There are many solar companies out there, but which one actually provides the most value and best customer service? We've made it our mission to find out.
After conducting exhaustive research on the solar industry and gathering hundreds of Sunrun reviews, we've weighed the good and the bad and discovered Sunrun to be one of the top installers of solar panels based on a variety of criteria points.
Sunrun, which is the nation’s largest residential solar, storage, and energy service company, has installed over 1,600 megawatts of solar power and helped hundreds of thousands of consumers in 19 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico to gain energy independence.
Sunrun is the pioneer of the solar-as-a-service model and continues to drive innovation of solar generation, storage, and energy services and technologies. The rooftop solar provider's mission is to create a planet run by the sun.
To fit customer needs, Sunrun offers several financing options, including solar leases, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), prepayments, outright purchases, and loans.
Sunrun solar lease and PPA options give customers the chance to reap the benefits of a home solar system for zero to little upfront cost.
The prepayment option features all of the same benefits as the lease option, except the customer doesn't have to worry about the hassle of monthly payments.
Purchasing a Sunrun solar system outright provides customers with long-term savings, while financing a Sunrun solar system through a loan allows customers to make payments to own their system, which provides long-term benefits.
Sunrun understands that every customer's home, lifestyle, and savings goal is unique.
As a result, the company customizes every system it installs to the customer's needs using its own proprietary Automated Site Modeling design technology. With just a few pieces of information and satellite imagery of the rooftop, Sunrun’s Automated Site Modeling software quickly designs a custom solar system to maximize energy production.
Sunrun strives to make switching to clean energy as simple and hassle-free as possible for its customers. The rooftop solar provider saves time by taking care of everything from scheduling to permitting and allowing people to follow their installation progress through the mySunrun mobile app. The design and installation process is as follows:
If customers choose to lease or obtain a PPA, Sunrun will own the system and, therefore, is responsible for all maintenance and repairs of the system. Additionally, Sunrun will refund customers if the panels installed on their roof ever underperform.
Other benefits of Sunrun's product include a 10-year warranty on systems that are purchased and up to a 25-year warranty on systems that are leased. Each solar customer's Sunrun contract also includes a roof warranty, which protects the roof from leaks or holes.
In addition, Sunrun provides its solar customers with daily system monitoring for no additional fee. The company's monitoring team oversees all all Sunrun systems and keeps an eye on production levels. If something happens or if performance dips, Sunrun will contact you as soon as possible to get things fixed.
Sunrun provides a U.S.-based customer care team that is ready to answer questions and help resolve any issues that may arise.
Sunrun offers a battery storage option that can be purchased or leased called Brightbox. With Brightbox, customers can enjoy safe, clean, and reliable backup power in the event of a blackout.
Brightbox also helps customers manage electricity costs by seamlessly optimizing when a home uses electricity generated by solar panels, stored in the battery, or from the grid.
Sunrun provides an abundance of helpful information on its website and strives to be very transparent with its customers. The company's website includes detailed solar education and FAQ sections, a helpful Guarantee page, and an informative "Plans and Services" page that will help customers better understand Sunrun's products and how to start taking advantage of solar power.
When it comes to solar installation, Sunrun is one of the most experienced companies in the solar industry. In fact, the company is one of the few solar installers that has installed over 1,600 megawatts of solar energy.
As a result, Sunrun has offset 3.7 million tons of carbon emissions and helped more than 240,000 customers to control their electricity bills.
Sunrun currenty offers solar energy services in the following states and territories:
Sunrun's website includes a variety of articles and helpful, easy-to-digest resources, including information on solar panels, plans and services, the cost of solar, warranties, installations, rebates and incentives, net metering, local information, solar education, and more.
A majority of Sunrun's installations are performed in-house, meaning that Sunrun employees will install the solar systems themselves, which is ideal. Occasionally, the company will contract other installers to work on homes that are too remote for Sunrun itself to reach.
While Sunrun does train and approve these third-party contractors before they work on a home, this outsourcing strategy has often led to inconsistencies in performance upon installation. Consequently, customer satisfaction concerning the installation quality and overall experience varies.

Difficulty in removing lien while refinancing. Lack of offering home battery that charges while the grid is down
Sunrun does not tell the truth about their product or service. They do not support their customers and I have to take them to court in order to resolve the conflicts that I have.
responsive to questions, I wish the app on the phone is better, then would get 5 stars, the app sucks, does not even remember who I am
Service is very good. We save money on electric bills. The installation is well done. So far there's no problem. Thank you Sunrun!
From the start of the installaton to the collecting electricity, the Sun Team was very customer friendly. They explained how to operate and maintain the Solar syatem. I have been saving around $100,00 a month on my electric bill. It even collects power during a Full Moon. I would reccommend going solar with SunRun..
good product, installers shortcut safety procedures, agents are not upfront
Can't contact anyone. No one has ever come by to see if I am happy. I would like a back up battery.
0 stars. Warning! Do not do business with Sunrun, or its installation arm, Horizon Solar. Dealing with them (after the initial meeting with the salesman (Brandon R) it was and continues to be a nightmare. The process of installation took about 6 months. 6 months of incompetence... missed appointments, bringing the wrong equipment etc. The list of frustration is endless. During the process, they will try to reassure you that "all will be well", and have you talk to there "customer advocate" (Ray B). Ask yourself the question "why does a company need a "customer advocate"? But the most important thing is that, they seem to run a bate and switch "con game". They promise (like in my situation) to almost completely eliminate your electric bill, except for the small payment to them. This is an outright lie! After the system was finally turned on, Im having to pay both my electric company AND Sunrun. So, in the end, there is NO benefit to having these ugly solar panels on my home, not to mention the danger of leaks from the rather haphazard installation. They might have answers to all these issues, but, PLEASE DON'T BELIEVE them. It looks like I may be heading to court, and have the expense of a lawyer to try to get out of this contract. Look elsewhere for your solar project, unless you want to enter a nightmare of your own.
My panels went down and they said they'd come out and fix it and they never showed up. The guy never called. I called them and it took him two hours to get back in touch with me. It's October the 3rd and I haven't had solar power function since August 5th.
They answered my phone calls and answered my questions. Nate sold everything to us. He was top notch and walked me through the whole process. I really enjoyed working with him.
When they were getting it set up we had a few problems. The people that actually installed it wasn't the problem. I had problems with the dates. They said they were going to do things on certain dates and it didn't happen. I haven't had any issues with the equipment.
I don't know if the equipment really works because I have too high of power bills and I would like to discontinue the service.
All the salesman that came out were very personable and sold us on it. Everything they've done so far has been good so no problems. The installation process was very good and very quick.
The installation was terrific. Everybody who showed up at my house was wonderful to work with. Everybody kept me informed about everything that was going on. It was just a very pleasant experience. It was one of the fastest installation that come in less than fifty days. I'm happy with everything that I have. Everything is working. I like SunRun does business.
When I call, the customer service is always there.
They answered my questions and they were very thorough. They did a good job of presenting the program. The installation was very organized. IT took a little longer than I thought it would take. They had good contractors and the quality of the work appeared to be very good. When I ask them to come out and check on some things they send them out immediately. They're easy to work with. So far I've been very satisfied with the service and the performance of the system. So far it has functioned very well.
Every time I had an issue or question or a concern calling, I was responded to very quickly. It went very smoothly. I've never had any experience with equipment before so I've only had mine two years but I haven't had any problems with it.
SunRun took care of everything with no problem. They're friendly, efficient, and they're proactive in following up on things. It went very smoothly, there were no problems. It was exactly the way they described it and they did it quickly and efficiently. It's been on my roof for several years and has been working as they told me it would.
I called them when we had a power outage and they never responded. I didn't find out until three weeks later because I called and they said that I was using it now, but they got out there and fixed it right away.
They had a little hiccup or two with getting me online but after that everything seemed to be fine. Installation was great. They work with the roofers. Everything seemed to work out good. Our equipment was very good. I wish they would have put in two or three more panels on the west side because the summertime after seven o'clock at night and I still have sunlight so I wouldn't be paying all that peak usage.
I've had no issues whatsoever. Installation was very quick and very smooth. It just cut my power bill considerably.
When we called, we've always gotten an answer promptly and if they had to call back or whatever. The installation went very smoothly. They were out the day they were supposed to come and everything went according to what we were told.
They did get back to me but it was kind of a slow process. Eventually everything did get taken care of, but I think it could have been done a little bit more timely. Installation was flawless. They came out when they said they were going to come, they put it in and they got it going. Everything was great. Less than one year, it had stopped working and something had to be replaced.
The installation process went pretty smooth, no issues. It was installed pretty quickly. It's performing as expected. One piece of feedback is that I requested to have them call me back and it's been over a month and I have not heard back.
They told me when they were going to be there and they were there and took care of it.
I've had excellent service with no problems. It was smooth and efficient. It was done in one day with no trouble. I'm very impressed with the equipment that they installed.
Don't do business with Sunrun. The installation was lengthy and was done wrong, the power company had to come THREE times until the gave us the permit. Sunrun owes me $500 for fees I had to pay an electrician for their mistakes, it has been months and they have not reimbursed me. They are arrogant company with ZERO consideration. Monthly payment by credit card is assessed $7.50 penalty. You can either send a check by US post (Who does that anymore) and not get penalized OR you can do an automatic bank draft. The Problem is that you have no say when they withdraw the money, they are unwilling to change the date to meet their customer's financial timing. I say, screw them, go with Tesla or anybody else. DON"T DO BUSINESS WITH SUNRUN, I WARNED YOU. I found NO redeeming qualities in my dealing with them.
I've only had one call back and that was handled promptly. Installation went smoothly she was done in about five hours after the permits and everything it was very fine confident young crew that came out to do it. Everything went well and and we're please we did it reflects in our in our utility bills.
It's been pretty smooth; no issues. They got it up and running there were there was one issue which they came back pretty quickly and resolved it actually.
The gentleman that came out and hooked up the SunRun was really good he was really nice guy. As far as I know what functions properly I do wish it gave me more or I wish that my A. P. S. bill was lower because I put this sun run on
I have never had a worse sales experience in my life. Misrepresentations, half-truths and flat out lies was the sale’s rep’s M.O. from the moment he stepped into my home. Here is the story: I stopped by the Sunrun kiosk at my local Costco and said I was interested in talking to a company representative about installing solar panels on my garage. I was clear, that I didn’t want panels on my home. Two days later a sales rep came to my house and presented a plan that filled the southern and western roof exposures of my house with panels. I immediately told him that this is not what I want. He banged around on his computer for minute and told me, no problem, he just submitted a “re-design” and it should be ready for me to look at very soon, but recommended we continue the presentation with the plan he had. I reiterated, that I’m not interested in a house full of panels. He was there for nearly 2 hours and the redesign that was going to be ready any moment, never came through. He gave the excuse that he was having trouble with his computer or something of that nature. When asked specific questions like how the tax incentives or Costco 10% rebate was calculated, he said he wasn’t really sure how those things worked. Against my better judgment, he convinced me that I should sign an agreement that didn’t commit me anything, but they needed it to complete that site visit and give me an accurate price quote. Again, I reiterated that I am interested in having panels on my garage and possibly only one roof surface of my main house. Fast forward- site visit tech comes with orders to measure for a plan to put panels on the entire house. I informed him that I told my sales rep on several occasions ( I even have it in writing) that I’m not interested in that plan. He said that info was never relayed to him. I called the sales rep and leave a message to complain. 30 minutes AFTER technician is there the sales rep texts me and says the tech has canceled the appointment. "That’s odd," I say, because he has been here half an hour and is measuring for the plan I have repeatedly said I do not want. He gives me a song and dance about how they have to measure and inspect all the roof surfaces for engineering purposes. On site tech tells me that is nonsense and also tells me that he got a message from his boss saying sales rep called and canceled our appointment, but it was too late, he was already there. About a week later, after being told the plan was almost done and all they needed to finish it was a copy of my electric bill, another tech shows up at our house unannounced with no scheduled appointment saying he needs to take a cover off of our electrical panel and take more measurements. Says the sales rep was supposed to schedule it with us and inform us he was coming. Additionally, they sent paperwork to the state saying they were installing solar at my house before they even showed me a plan to agree on. At this point I had had enough, and want out. I was told, "this isn't how we operate." Even the project manager was embarrassed by the unprofessional nature of the whole thing. Bottom line- BE CAREFUL!
We installed a 600kwh system - for the past two years it has amazingly produced an average of 615 kwh/mo so we have had NO Electric Bills and for each trueup we have received just over $100 - purrfect. We are happy with all aspects of the project including the system purchase through Costco.
Good service and knowledgeable people that give answers on the spot.
I wish I could give them zero stars. Solar array was disassembled on 12/26/18, and today 5/4/19 the panels are still sitting in my driveway. Workmen came on 4/16/19, did some work, but due to winds could not put the panels back on my roof. Next available appointment is 5/22/19. That puts it close to 5 months down. hopefully it's not a windy day or it'll probably another month of waiting. My panels were put back into service on 5/22/19 after being down since 12/26, 2018, at that time it was discovered that a meter connected to my system was not working. Since then Sunrun has scheduled 2 appointments that they did not show up for. Sunrun has no time frame when they will have the part or when the repair will be finished. Until the system is fully repaired I can not get a settlement for the almost 5 months of down time.
I leased a 83 panel unit for $55K, 4 1/2 years ago. This is a 20 year lease program. The first full year of installation I got a rebate from the electric company for $900. The second and third year, I kind of broke even. The forth year the panels were not work properly, so I ended paying for electric in the winter months. They then said all panels needed to be replaced. 6 months ago in installed 2 Tesler batteries. The company I used, was the same person who sold me the sunrun panels but worked for another company now. Sun run left our island and so did the techs. While they were installing they also confirmed that the panels needed replacement. They also notified Sunrun that 3 of the 4 inverters were turned off because it was not working. For over 6 months my unit has been working with just one inverter on or 25% production and the two batteries. I now have $300 monthly electric bills. They now claim it is the fault of the Tesler batteries. How can that be? Don't have to be a genius to figure out why it it not working, 75% of the unit is switched off because the panels are faulty. They are not replying to my questions and seemed to have abandoned their system. Very bad service. If you are in Hawaii, Haleakala Solar does a better job.
Very efficient, they did whay they said they would do.
No call back after installed how it''s working
I like SunRun, but haven't got response from them as far as cleaning the panels
They did a good job, but they did not tell me that I would noy be powering my house, I would be powering the grid. Even in the event of a blackout I would not have access to the power generated by my own panels.
Professionalism and great savings. I regret for not having earlier. My cost went down over 80%. Workmanship from the technicians are the best. Also it gives my house a super cool look. Anyone in the market looking for solar please check Sunrun
Helped us finance partly our obligation to repair the roof and electrical panel
As of this date (08-27-2019) our system is not working and hasen't since 08-13-2019! NV Energy bill for 0ver $200.00!! d it cost us around $500.00 for the last time it didn't work. We are retired, on a fixed income, and cannot afford these energy bills AND the mortgage bills for the solar system. A complaint has been made with SunRun and they said that they would give us a call in next 3 to 5 working days. That is unacceptable! We are going to have to pay NV Energy for all this time that your system is not working. We need to talk to Management and we would like to request our money back. )
I am beyond upset with the customer service that Sunrun has not provided me. Sunrun failed to seal holes into my inverter unit and when wasps made their home inside the electric inverter I was told Sunrun does not come and take care of it. How am I as a homeowner responsible for opening a electrical panel that is not my equipment nor have knowledge of opening such a unit. But none the less I was told to bad hire a exterminator to the tune of several hundred dollars. I would understand if the wasps built on outside of unit but they did not a hole was left in bottom of inverter that was not closed off. I felt Sunrun should take responsibility. They would not. I have video of wasps entering said hole and still they said they would not help me. I would not recommend Sunrun as a solar company if they leave people hanging like that. I have two dogs who play in yard next to those inverters and was less than pleased about their unwillingness to help not to mention how am I to know what type of shock I could get from opening up a sealed electrical unit . Seriously regretting my decision to use Sunrun
I was very pleased with SunRun Solar until I actually needed some help with a repair. My solar service has been down since February this year. In 10 days that will mark 7 months from the time of this review without solar service due to a necessary repair. In July my case manager indicated that it would finally be repaired soon, but it's still down. Now I can't even get him on the phone, and nobody is communicating with me. Stay away from SunRun.
because my bill is very high and have 21 panels ??
Great to work with, delivered on all of their commitments
They did exactly what they said they would do. Installation was timely and precise.
The PPA is hard to understand and not what was sold to us
I have found they cost more than others with homes the same size as mine.
My solor bill now almost 3 years later is just as much as my BGE bill at the start of this. There is no saving for sure . We not told up front that the rate increase each year . Should have stayed with out solor for this rate
