Home Depot was started in 1978 by avid DIYers Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank after they were fired from Handy Dan Home Improvement. They dreamed of a hardware warehouse store that would offer a huge array of merchandise at reasonable prices with highly trained staff to guide customers at every skill level through any home project.

With help from a few others, Marcus and Blank opened the first store in 1979, and the business plan paid off. By 1981, it went public and as of 2021, it employs about 500,000 employees and has 2,200 stores in three countries.

Home Depot offers walk-in tub installation. Installing an accessible tub or converting a tub to be safer may reduce the risk of injury and is a great idea for those who are aging or have disabilities.

The Good

  • Cost Guide
  • Affordable Financing
  • Licensed Installers
  • Customizable Options

Cost Guide

Home Depot’s website includes important information about its walk-in tub installation service, including a cost guide. This a great resource for those thinking about getting a walk-in tub with any contractor. It explains the average cost of an installation is about $10,000. The guide also lists factors that will increase the price of a project of this size. Customers can reference the FAQ section which can answer many questions before having a contractor out to bid the project.

Affordable Financing

Customers can choose between two common forms of financing: the consumer credit card or the Home Depot Project Loan. Credit worthiness will determine the options for financing.

The company’s financing options can only be used at Home Depot. Its credit card may be a good fit for you if you have the self-discipline and are certain you can pay off the balance before the introductory time period is over. The credit card does not offer any rewards and customers may find a traditional consumer card with better terms and perks.

Consumers financing larger projects may look to use the Home Depot Project Loan but again may find better terms through a personal loan or home equity line of credit. Tub installations come with a high price tag and having options for payment is appreciated by consumers who need to structure payments.

Licensed Installers

Home Depot hires local, licensed, and insured walk-in tub installers and contractors. The company does background checks on any worker that comes into customers' homes to ensure it is sending out good people to interact with and be in customers most private spaces.

Customizable Options

Home Depot is able to offer complete customization for walk-in tubs to fit customers' needs. Options of door placement, seats, ledges, grab bars, jets, tub composite, door visibility, etc. are all available through custom order.

The Bad

  • Uses Subcontractors
  • Limited Availability for Consultations

Uses Subcontractors

Because Home Depot contracts with local installers, there is bound to be potential for communication errors. With the use of subcontractors, often the person quoting the project, measuring, or installing are not the same person. If the job is not completed to the customer's satisfaction, it may be difficult to pinpoint where the mistake was made along the project timeline and who is responsible.

While Home Depot makes efforts to use only professional, licensed contractors, customers should be aware of potential issues this could create and factor that into their final decision.

Limited Availability for Consultations

Currently this service is not offering free in-home consultationsat all locations. Customers will have to use the company's website and type in their area code to see if an in-home consult is offered in their area.

The Bottom Line

If you value a big company name that has the ability to finance a large home improvement project like a walk-in tub installation, Home Depot may be a good choice for you. It is a reputable company that offers many options for every taste. Depending on your circumstances and preferences, Home Depot may be a good choice for your tub installation needs.
