The Good

  • Bundling Options
  • Great DVR System
  • Lots of Available Channels

Bundling Options

Many cable companies offer the same products to their customers, which can make it difficult for a communications business to stand out. RCN does the best it can to keep up with competing companies by offering customers the best possible services. RCN has very competitive pricing. Like other companies, its services are sold in packages or bundles to help customers get the best possible price on multiple services. The most popular package at RCN includes digital TV and the Internet. All packages come with a price tag locked in for 12 months. After that agreed upon time period, RCN reserves the right to change a customer's monthly cost for services. This is part of the no contract guarantee to customers. No service commitment is required to sign up with RCN, but the price is only promised for a certain time period. The benefits of this are that any individual or business can cancel service with RCN at any given time. If a customer chooses to stay with RCN, after the standard 12 month time period of a locked in price, RCN can then change that price.

Great DVR System

The DVR system with RCN is a great benefit to customers. RCN offers several different options for the system which are all clearly organized on its website for customers to easily view. The best system available has the ability to record up to six shows at one time and has 1,000 hours of storage space available. As with all of the DVR options, this is an added price on the monthly bill.

Lots of Available Channels

The channel line-up at RCN is also impressive. Depending on the package a customer chooses, there are 394 available channels through RCN. The most basic of cable TV packages provides customers with 71 channels. This is a great channel line-up and provides customers with the benefit of having a wide variety of channels. Of course, like most cable companies, the channels are subject to the area where a customer is located. RCN provides customers with all local stations in addition to the extra ones offered through the purchased package.

The Bad

  • Limited Availability
  • Basic Mobile App

Limited Availability

There are a few things that should be looked at when considering choosing RCN as a primary cable provider. Although there are no major issues with this company, there are several items that could simply be improved upon. One of the biggest drawbacks to this company is its limited availability. RCN only offers services to individuals and business in five states across America. In those five states, only certain areas are eligible for RCN products. RCN provides business to Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C. metro area, Leigh Valley in eastern Pennsylvania, New York City, and Philadelphia. These areas are very specific and limit the number of customers who can benefit from RCN's services. RCN does have one of the largest customer followings for such a small service area in the United States.

Basic Mobile App

Like many other cable companies, RCN's mobile app falls a little short on its promises. In both the Android and Apple app stores, the app was rated three out of five stars. While this might not be a fantastic rating, it is relatively good compared to other cable company's mobile apps. This makes it an average service with room to improve. Customers rated the app very helpful, although slow in its loading of material. The app is available and free to all RCN customers to make sure they are able to access their TV anywhere on the go.

The Bottom Line

RCN is a great neighborhood cable provider for individuals and business in any of the five areas it services. RCN promises no contracts, but only guarantees a price for a year, after which the price is subject to change. RCN has a large channels list that has up to 394 channels for customers to choose from. Its DVR system has a lot of different options and although it is an additional monthly cost, it is very affordable and versatile to fit whatever a customer needs. RCN provides customers with a free mobile app for TV on the go, although the app is only rated three out of five stars. RCN is a great neighborhood and community-based cable company that strives to provide customers with excellent customer service and top of the line technology products.
