There are many solar companies out there, but which one actually provides the most value and best customer service? We've made it our mission to find out.
After conducting exhaustive research on the solar industry and gathering hundreds of Sunrun reviews, we've weighed the good and the bad and discovered Sunrun to be one of the top installers of solar panels based on a variety of criteria points.
Sunrun, which is the nation’s largest residential solar, storage, and energy service company, has installed over 1,600 megawatts of solar power and helped hundreds of thousands of consumers in 19 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico to gain energy independence.
Sunrun is the pioneer of the solar-as-a-service model and continues to drive innovation of solar generation, storage, and energy services and technologies. The rooftop solar provider's mission is to create a planet run by the sun.
To fit customer needs, Sunrun offers several financing options, including solar leases, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), prepayments, outright purchases, and loans.
Sunrun solar lease and PPA options give customers the chance to reap the benefits of a home solar system for zero to little upfront cost.
The prepayment option features all of the same benefits as the lease option, except the customer doesn't have to worry about the hassle of monthly payments.
Purchasing a Sunrun solar system outright provides customers with long-term savings, while financing a Sunrun solar system through a loan allows customers to make payments to own their system, which provides long-term benefits.
Sunrun understands that every customer's home, lifestyle, and savings goal is unique.
As a result, the company customizes every system it installs to the customer's needs using its own proprietary Automated Site Modeling design technology. With just a few pieces of information and satellite imagery of the rooftop, Sunrun’s Automated Site Modeling software quickly designs a custom solar system to maximize energy production.
Sunrun strives to make switching to clean energy as simple and hassle-free as possible for its customers. The rooftop solar provider saves time by taking care of everything from scheduling to permitting and allowing people to follow their installation progress through the mySunrun mobile app. The design and installation process is as follows:
If customers choose to lease or obtain a PPA, Sunrun will own the system and, therefore, is responsible for all maintenance and repairs of the system. Additionally, Sunrun will refund customers if the panels installed on their roof ever underperform.
Other benefits of Sunrun's product include a 10-year warranty on systems that are purchased and up to a 25-year warranty on systems that are leased. Each solar customer's Sunrun contract also includes a roof warranty, which protects the roof from leaks or holes.
In addition, Sunrun provides its solar customers with daily system monitoring for no additional fee. The company's monitoring team oversees all all Sunrun systems and keeps an eye on production levels. If something happens or if performance dips, Sunrun will contact you as soon as possible to get things fixed.
Sunrun provides a U.S.-based customer care team that is ready to answer questions and help resolve any issues that may arise.
Sunrun offers a battery storage option that can be purchased or leased called Brightbox. With Brightbox, customers can enjoy safe, clean, and reliable backup power in the event of a blackout.
Brightbox also helps customers manage electricity costs by seamlessly optimizing when a home uses electricity generated by solar panels, stored in the battery, or from the grid.
Sunrun provides an abundance of helpful information on its website and strives to be very transparent with its customers. The company's website includes detailed solar education and FAQ sections, a helpful Guarantee page, and an informative "Plans and Services" page that will help customers better understand Sunrun's products and how to start taking advantage of solar power.
When it comes to solar installation, Sunrun is one of the most experienced companies in the solar industry. In fact, the company is one of the few solar installers that has installed over 1,600 megawatts of solar energy.
As a result, Sunrun has offset 3.7 million tons of carbon emissions and helped more than 240,000 customers to control their electricity bills.
Sunrun currenty offers solar energy services in the following states and territories:
Sunrun's website includes a variety of articles and helpful, easy-to-digest resources, including information on solar panels, plans and services, the cost of solar, warranties, installations, rebates and incentives, net metering, local information, solar education, and more.
A majority of Sunrun's installations are performed in-house, meaning that Sunrun employees will install the solar systems themselves, which is ideal. Occasionally, the company will contract other installers to work on homes that are too remote for Sunrun itself to reach.
While Sunrun does train and approve these third-party contractors before they work on a home, this outsourcing strategy has often led to inconsistencies in performance upon installation. Consequently, customer satisfaction concerning the installation quality and overall experience varies.

They've been responsive and anything that's come up on they have taken preemptory action to ensure that the system continues to operate efficiently. Instillation went fine. People showed up when they said they would and they did the installation very quickly and efficiently. There was one minor glitch that they corrected promptly because they were monitoring the system and realized that something that wasn't working right so they came out and fixed it before I even realized there was a problem.
The salesman that came to my home was very thorough and explain all the details and how it works. He was very good which is why I choose SunRun. The instillation went very good. They were very neat and clean. They even laid out tarps when they went in the attic. I've had SunRun for about four years now and my electric bill has gone down, especially the months like spring and summer with air conditioning and stuff. So, I'm really pleased with the money I save.
The instilation process went smoothly and they were very professional. There customer service is always available.
Installation process seemed to be pretty seamless. I wish they had an app to see how much electricity the panels are making. Then I could see which panels are working and how much each panel actually should be putting out comparied to what it is actually putting out.
For instillation they sent out their crew supervisor who came they and went very quickly. They were very organized and professional. They completed walking us through and explained what they were going to do. Then after instillation, they explained the whole process once again and how everything works. Our bills have been nonexistent so I mean we're getting a good return on our investment. During the whole process support information was provided and the follow up on on everything has been very good.
SunRun was very quick in responding to any questions I had and kept me informed of the process on the project. There customer service was excellent. The equipment has worked hundred percent since the day it was turned on and I haven't had any problems whatsoever.
Sunrun's equipment is very good quality and the installation was good.
The specific representative that was sent to our home was professional she was reasonable and took time to listen to what our needs were. She found the right number of panels and installation to set our scheduling. I couldn't have asked for a better customer service. If I had a question they are always available and responsive even after the installation.
The sales team listened to me. Unfortunetly, the inverter went out after two weeks so i miss out all the sun in the winter.
We had some issues with our salesman but other than that they have been good. The salesman led us to believe that instillation would take place within two weeks and we would have solar. Instead it took like four to five months.
I chose SunRun because I checked some reviews online and I was impressed they actually offered leasing plans. They we were very clear, forthright, and honest about what the whole process was going to be like. The instillation process was just very professionally done and they were very interested in making it look good on the outside which I really appreciate. They rearranged the panels a different way so it would look more aesthetically pleasing. I thought was great that they really are concerned about how we're actually living with these panels.
SunRun saves me money on my electricity bills. If I have any questions about my account or anything they handle it professionaly. The installation process was excellent. They went up on the roof and put every solar panel in one by one. Then they did the electricity really well from that from the basement o on up to the top of the roof so it was definitely a professional job.
We like SunRun because they have been a very good company. Whenever we have had a problem that we needed fixed, they are prompted about coming right out to check our system. The men who come are very polite and listen to what the problem is and are just very good with the customer. The instillaton process went great, they did everything they needed to do and were very good at cleaning up after themselves.
I did not see any benefits to adding solar for the first year. I was still paying two full utility bills. Then at the end of the first year I suddenly started seeing credits against my normal electric bill from solar.
The instillation process went very smoothy. The equpment had to be moved one time after they got inspected but otherwise it's been really smooth. They were almost always responsive but there were a few times that they weren't.
When the system went down I don't have to call them because they could see that it went down and they came to fix it. So, they are monitoring my system and of taking care of it without me having to worry, so it's a worry free system for me. They got the instillation done it on time and the quality of the work was superior.
They have been responsive and clearly communicated. The installation process took 2 days and was handled by a safety conscious crews that knew what they were doing. It cuts my electric bill in half with no charge.
We researched different solar companies and types that we have we have done. We choose SunRun because we wanted the best quality. Their customer service was able to answer all of our questions and seem very efficient and knowledgeable.
I had a solar system installed on my property in Jan. 2019. It was sold through Horizon Solar who is under contract with Sunrun. They came out to the house and laid it out and installed the system in about 3 days. Very professional. It was after they left the problems started. They told me that they were going to leave materials (5) 2"x 10"x 16' boards and a piece of metal trim 10' long in front of my property. They said a bigger truck would pick it next week. That was fine. I left the country and did not return till the first of May. While I was gone my neighbor was watching my home and taking in the mail. She contacted me at one point and said the sprinkler system for part of the yard was not working. I told her I would check it when I returned home. Went to get my mail the following day that I returned and noticed they had not removed the material from my property. I contacted the salesman about this and I also told him I had not received the Incentive Chk. For $1768.00 which was supposed to take 4 to 6 wks. to process and it was now more than 12 wks. The salesman said I would have to contact the head office. I thought maybe the sprinkler system was a stuck valve. Pulled the cover off the valves and turned on the system. Nothing, so I tapped each valve. The valve kicked in and I heard a rumble then water started shooting everywhere. Turned it off and that is when I found as I was digging that the pipes were all broken. They had filled the trench and I am guessing that I would have it fixed. Oh the concrete patch job they did on the side walk looks like crap also. I contacted Sunrun help desk and told my story to a person in that department. He said the incentive check was not part of Sunrun. He thought it was through the company they sub contract with. He did say they would contact Horizon Solar to find out what they were doing in regards to the removal of the material and repairs to the sprinkler system. Sent him and Horizon photos. I then called Horizon. They said the Incentive checks were now taking 8 to 12 wks. Asked to speak to a supervisor. Was told one would have to call me back & they never did. I also told both companies about the sprinkler system. They did have another company contact me saying they were a sub for Horizon and they would be out in 10 days to fix everything. A worker did show up. He said he was not told what was wrong. He said his truck was too small to remove the material & someone else would have to come with a bigger truck. We then went to where the sprinkler system was. I showed him where they had used the trenching machine and broken the pipes when they trenching. I have photos showing where they back filled the trench. It had settled and you can see where it went through the grass an into the flower bed and next to the main valve system for the sprinklers. What made me mad was they threw away the broken pieces and covered everything back up like nothing had happened. The guy could not figure how the pipes were connected and did not have the material to try and fix the system so he would have to come back. That was 4 wks. ago & have not seen him again. I have been watering everything with a hose which is a big job as it is a big yard. The salesmen brought the incentive check out on June 3rd. He saw what had happened said be patient. I have contacted an attorney and have an appointment to see if I can cancel the contract and have them remove their equipment. Have also contacted the better Business Bureau and am in the process of filing a complaint with them.
I started the evaluating process in November and signed a contract in December. design and plans were provided to me in also i n December. Work began 1st week in January with some roof tile replacement (at no cost to me) and panel/inverter install the within the next 2 weeks. There was a short lag time waiting for inspections from building dept. and city of Henderson. I was placed online by mid February and been cranking out kw's since. During this whole process , I was constantly kept informed of the install progress. To date , the system is producing the power that they promised and even extra. Since March , NV Energy owes me a power rebate. I couldn't be more satisfied. Be sure to request critter guards with the installation.
They will not get my business because they were rude and pushy! They contacted me and I asked to view their website and discuss with my husband. I said to give me a week initially and they got pushy wanting to give me a quote. I said that I will check out their website, discuss with my husband and then contact them. This was yesterday. The woman tried to insist on getting my information and I firmly said that I will not even entertain the idea if you don't stop pushing... well today I had 2 texts and 4 missed calls. My phone kept going off during a procedure! NOW YOU LOST MY BUSINESS AND I WILL NOT BE REFERRING.
Very professional and trained personnel from sales to technical
The representative was very good at explaining everything and answering questions. He seemed very honest and did not do a "high pressure" sales pitch -- which I completely appreciated. I would highly recommend this company if you are shopping for solar.
We cancel the contract the same day after reading it. They scam you not giving technical info. You can't run an entire house with 3823 kwh. They want to sell you the $.135/kwh, not true, amps? to cover your use. PGE will have to supply it as usual, Beware, I fill sorry for the people that doesn't know about solar system and how it works.
Very professional and efficient the installation was seamless y and quick I highly recommend sun run
I couldn't be more unhappy with this company! The reason we decided to sign up with this solar company is because their salesman assured us that if there were any issues with our system, it would be fixed immidently. This couldn't be more further from the truth. Two days after my panels were turned on, an error message appeared. We called the company to let them know. We were told that someone would call us back in two days. Two days later we were given an appointment for two WEEKS later! I put in a complaint to speak to a supervisor to address the fact that my system will not be looked at for two weeks. Not only did no one call me back, no one came to look at my system on my appointment date! When I called to speak to a supervisor I was finally given an appointment a week later. The person who came did not call us with any information. The next day the error light was on a again. That was June 6th. Today is June 12, still no word from SunRUn. When I complained about this to the supervisor I was told that he was unable to fix the problem and needed to come back with more people to help him. I asked when that appointment would be. I was then told that my expectations were too high for having the system fixed in a timely manner. I was told that they are a California based company and have little manpower in NY. That is the complete opposite of what I was told when I signed up. I still have no appointment date for when someone is going to fix my machine. My husband has had to reset the system everyday for the month that we had it. Stay away from this company!
Too aggressive, and had over 20 telephone calls from different persons from SunRun calling at all times of the Day and night
Quick response, product knowledge, professionalism and warranty
We are still in the process, but so far, everything is going well. The process is moving along and the guys who are assigned to our account are updating us on a regular basis. There have been no surprises or hidden costs ... yet. Ask me again when it's all done.
Beware!!! When your panels stop producing power they won’t replace the bad panels. Sunrun will just tell you that your other panels will make up for it. Loss production is loss production!
we were told there would be "no monthly cost" to lease the panels for 20 years, that all expenses would be paid to install, that it would all be free. Once they get you hooked, they run your credit. Why run credit if its "Free" ? this company is endorsed as a vendor thru ComEd, so no respect for them either.
0 stars. They confirmed the appointment 2x. They did not show up. I wasted a morning waiting for them
App is glitchy. Had to jump through a lot of hoops to get my savings analysis, probably because they know I'm losing money. When I finally got the analysis, I saw I was essentially losing an average of $50 a month leasing solar panels from Sunrun. I have emailed and called and left a voicemail to discuss these results and someone coming to check my system for maximum effectiveness, but have received no reply. That is why I rate this company poorly.
Very through and comprehensive plus Volf was very learned in the process!
overpriced service starts out very attractive and builds to being so over normal cannot imagine it ever getting there
I was referred by a friend. Your prices went up 58% since he had panels installed. COLA only 3% per year.
Sunday, May 12, 2019, our Nest thermostat indicated a problem with power supply to our A/C unit. Checked our new electrical service panel. A circuit breaker for the A/C unit electrical power was tripped and would not reset. Thereafter, discovered that the breaker in the NEW electrical service panel, installed by SunRun/Infinity around August of 2018, was not properly installed!!!! The circuit breaker terminal for the A/C was LOOSE causing a dead short. A number of other circuit breaker terminal screws were LOOSE as well. Additionally, the breaker for the A/C unit, installed with the new electrical service, is a 70 AMP breaker. The A/C unit technical specifications plate, clearly and permanently installed on the A/C unit, calls for no more than 50 AMPS. Our electrical service circuit breaker for the A/C unit installed by Infinity/SunRun, is up sized 20 AMPs more than CODE. NEVER UP SIZE A CIRCUIT BREAKER Up-sizing a circuit breaker or fuse will cause the circuit wiring to over heat. Overheated electrical wiring will create a serious fire hazard. Overheated electrical wiring could easily result in a serious fire! ANY electrical issue with our A/C unit that increases the amperage load would have to exceed 70 amps instead of the CODE value of 50 amps. That can result in enormous overheating AND FIRE. As soon and possible, arrangements will be made with our electrical contractor to change the breaker to CODE. Monday, May 13, 2019, called the SunRun customer service line (posted on our new electrical service) at 855-478-6786. They committed to having someone contact me by email and/or sending a local technician, if in the area. Provided my email address,/phone. Did not receive a call or follow up on Monday or Tuesday or any day since. May 13, 2019, called our trusted A/C contractor, who, on Wednesday, May 14, 2019, analyzed the problem, tightened the terminal screws and recommended installing a 50 AMP circuit breaker. Today, Wednesday, May 15, 2019, chatted with the online customer service rep who committed to having a service manager/tech call me. Told online customer service rep not to bother; I will have this fixed at my own expense. If they want to contact me so I can show them video and documentation, fine. For the time being, SunRun and Infinity services credibility is cratered, gone, finished. Loose circuit breaker terminals, up sized circuit breakers. To some, may not seem to be worth complaining about. If you know the dangers of over sized circuit breakers AND loose terminal connections; if you realize that your house could be subject to dangerous overheated wiring and electrical devices, your hair would be on fire too.
Extreme lack of product knowledge by your sales rep.,
Do Not get into this process expecting it will be a quick turnaround for your service turn-up. do not expect good communication from your coordinator/manager, and do not expect any form of competence from their installation teams. i started my process in January 2019, it is now May 2019, and construction completed first week of March 2019. you may ask why it has taken so long, well it is because their project management is completely mediocre, their communication is almost non-existent, and their construction teams forget too many things. here is a timeline of this "install": January - Signed contract - was advised this would be up and running by May 1st, and start being billed June 1st so i could skip the outrageous prices of my local provider. first week of March - construction completed (was promised someone would be out for inspection within 1-2 weeks max) first week of April - oh no we realized that we forgot to submit pictures of our work to the inspectors to get the inspection scheduled, this will take more time. Mid April - photos sent out first inspection failed completely they used the wrong wires. late April - Failed second inspection (have no idea why) May 7th - Third Inspection (today in fact) - hopefully this one passes because there are still 2 other steps before i can even turn it on and start producing. this has been a complete mess with no accountability from sunrun.
We requested a quote for solar after speaking to a representative at Costco. We set an appointment and the salesman called and told us they had to run our credit to prequalify... They pulled my credit twice and never showed for our appointment. I left messages at their office and never got a return call. I have excellent credit so this wasn't the issue. I think it was just a scam to get people's credit information.
Purchased system cash $24,000 to bypass lease. Came and turned our service off two times when all cash was paid up front. Ruined a 50 year old Jade plant that is irreplaceable by stepping on it to turn the service off. Getting apologies today after two years and what they call "Apeasement" but it will take them two weeks to figure out amount. Wow really Sunrun, shame on you.
Lacking in technical information and references
More knowledgeable staff regarding layouts, online interaction was great. Seamless integration from sales force to order stage. Awesome working through Costco for the sales.
the solarpennel produse mor kw then we use aps gif us a credit
Not much interaction at this point. What I have seen so is what I except
I am very satisfied with my service so far. The overall experience that i had from start to finish of install was terrific.
Because it would have been a zero if not for Tommy Fox and his intervention to get system fixed for the 3rd time!!!! And Travis for his excellent field service and knowledge
I have saved money. They have delivered on their promises The have proven trustworthey.
Good service! Nathan was outstanding. Installation was seemless.
Wonderfull works well the savings are amazing
