VidAngel is a streaming and video-on-demand platform that allows users to filter objectionable content from movies and TV shows on their favorite streaming services, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Users can choose to remove or mute specific content such as violence, profanity, nudity, and more, according to their preferences.

Founded in 2013, VidAngel gained popularity for providing a way for families and individuals to enjoy mainstream entertainment while avoiding content they find offensive or inappropriate. The company believes you have the right to watch your digital movies and TV shows the way that you want, within your own home, as iterated in the VidAngel slogan, “Watch more stuff, without the bad stuff”.

The Good

  • Personalized Filtering Options
  • Compatible with Several Streaming Services
  • Discount on Annual Subscription
  • No Contract

Personalized Filtering Options

VidAngel provides users with a wide variety of content filtering options for their streamed movies and shows. You can filter entire categories, including sex/nudity/immodesty, violence, and language. More granular filtering is available, allowing you to target levels of graphic violence, as well as specific scenes and words. Filters can be edited at any time, allowing you to tailor content to your individual and/or family preferences.

Compatible with Several Streaming Services

VidAngel is primarily intended to be integrated with your streaming services of choice, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. The platform has filters available for upwards of 15,000 movies and TV shows across major streaming services, but filtering may not be available on all available content.

VidAngel can be connected to the following streaming services:

  • Apple TV+
  • Netflix (ad-free plans)
  • Amazon Prime Video
  • Peacock (Premium and Premium Plus)
  • Starz (through Amazon)
  • Paramount+ (Premium Plan through Amazon)
  • AMC+ (through Amazon)
  • BritBox (through Amazon)
  • PBS Masterpiece (through Amazon)

It’s important to note that VidAngel doesn’t doesn’t filter shows produced or distributed by Disney or Warner Bros. due to agreements with those studios. Thus, you won’t be able to connect VidAngel to Disney+ or Max (commonly known as HBO Max).

Discount on Annual Subscription

VidAngel offers monthly and annual subscription options. The monthly subscription is $9.99 per month, but you have the opportunity to save more on a VidAngel Annual subscription. Currently, the Annual plan is the discounted price of $99.99 per year (the equivalent of two free months when compared to the regular VidAngel monthly subscription). The Annual Subscription includes unlimited use of filters and access to content available from Angel Studios.

You can choose an Annual subscription when you sign-up for VidAngel or you can switch to it at a later time.

No Contract

VidAngel allows their users to cancel their service at any time. This provides users with freedom from a constricting contract and gives users the option to leave for any reason at any time.

The Bad

  • No Free Trial
  • Limited Streaming Library
  • Hollywood Studio Copyright Lawsuit

No Free Trial

VidAngel doesn’t offer a free trial period which you might typically see with other streaming platforms. While this may be off-putting to some users, it’s important to note that VidAngel does offer a 30-day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with the platform and its services.

Limited Streaming Library

VidAngel offers a small library of content included with your subscription, including access to available content from Angel Studios. However, if you'd like to filter a movie or show not already on VidAngel, you must connect another streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

Hollywood Studio Copyright Lawsuit

In December 2016, VidAngel entered a lengthy lawsuit with four major Hollywood studios — Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox, Disney, and Warner Bros. — in which VidAngel was accused of copyright infringement and violating the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). The lawsuit lasted for more than four years, during which time the company shut down entirely in 2016 and relaunched in 2017 without content from the suing studios. In 2020, a settlement was reached and in 2022 VidAngel launched a campaign to draw users back to the platform.

While the VidAngel lawsuit didn’t occur between the company and its users directly, the extent of the lawsuit, including a bankruptcy filing shortly after the 2017 relaunch, affected consumer trust in the platform. In recent years, the company has been working hard to bolster its public image and is hopeful that Disney (now including Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox) and Warner Bros. might have a change of heart, allowing VidAngel to provide users with an even wider range of content.

The Bottom Line

For those who want to “watch more stuff, without the bad stuff”, VidAngel provides a platform through which you can connect your streaming services and filter objectionable content, including sex/nudity, violence, and language. VidAngel filtering options are entirely customizable, allowing you to target levels of violence, as well as specific scenes and words.

VidAngel offers two subscription options: monthly and annual. The monthly VidAngel plan is $9.99 per month and the VidAngel Annual Subscription is $99.99 per year. The Annual plan may offer you more savings because the discounted price of $99.99 is the equivalent of two free months when compared to the regular VidAngel monthly subscription.

It’s worth noting that due to a lengthy lawsuit that began in 2016 (settlement was reached in 2020), VidAngel doesn’t filter shows produced or distributed by Disney or Warner Bros. due to agreements with those studios. Thus, while VidAngel supports connection with a variety of streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, you won’t be able to connect VidAngel to Disney+ or Max (commonly known as HBO Max).

This is a good service, allowing you to really easily filter movies according to your tastes & standards. Their 1300+ movies are actually recent and popular, and are the ones you actually WANT to watch...WAY WAY better than Netflix's, Vudu's, or Amazon Prime's selections. They're constantly improving -- like all the time. Their selection grows, the website improves (better than Netflix in many ways), they add tools, and make filtering more user-friendly. Ex: auto-sellback so you don't get charged more than 1 day, and filter rules that can apply to every movie you buy, so initiating a movie only takes mere seconds. However, their video and audio quality is really low. The HD quality SOMEtimes approaches 720p (I have Google Fiber, so no bandwidth issues on my end). Their audio quality is wacky -- the center channel (dialogue) is compressed but decent, but all other channels range from VERY compressed and low-volume to non-existent. It dramatically changes the experience for me, and I don't feel like I can immerse myself in a movie adventure. I'd pay more for a 1080p 5.1 experience. I mean, just 5.1 doesn't require much addition in streaming bandwidth. Their streaming costs must only be 15-25 cents of the $1/$2 cost, so adding a $3 HD+ option would be terrific. Maybe their current viewers don't mind the bad quality, but it's a significant difference from what you get by watching a physical Blu-ray. Also, their marketing's kinda strange. Their target audience is those who want to have cleaner movies/shows, but their marketing is edgy and somewhat provocative. It'd be nice if they could be more balanced. I think they're trying to appeal to a wider base, but their bread & butter is content filtering by users. They should be able to appeal to both groups. Maybe their marketing team is a little disconnected from what appeals to a wider base? Netflix, Vudu, et al are straightforward in their messaging. There's really no need to be edgy.

We've used VidAngel to watch movies we want to watch but we know have one or two inappropriate scenes or lots of swearing. You can go through and select exactly what you want taken out of the movie. You can select any sex scenes to be taken out and specific swear words or all swear words. They've gone out of business and have asked their customers in the past to donate money to keep them in business which I found very weird and tacky. It sort of left a bad taste in my mouth as far the overall company. I think the idea of being able to take out the bad parts of movies is amazing. I think VidAngel's execution on that idea has been subpar.

I wish I could give VidAngel 5 stars; we were super regular customers back before they had to stop streaming popular movies which you could filter yourself (cutting out language, etc.) by setting online parameters. At that time, I would have given them 10 stars -- we *loved* the service. After they got hit with copyright violations or some such thing, they had to stop offering that service (total bummer) and then offered a monthly subscription to movies and shows they have created. No thanks. I don't want another monthly bill -- I'd rather pay per movie I choose to watch (as it was before). Sorry, VidAngel. You lost us as customers.

I love the vid angel service. It was nice being able to watch movies with my family that are clean. However we had the swearing censored and there were multiple times with my family that it would swear and You may not hear the swear word but you definitely can see the actor mouthing it and still know why they say. Also sometimes the picture wasn’t great and the quality was bad.

I like the concept of VidAngel, but I don't feel like this company executes it very well. The movies are choppy and unpredictable and sometimes the quality isn't great. I also don't like how it has recently changed so that you have to pay a monthly fee for it instead of paying for individual movies. This company has the right idea, but it definitely needs some improvement.

Not as good as it used to be. Vidangel used to be an extremely useful service that allowed editing out innapropriate content from movies and tv. It is still a service that allows editing. But now the selection is much smaller and it costs more for it's own subscription plus a subscrption for the service that provides what movie you are editing. It's all very frustrating and in my opinion too much trouble for what it's worth.

I like the fact that I can edit movies that I wouldn't watch normally because of the rating and/or questionable material. I have had problems with the movie not playing properly or it being difficult if stream if I have asked for certain things to be taken out. Sometime a movie is difficult to understand if too much is taken out. Customer service was helpful and quick to respond when I couldn't get the app to work. At times it was more work to fix the problem so I just didn't use the app.

I used to love VidAngel! I used it a lot a few years ago before there was the whole legal fiasco. I love that it provided popular movies for us to watch but that we could edit out what we wanted. I loved that you could specify the kinds of things you wanted edited out as well. Genius!

Nice being able to watch shows edited with my family. However, the picture was also blurry or choppy, the sounds wasn’t the greatest, when it was edited you could either see the actual swear word from the mouth. Not hear it but see what they said, and or there would be whole scenes missing from the movie because it would edit so much out.

I have VidAngel a try and I was very disappointed. The streaming was terrible and it buffered frequently. I thought maybe it was my internet, but when we tried our other streaming service they worked just fine. It was also kind of clunky to use.

I was a HUGE fan on VidAngel before they had a lawsuit that forced them to change their business model completely. I value entertainment that is clean, no profanity, swearing, killing and sex. I am not happy that I can no longer watch new release movies on VidAngel. Although I realize it is not their fault.

I liked it better when we were able to pay per movie. I found it difficult to use when they changed format and don't watch through vid angel enough to justify paying a monthly service anymore. I love the idea and hope that it improves again.

I wanted to give VidAngel 5 starts. I used to love them so much more. Edited streaming for $1. With the litigation and the new service, VidAngel seems more limited in what it offers. Also, it seems like they are having trouble getting their act together. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE, THOUGH

We used VidAngel for a long time. We used it more so we could edit content for our kids. When they moved away for that for awhile, I don’t think they had a great service or a good value.

The concept for VidAngel was good but it didn't have a great selection of movies and shows to choose from. It also took too long to go through all of the filters to get everything set up.

Choppy picture and video. Sound wasn't every great and even though stuff was edited you could still see what they were saying or it would cut out a major scene of the movie.
