Modernize opened its doors in 2005 with a goal of providing the best resources for home upgrades. Unlike some other companies in the industry, Modernize gives homeowners the opportunity to compare pricing and service options from several pros in their city through a free quote tool. After clients submit a simple quote request form, two to four licensed and insured contractors will reach out to the client, providing a free, no obligation, customized quote.

Because Modernize works with a wide variety of contractors and other companies to provide new windows and other home improvement services, it has a wide variety of options that customers can choose from.

The Good

  • Many Options
  • Free Quote
  • Helpful Information

Many Options

Because Modernize works with a number of companies to provide and install the windows on its website, the company provides a huge selection of windows for its clients. The companies Modernize works with include the following:

  • Andersen
  • Lowe’s
  • Home Depot
  • Loewen
  • Ply Gem
  • Harvey
  • PGT
  • Milgard
  • Simonton
  • Marvin
  • Alside
  • SilverLine

Free Quote

On its website, Modernize provides an option for a free quote. This is rare to the industry because window projects are individualized to the home and the actual type of window a customer chooses.

However, customers should realize this free quote option is specifically for window repair, whether that be for the entire window, just the glass, or just the frame or hardware. Customers can view the cost of a window by selecting the entire window replacement option, but customers building their home should not be surprised when they use this tool and it only refers to window replacements.

Helpful Information

Because one of the company’s goals is to help homeowners understand the best way to upgrade their home, Modernize provides quality, educational content on its website. On the page about windows, Modernize provides extensive information about energy-efficient windows, window frames, window brands, and types of windows. Under energy efficient window, Modernize explains the pros and cons of double-paned windows, triple-pane windows, thermal pane windows, and energy star ratings.

Regarding window frames, Modernize gives the ins and outs on vinyl, aluminum, wood, and fiberglass frames. To help consumers understand brands, Modernize links to Andersen, Window World, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Loewen, Ply Gem, Harvey, PGT, and Milgard, among other brands. Finally, Modernize gives the break down for many types of windows:

  • Storm windows
  • Casement windows
  • Bay windows
  • Glass Block windows
  • Awning windows
  • Transom windows
  • Sliding windows
  • Hopper windows
  • Round windows
  • Arched windows
  • Skylight windows
  • Jalousie windows
  • Sing Hung windows
  • Double Hung windows
  • Egress windows
  • Picture windows
  • Garden windows

The Bad

  • No Warranty Information
  • Potential Website Confusion

No Warranty Information

While Modernize provides useful information on general window guidelines and pricing from different window providers, the company does not give any information on warranties. This is likely because Modernize does not provide the windows itself, but works through other companies to provide that service.

Potential Website Confusion

Modernize does an incredible job educating potential clients through the information on its website. However, some of this information could confuse individuals. One example is the free quote tool. The free quote tool is available for every company Modernize works with, but it is the only way to directly see prices through the company’s page, and these quotes are to replace windows. If home builders look at this tool, some could assume that the quote would not apply to them, even though it can.

Another potentially confusing aspect of Modernize’s site is the way that information is reused. When an individual selects a specific company to view, the new page provides a brief statement about that company, but then restates the same information on other pages explaining different types of windows.

The Bottom Line

Modernize is an amazing option for consumers looking to find more information on windows, whether they have questions about frames, window providers, types of windows, or energy-efficient windows. The free quote tool is also helpful to compare prices between companies.

However, the company does not provide information on warranties on its website. Interested consumers are encouraged to reach out to the company for more information.

I kind of got tricked into going with their service. It came up on the internet, I didn't know what I was clicking and without realizing it I signed up for it. The connection with Modernize.com was fine but I didn't like the installing company that came out at all. The installers made a racket in my house for 6 hours and I couldn't get them out. They kept saying they needed to do this or that before I could get a quote. Then they also signed me up for a credit card that I didn't know I was signing up for. On top of that I had to put down a deposit and later on they wanted me to pay another deposit even though my windows were not even up yet. I guess in the end it was my own fault, their bait worked and I fell for it. I cancelled everything but they never sent me my money back. Modernize.com really needs to check well on the companies they recommend because they're not really good. I would never use them again.

They were just what popped up first when I searched online. I don't know who they ended up sending me but they never asked me what type of window repair or replacement I was looking for or if there were any other companies I had used before that I didn't want to deal with anymore. I didn't want any real expensive windows or anything but they didn't even ask me. They just didn't listen to what I wanted.

I went looking online for someone that could help me with windows. I'm not impressed with them. They just gave me quotes for two of the higher priced people in my area. They had no independent contractors in there so I wasn't sold on it. When I called to know why I hadn't been given any quotes from independent contractors I got absolutely no response. I ended up contacting someone that I found on my own and they're going to install my windows on Friday.

Went to a retailer website and was redirected to Modernize. While they did have several retailers contact me, I had no control over who and contacts from both Modernize and retailers became almost constant

They were absolutely horrible. The three that actually scheduled to come two never showed up and the other wouldn't give me a price unless both husband and wife were on the premises.

The only problem is that after I reached out to them I get a thousand spam emails a day from tons of different types of companies that I never asked for.

Modernize’s advertising tactics are predatory and misleading. They trick you into disclosing your contact information under the guise of checking to see if you qualify for state funded window upgrades (something they do here in Colorado), but then sell your information to every other window company on the market. I have received 25 calls in the past 2 days by Modernize and their affiliates and while Modernize themselves have offered to remove me from their list, they’ve said there’s nothing they can do about the companies they’ve shared my information with (without my consent).

I asked for a window quote 3 or 4 months ago. Every month since, they say "call us when you're ready to start the project" but then call me literally once a month, every month... I have been very clear I was not ready to start the project until later this year, but still getting once-a-month calls to see if I'm ready to start! I just demanded my phone number be removed. I'll now be calling the direct service instead IF I even trust that- since they pay for this service (coughSearscough).

I found it after some website search. The thing is they do not service my area but they never made that known to me when I requested the service.
