICLE REQUIRED 6 FUEL INJECTORS, MY WARANTY COVERED DIFFERENT FUEL PROBLEMS EXCEPT THE INJECTORS WHICH WAS VERY EXPENSIVE WORK NOT TO MENTION THE LABOR, YOU WOULD THINK FUEL INJECTORS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER FUEL PROBLEMS. WHEN I NEEDED MY WARRANTY THE MOST FOR THE FIRST TIME IT WAS ALL FOR NOTHING. I BEGAN THINKING MAYBE TOCO KNEW THAT FUEL INJECTORS WERE A PROBLEM WITH MY TYPE OF VEHICLE AND THEY KNOW WHAT PARTS TO COVER AND NOT TO COVER WHEN ISSUING THESE CONTRACTS. I KNOW FOR SURE IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN THEY WILL DEFINITELY LOOSE THIS TRYING TO BE A LOYAL CUSTOMER DEAL. I TRULY HOPE IN THE FUTURE TOCO WILL COME THRU FOR ME WHEN I'M IN NEED AGAIN, I CURRENTLY HAVE 2 VEHICLES UNDER CONTRACT, I JUST WANT MY MONEY'S WORTH I HAVE INVESTED IN THESE CONTRACTS OVER THE YEARS.

We are sorry that the experience was not what you had hoped. Unfortunately, items that are not listed in the contract are not covered. We hope that you were able to find a solution and we wish you the best.

Hi Tharessa, the Orange contract that you have is the highest level of care on the market; we are surprised to hear this news and will have a supervisor reach out.
