Tax season can be a stressful time for anyone who finds themselves filing a return. efile.com is made up of a group of tax professionals and software vendors that provide online tax filing software for individuals to file their state and federal returns for the tax year.  The website makes tax preparation easy for state and federal income taxes and offers tax professional help. There are several different tax deduction tools that result in savings for taxpayers online. The e-file software will select the correct, legally required, least expensive tax form based on the user's tax information. Customers using a 1040EZ form may use the free e-file option.

The Good

  • Free filing option
  • Online tools
  • Accuracy guarantee
  • Tax fraud prevention
  • Supported tax forms

efile.com has several resources listed on the website, in terms of live chat extensive blogs and news articles that offer factual information about filing your taxes. One of the biggest pieces of information on the website was about tax breaks that potentially would have expired during 2014. This was helpful for those who were waiting on this news to start filing their tax returns for the 2014 year.

Free Filing Option

There are several good things about using efile.com. One is the basic filing service offered. Other companies do not offer a free filing option. The free e-filing option makes it easy for customers who just have an easy tax situation to file for.

Online Tools

Another useful tool on the website is the filing calculator. Before filing your taxes, it is possible to figure out your tax situation without setting up your account. It is possible to select several different filing situations, calculate your deductions, and view your tax bracket BEFORE you sign up and complete an account. The calculator is a tool that's not always accessible on other websites without setting up an account. Another thing good thing about efile.com is the state tax information available. Customers can find information about state tax rates, tax return statuses, and other useful information about when a tax return would be completed.

Accuracy Guarantee

efile.com guarantees the maximum tax return allowed by law. Even though the company does provide a refund if customers find a higher refund elsewhere, the guarantee has a lot of stipulations. People must provide paperwork of the other company's bigger return within 60 days for it then to be evaluated by efile.com. If efile.com deems it credible, they will provide a refund as well as a $100 pledge fee. The company's guarantee is thorough and promises 100% accuracy. If the company should make a mistake with the IRS, they will pay the audit penalty and interest fees.

Tax Fraud Prevention

efile.com has the following security features to prevent tax fraud:

  • IRS Authorized
  • TrustGuard
  • Promise of taxes being verified and secure

Supported Tax Forms

  • Free Basic
    • Form 1040EZ
  • Deluxe
    • Free Basic Forms
    • Form 1040A
    • Retirement Income
    • Mortgage
  • Premium
    • Deluxe Forms
    • 1040
    • All forms and Schedules

The Bad

  • Lacking in customer support options
  • No military discount
  • Federal and state prices
  • Audit support

Lacking in Customer Support Options

While the live chat support for efile.com is great, the efile.com corporate location does not provide phone support for its customers. efile.com should provide phone support for customers who might make a mistake on their tax return or are not sure what product is best for them. Not only do they lack phone support, but they do not have any visible forms of social media where customers can turn to for additional customer support. With tax preparation, customers should have several different outlets to have their questions answered. efile.com seriously lacks in this area.

No Military Discount

Another issue with efile.com is the lack of a military discount for those who serve. Other websites offer a military discount of up to 20% for using a filing service. While there is information on efile.com for those who serve in the military, there is no information about discounts for using the website.

Federal and State Prices

One of the problems that customers have is with the prices for their deluxe and premium prices. These service packages are not as robust as premium and deluxe options with other companies. Other companies have premium options that are priced significantly higher, but makes it easy to do your taxes if you are in a high income or farm tax situation. You can file your federal income tax with efile.com online for the following prices

  • FREE - Basic (no children, single, no mortgage)
  • $29.95 - Deluxe (children, mortgage, retirement income, 1040A form)
  • $39.95 - Premium (self-employed, itemized deductions, all forms & schedules, 1040 form)

The price for filing state taxes is undisclosed whether it is for the free edition or the popular edition. Although a free option is always a plus, efile.com doesn't have the most competitive prices in the industry. There are several other options that can beat efile.com's pricing.

Audit Support

efile.com does not disclose any information on audit support. This includes offering support when a customer is audited by the IRS as well as providing any information as to why a customer is audited by the IRS. This results in no points for this criteria.

gavel

The Bottom Line

We recommend efile.com for individuals who want to file in an easy employment situation, family taxes, and self-employed individuals. Here is what we like about efile.com:

  • The free e-filing option for using the 1040 EZ form.
  • The free options for federal taxes
  • Robust live chat support
  • A free calculator to start your tax return, without setting up an account or paying the service fee.

Here is what we think can be improved with efile.com:

  • There is no phone, email or social media support. Customers could have avoided difficulty if efile.com provided more customer support options.
  • Tax solutions for farm income are lacking with efile.com. Other companies have options available in their premium and deluxe products for customers who have farm income.
  • If they offer military discounts, they should make the information present on their website.
  • efile.com should offer audit support in order to be more competitive with other companies.

I only work one job and have no other income so this works really well for me! I find it very easy to understand and I think it guides you through each step with ease. I did have to pay for my state return but it takes it right out of my refund which is direct deposit so no credit card needed. There are free options but sometimes the $20 is worth it. Simple for easy tax payers. I have filed with them a few years and have never had an issue. I had to do one amendment but that was my fault and I felt it was easy enough.

I filed a 1040 return on 1/17/17. My $4885 refund was deposited 1/28/17. I had no problems. I recommend you do a dummy paper return and get the correct AGI for last year. The pricing was affordable and they delivered what was advertised. You can't ask them to prepare your return. They only provide the software. The negative reviews I read were primarily from people who don't understand how E-File works. Their security is superb. I will use them next year.

This company is horrible. They were confusing! and I'm good with taxes. I just didn't want to pay. I would have filled them out and mailed them in if I'd have seen these reviews. The IRS should be called out on having this on their site 😡 I did my daughters taxes. She is 20 yrs old, had 2 jobs and no kids. I got a letter saying that the returns were rejected because lasts years AGI was wrong. I went back and checked and everything was absolutely correct and now it is stuck. I'll be calling the IRS to find out what's going on but I guarantee it was something with the way these were filed

I would not recommend this site given my experience. My taxes could not be any simpler; one income, one standard deduction, no SSecurity contributions. I Thought it would be FREE and easy. I was wrong. It was not that easy and I ended up paying $90.00. If you want to include the State filing, you have to pay. The e-file suggested I could have more deductions but I had to pay for upgrade, I did, I did not have any more deductions at all. Once I thought I had completed the form I reviewed and realized I would not be getting Federal refund. I knew something was wrong. I did my taxes manually and I knew that through the year I had made more contributions that what I owed I knew I would get a refund. I contacted e-filing support. I was informed I had to amend my forms. I had to pay for the amendment. In all, I had my 1040 completed before I contacted e-file. I wanted to file via internet because supposedly was easy and fast. I could have mailed my 1040 forms to IRS and it would have been cheaper and faster. Now I have to mail the amendment to IRS. The support via email is good but in all was not FREE

E-file Offers 'free file' but charged 19.95 for the extension filing. Find the discount code and save some. (Only 1040EZ is free.) Easy to use but gives forced choices, lack of clarity, that may not be desirable. I did it several times and if I had not done that, would have erroneously gotten 600 less. I am verifying information elsewhere and it's under review. I had problem w EIC. They seemed to skip qualified persons if not used as dependent too. You don't have to immediately file .(the 'hidden' menu is a drop down - look there for navigation and copy of saved work) No doubt one has to pay a higher price for Delux or Premium tax software to access 1040 and schedules, trelated tables, credits, itemized deductions like mortgage interest EIC Child Tax Credit, self-employment or schedule C income, or anything useful.

Evidently adding a simple form bumps you up from "Free" to what they call Deluxe Membership. but they don't tell you this until you've spent hours entering sensitive, complex information. I went to review my return and "e-file.com" asked for payment first! I thought it was free, at least that's how I created my account. No, they wanted $25 plus, and I'm still not sure if there were additional charges to file, as I called them and no one answered! Deceptive Trade practice at it's best! . So I stopped everything and went to "freefilefillableforms.com" which actually is free and easy to use. It took less time with "freefilefillableforms.com" than it did to try and get E-file.com to delete my account, which they still haven't done! It seems the IRS recommends e-file.com? Unbelievable.

Got my grandson's taxes done and submitted on 2/12. Turns out he missed out on the EITC Credit in CA because they didn't catch it then. A few days later grandson mentioned the credit to me, so I looked they had two different numbers as to what he should have gotten back. I called and they said the first # was Correct. Turns out it wasn't and somewhere the software corrected it. Long story short I called tech support, they said I would have to file an amended return for $30.00. I told her I shouldn't have to pay as it was their fault. She basically called me a liar saying they wouldn't have changed the numbers and I sure as Hell didn't! I know they did it somehow. I went ahead and paid just to get it done correctly ahahah. I ended up having to go through the tax board to get forms as they didn't use the right ones to amend CA!!! I am so disgusted, will never ever use them again! Very unprofessional and money gouging company. A simple state and federal return and it cost over $60.00 in the end and I had to do the work myself! Stay away from this company!!!!

I thought I was going through IRA tax software. After I got through with all the information I was charged over $40.00 for an updated plan I did not want. I was told because of the forms I used the upgrade was the only option. I did get help with filling out my forms from a live person and she was helpful. I read the reviews after submitting my forms. I am now concerned that my forms will not be submitted as indicated and I will be liable for late fees and other problems. I also saw discounts I wish I had known about. I probably will not use this program next year.

I found the federal form super easy, but state really confusing, and don’t even know if it went through. I don’t know if I’ll have to file through mail anyway—and they will force you to buy the deluxe package after the free promises. Which is weird because the info for them seems official and was right on the W2. I probably won’t be using them next year.

E-File is absolutely THE. WORST. website to file your taxes if you want to do them and keep your money, i.e., low-income families who need to save every penny they can. The "free" version is only for if you have no children and no dependents. I suppose it would be wonderful if you are single, but then you are most likely able to afford to have someone do your taxes for you. Having a family is hard enough, however; compiling all of your income to file for the government when you have mouths other than your own means you need to save every penny you can. ESPECIALLY when you and your significant other are both in school, but you are the only one bringing in money aside from loans and grants... see where I am going with this? This site is for the birds. We wound up going with H&R Block's free version. I suggest the rest of you that are like us do the same. $25 is $25 you could use in food or other necessities. Save your money and go elsewhere.

I clicked on a link from the official IRS government site when I was looking up FREE tax return filing options. It directed me to e-file.com. Again they just claimed it was FREE - no questions asked - kinda is a red flag and I should have stopped right there. After filling it all out they presented me with a bill. Then they informed me that filing my state taxes would be an additional charge. At least they were straight about the state charge but they were definitely deceptive about the federal charge, banking on the premise that most people will continue because they are too lazy to go to a different site and start all over. Boy were they wrong in my case. I deleted all me information and went somewhere else with more transparency! This is somewhat criminal and I won't have it. Do yourself a favor and use a different service. It is not FREE.

I wish so much that I had read these reviews before I gave E-file.com my money. Thankfully, I found a 50% coupon so only paid them $10, but I did NOT get anything of value. I needed to file a form and it wasn't at all clear that they don't support that form. I tried to get an extension but they don't offer the right form and won't give my money back. I've sent about 5 emails to customer service and they're adamant that they're keeping my money. Their advice isn't good, either. One guy said I could just "manually delete" the personal information from the account after it was clear that they couldn't help me. It turns out that's impossible to do; they (at my request) disabled the account. I would never, ever give them a dime and am sorry that I did! There must be better companies out there!

I prepared and submitted both my federal and state taxes. The fed was rejected so i corrected it and i got accepted. The state got rejected bc it was pending when i corrected the fed. I corrected it and it got accepted. Initially i was doing direct deposit with ecollect however i wasnt able to resibmit the state without paying for the services up front. So i paid. My state taxes were sent to my acct and got rejected bc they said they had the wrong acct number. I contacted efile to verify what acct number they had bc of course i double checked before i submitted and they told me i didnt file with them. I asked them if i needed to show proof i filed directly with them bc i have my receipt and they sent the same general statement about me not filing with them.

This company does not follow their refund policy for charges they implode on the consumer. They are slow as Christmas with customer service and it has now been two weeks of trying to communicate with them about getting the charges returned to me according to their refund policy. They refuse and will word whatever way they can a response that will deny the person any justice to their refund policy for services. Not only that, they do not follow their own procedures which cause ethical violations. They are not allowed to research your personal identity or property to review what they screw up to claim they do not owe you a refund. I have had to contact my back to cover this problem and the ridiculous people that do not respond with customer service and when they do it is to tell the customer just how wrong the customer is...EFILE.COM should be taken off-line. They do not allow you to cancel services, they bill you before you ever get the free return offered, they do not deliver, customer service is awful, they do not follow their guarantee/warranty of services, they do not follow their refund policies, and they are good at getting tax returns for people much lower than they should be credited for..These people are not professionals or tax filers at all. DON'T USE THESE PEOPLE!

I have used them before with success and fast refund times. However, my state has changed it's online filing rules, and eFile can no longer eFile OH state returns. When offering "do you want to do your state return as well?" there is no indication that some states do not accept electronic filing. I paid the fee (like last year) but eFile said it could not be submitted. I requested a refund after doing it myself on the Ohio Department of Taxation website (free), and eFile refused to refund my $25 State tax eFile fee, citing some contractual small print (my bad). I feel like this is predatory, and uses trickery to get you to pay for them to prepare a return that cannot be submitted, and would be free to eFile in any case through the stat taxation website. I have learned my lesson, let other's learn from me.

Extremely simple 1040 that should have taken 15 minutes. Kept getting unexplained error messages, no way to fix because no indication of what the problem was. Finally made it through to getting federal and state filed, plugged in account information, got charged on credit card, and then got another error message and got booted off website. Customer service claims that even though nothing was filed, federal or state, and I was not even able to see the returns, I still have to pay anyway. No refund. Nothing accomplished. It was an $18,000 1099-Misc and they stole my money for it.

Attempted filing and a state return was generated for a state I wasn't filing for. I had no idea where this came from. I was to redirect around that error to then put in my card information to make my payment for filing and it stated my card was declined and to try again. I was charged twice when the site told me my card was declined. There is no number to reach to correct this. I've emailed or messaged plenty of times with no response. Very terrible company, don't use them, they don't provide help, they have no number to call. They SUCK and are not IRS they are a fraud service.

Efile would not refund my federal prep money after I did not file with them. Their set up is a lot more confusing than other platforms.
