Vudu is an online movie and TV streaming service owned by Walmart and has been around for over ten years. Its main business stems from digital streaming, providing even more entertainment options to consumers. Vudu is compatible with a service called UltraViolet, a service for storing and accessing digital copies of DVDs. Vudu is an on-demand subscription-free video streaming service.

The Good

  • No Monthly Subscription
  • Free Content
  • Watch New Releases
  • Easily Save Your Movies Online
  • Watch From Anywhere

No Monthly Subscription

With Vudu, you only pay for what you watch. There are no subscriptions and no late fees. You can choose which movies to rent or buy and also have the option of buying TV series by the episode or by the season. This absence of a monthly subscription is attractive to those who only want to watch a few things and don't feel like they would get their money's worth out of a monthly subscription.

Free Content

Vudu offers a library of free content that you can watch without an account. Some titles stay free, and others are swapped each week. These TV shows and films are supported by short ads throughout. However, the quality is good and the ads are minimal. All paid streaming through Vudu is ad free.

Watch New Releases

Vudu claims movies will be available the same day they are released on DVD. This is a huge advantage over Netflix, at which you have to wait 28 days after a movie is released before it's available. Vudu boasts a large media library of over 15,000 movies and 2,000 TV series. Movies are available to rent in standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) options such as HDX and UHD. For some movie options, SD and HD are the same price, but for most the HD version is a dollar more.

Easily Save Your Movies Online

Vudu is now compliant with UltraViolet, meaning any DVDs or Blu-ray discs cleared by studios for digital distribution can be uploaded to the cloud and watched through Vudu. This makes a digital copy of your movie that you can watch from anywhere and keep for forever. This service gives you an easy way to keep your collection of movies digitally without taking up storage space on your computer and without the fear that your DVDs or Blu-rays will get scratched or broken. When you buy a movie through Vudu, it gives you a digital copy.

Watch From Anywhere

You can access your digital movie collection from any screen or device with internet. Some of the places you can watch Vudu movies and shows include: smart TVs, internet-connected Blu-ray players, game consoles, streaming devices (like Apple TV, Roku, or Chromecast), Nvidia Shield, iOS and Android devices, as well as Windows 10 devices. Vudu also has a mobile app that receives high ratings in the app store.

The Bad

  • Expensive Rental Prices
  • Charged Per Upload to UltraViolet

Expensive Rental Prices

Services like Netflix or HuluPlus cost only $7.99 per month for unlimited viewing while just one movie on Vudu could cost you $4.99, and a TV episode will run you a couple dollars. If you want to just watch one film, you can buy it from other websites. Vudu does not provide rental options for live TV like sports or news.

Charged Per Upload to UltraViolet

As we mentioned before, you can upload any UltraViolet movies you've purchased to Vudu. However, Vudu will charge you for each movie that you upload (between $2-$5).

gavel

The Bottom Line

If you are watching Vudu like you would use an unlimited streaming service like Netflix or Hulu, it will get pretty pricey. However, if you want to use vudu to purchase a few select movies or films, it could be a perfect video streaming option for you. Many only use Vudu for its free library of content.

With Vudu, you get access to a wide selection of movies and TV shows, and most important of all, you get them as fast as possible. There is no contract or subscription with Vudu, so if you don't like what you are getting, then you can stop and find another company to stream with. Overall, we recommend considering the top rated companies before making a final decision.

I am a little ashamed to say that I think I have a movie addiction. I rent movies often. I've been using Prime Video for years. Recently I was introduced to Vudu and I can say with 100% honestly that Vudu is considerably better. It's small things like the separate sections for "Premium New Release" and "New to Rent Movies". On Prime video those are 1 section so I would find something that I wanted to rent and THEN find out that it's $20. However the biggest problem that I had with Prime Video was the fact that they use IMDB for movie ratings. IMDB is easily the worst movie rating platform. It is so obviously bombarded with fake ratings to trick you into renting movies. Vudu is a godsend. Thank you Vudu!

They carry a great selection of movies. They also carry concerts. And they're free to watch most of the time. If you live on a budget it's a great option for watching your favorite movie from 10 years ago or something more current.

Hard to believe that a title that I used dozens of times to test new surround sound equipment with, suddenly got dropped from my account. They, like other irresponsible companies blame the customer. "A movie cannot be dropped without the customer initiating it". Hmmm...I don't have access to any systems to get at the data, and I sure as heck would not call in to have a movie deleted. You'd have to really dislike that movie. They said it would be looked into, investigated. They came back and said to check the filters. "Is a common occurrence?" I've never used the filters once. But I was a good boy, and checked anyhow - thought maybe there might be a software glitch. Well, no glitch and no credit was issued. Ironically, I see this story repeated in other 1-2 star reviews of customers who have had the same happen to them. Apparently, Vudu is not paying their IT people enough, and maybe angry employees go around deleting customer data, or they don't want to work tickets reporting fraudulent activity. Why was THIS movie dropped? Anything to do with the fact that most email providers delete emails after a certain amount of time? I have receipts of my other purchases dating back 3 years, but not 4. What a coincidence. Looks like you use this service at your own risk - buyer beware. I am moving on to other streaming movie service providers, I'm done with these clowns.

I have purchased probably 40 movies on Vudu! They were excellently priced (including the bundles) and it stores them in a digital video recorder for use at any time you choose to watch them after purchase! They do not expire once you have purchased them and you do not lose them! I have purchased some of my go-to all-time favorites and I have purchased some new movies that were just released in theaters and have never been sorry that I chose Vudu!

I have my ups and downs at times with VUDU with the app being glitchy when updates are going on, but sometimes that can be expected and can't be helped even other major streaming service apps have had the occasional glitch when I have used them or certain content I've wanted to watch just didn't want to work. VUDU, however is wonderful if people would only give it a chance. My family loves watching movies and tv shows quite often, and the fact that we are able to purchase our favorites and watch them from anywhere is amazing. Especially, without having to worry about that the content is going to be taken down or replaced with something else like a normal streaming service. Also, being able to slowly use the disc to digital service and have most of our DVDs turned into digital copies for just a few dollars is really great. There are someone that unforatelty the disc to digital won't allow us to transfer to digital, but that has more to do with copyright and rights to those particular movies, and nothing to do with VUDU themselves. VUDU often has great weekly sales, and some great finds for older movies or even newer ones if you watch the sales and I often safe movies to a Wishlist and when it has a good sale price buy it to own. Love their service and hope they are around for a long time to come.

We have really enjoyed VUDU. It has allowed us to consolidate our movie collection that was in the cloud, all into one place. Add to that the ease of taking your collection with you when you travel with a ROKU stick and you are all set. To date, have only stayed at one resort where the whole tv was boxed in and there was no access to use a ROKU. Vudu allows us to watch our tv shows and movies wherever we are. When there have been any issues, they have been very available to try to remedy them. The only issue we have had is some of the coding of genres and I don't think that is VUDU. but the studios who originate the codes. For example the newer Cinderella should show up under Family & Kids but it doesn't. I just wish Disney would get on board again with their services and allow the disc to digital conversion. We have so many Disney movies that are not in the cloud that our grandchildren would enjoy. That being said, I refuse to pay full price twice for a Disney movie.

Phenomenal streaming site. Has one of the largest UV libraries plus has several hundred movies that aren't ultraviolet compliant yet. Their disc to digital program is very affordable, plus when you convert over 10 movies the price gets cut in half. Customer service is great. Had an issue with Walmart saying they couldn't upload my movies to the site. Called vudu customer service and they told me every Walmart has the capability and to demand to talk to a manager. Did that and finally found someone who could help.

I've always considered Vudu to be the Youtube alternative, but lately I have been using Vudu a lot more than Youtube. They do not seem to moderate and remove videos that "trigger" the population with offense. I can't say how content creation is, as I haven't used this service yet. I do enjoy finding videos to watch for education and entertainment purposes. I think Vudo has gained popularity over the years. They are quickly becoming my go to video streaming app.

Vudu is great because you don't have to keep up with DVD or Blue Ray discs. It's all online and you can watch it almost anywhere there's Wifi. I especially like the bundled packages, that way I have all of the sequels organized in one place. For example, How to Train Your Dragon 1, 2 and 3. The problem is that I bought the bundled package of How to Train Your Dragon 1 and 2. A few years later, they released the 3rd one. So I bought the bundled package with all 3 because in the past, Vudu would refund me for the bundled package of 1 and 2 and remove them from my account. But apparently they've stopped doing this if you've bought a movie over 30 days ago. Sequels are released a lot further out than 30 days from the original movie or the sequel. That's extremely frustrating!!!!I don't like watching the 1st and 2nd movies that are bundled together and then having to search for the 3rd one elsewhere. Like I said, I like for all of my movies with sequels to be bundled together and organized that way. But now Vudu refuses to do that anymore. They're not losing money by any means. They're just being jerks.

I really like this company it makes streaming for new movies fairly easy way better than having to actually go to the store and buy a DVD I only wish that when they have the newest movies available they would also give you the option to rent the movie instead of just owning it instead you have to wait for a while before your able to rent it so kinda sucks but it's ok.... I also kinda wish they had an area of all the movies you've purchased in one place it about you but I dnt have the best memory so having to search movies I already own kinda sucks it'd be nice to be able to go to a tab of all the movies I've purchased in one area cuz honestly sometimes it what I wanna watch until I see the cover or read the title

I took a picture of my Child’s Play DVD barcode to upload so that I could have a digital copy in my VUDU library. It costs $2.00, and I’ve used the feature numerous times without a problem. Except this time, it actually redeemed some 1978 movie also named Child’s Play. I figured no problem, I’m sure they will refund me, or maybe upload the movie I wanted. Nope. Customer service asked for a picture of my DVD, like they were going ti fix the problem, but they did nothing. Horrible customer service.

Started out awesome, now it’s complete garbage. I have over 350 movies (many of which have just ‘disappeared’ from my account) that I paid full price (ie bought) for. The app doesn’t load, movies go missing, you can’t download movies for offline viewing any longer. The service is horrendous. There are so many better options available that are more reliable than Vudu. I wouldn’t walk from Vudu, I’d run. This company should be class actioned and criminally investigated for fraudulent business practices.

Absolutely horrible service. Confusing, overly complicated to rent a movie. Plus, they charged me then didn’t give me access to watch the movie that I rented. And to add insult to injury when I requested a refund they said I needed to create an account which I had already done I just gave up. It wasn’t worth the four bucks of hell of dealing with these guys. Never again.

I had a problem streaming one time in the few years I have used Vudu. I like the quality of the movies I watch for the price they charge, which is about the same as everyone else (Amazon, Fandango, etc.). Recently, what I didn’t like, is I purchased Joker for $19.99 on Vudu. Approximately two weeks later, Joker went on sale on Vudu for $9.99 and they would not refund me the difference. I don’t feel like that’s good customer service. They responded that they don’t price match. Shame on them.

For the second time now Vudu has dropped titles from 'My Movies'. These are movies which a higher price was paid for to obtain a digital copy which was redeemed with Vudu. The movies were listed in 'My Movies' and now they're, poof, gone. Vudu customer service responds to check my filters and a second response saying they're; "unable to locate" the missing movies which is the whole problem. Be forewarned, Vudu can and will just drop movies you payed for, ironically at Wal-Mart which own Vudu, redeemed and watched. Not only is this bad business it may violate consumer protection laws in some states. Use Vudu at your own risk and don't expect any satisfaction with them should an issue arise.

Vudu customer service sucks. Paid for a movie last night. The movie didn't become available. I called them to sort it out. The agent I spoke with was not helpful. Her solution of "try the transaction again" doesn't work when my bank shows the $ as deducted already. They said they couldn't reverse the charge until it was final. Its the weekend, so not happening. I asked to speak with her supervisor. She kept claiming to be waiting on her supervisor while stringing me along for a full hour. After which she said the supervisor wasn't taking any more calls and to call back today. I emailed the company through facebook letting them know about my experience. Got a reply back that there was nothing they could do and if the transaction is still showing in a week to let them know. Meanwhile, my money is gone and I still don't have the movie I was trying to buy. I don't recommend buying movies directly from them if you are looking forward to watching it at that time. Buy a hard copy.

Vudu has terrible customer service. When you have suggested improvements to the service they blow you off. I suggested a reset button for within each title that you own so you can reset it to an "unwatched" status and start over once you have finished. That was 6 years ago and nothing. After joying with Fandango, I asked if they would move the "upgrade" button to the end of the menu rather than the beginning. That has been months and in both occasions, they acted as if I "the customer" was being unreasonable. I don't understand this hostility toward the "end user" and the complete lack of quality customer service. I'm now looking for a better option to watch all my UV Movies and TV shows. I hate VUDU now and I used to love it when it was the only thing out there. They just do NOT care about you.

I have not had a worse experience renting a movie.. I bought shin Godzilla about 4 days ago. The app told me that I had 30 days to watch it and once I started to watch it that would leave 7 days left on the movie. The movie now has 2 days left and I never even attempted to watch it. Now coming back to today, I tried watching the movie for hours. I reset my wifi, hardwired it, checked my ping and did a ton of research just to find out it’s one of the worst sites to rent or buy movies on. This leave a bad taste in my mouth after seeing how many people went through the same thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s HDX HD or SD; the movie buffers and never lets me see it to begin with. My experience with VUDU has been weeks and weeks of dissatisfaction with their storage cloud services. I have complained to the BBB and FTC about their tactics. My daughter who is disabled uses VUDU as her primary source of entertainment. She is unable to complete day to day tasks but enjoys watching her collection of movies immensely. In July she called me at work that VUDU had deleted over 300 of her titles, Some she had on that cloud service since 2013. As her guardian for over 30 years and her mother I was outraged that they could do this without any notification. I have sent emails for weeks which they no longer bother to respond. My next step may be to file a Class action Suit against VUDU with the Department of disabilities attorneys.

Bait and switch movie list. Offers certain videos FREE WITH COMMERCIALS, but when I got there, despite the movie that was listed as free with commercials in both my Roku search AND Vudu's search/movie lineup--when I clicked on the movie to watch it, I was only offered the option of buy or rent, NO free view free with commercials. I despise such tactics and despite their having some movies actually free with commercials, because they advertised the ONE I wanted to watch (which brought me TO THEIR CHANNEL) as free with commercials, but was NOT--I removed Vudu from my channel lineup and will not give them another chance. Don't bait and switch me!

First, many thanks for the free movies. My budget is limited and cable is not an option. The only suggestion I have is that Vudu offer a "search field" to key in movie names so that they come up right away. It takes much too long to locate the movie you want.
