Kirby's Moving & Storage
Is This Your Business?Author: Kaitlyn Short
Kirby’s Moving & Storage Company is a veteran-owned mover based in Urbandale, Iowa, handling residential and commercial moves for Des Moines and the surrounding metro. Its crews also take on long-distance and interstate jobs out of central Iowa, along with packing and junk removal.
A Kirby’s job usually starts with an estimate done in-house or over a video call, so the crew sizes the move before the truck arrives. Heavy and awkward items are a particular focus: the company moves gun safes and vaults with powered stair climbers and all-terrain dollies.

The Good
- Safe and Vault Moving
- Video Walkthrough Estimates
- Short-Notice Moves
- Homes and Businesses
Safe and Vault Moving
Kirby’s moves gun safes and vaults up and down stairs using stair-climbing equipment such as the Ultra Lift and StairCat, a job many general movers turn down.
Video Walkthrough Estimates
Customers can choose an in-house estimate or a video consultation, which lets the crew review the move without a home visit.
Short-Notice Moves
The company specifically offers last-minute moving help for customers whose timelines change unexpectedly.
Homes and Businesses
Residential, commercial, and labor-only moving help are all offered, along with packing supplies and junk removal for clearing out before a move.
The Bad
- Iowa-Centered Service Area
- Sunday Closures
Iowa-Centered Service Area
The service-area list centers on the Des Moines metro and nearby Iowa towns, so customers outside central Iowa should confirm coverage before booking.
Sunday Closures
The office keeps Monday-through-Saturday hours and lists Sunday as closed, which can limit weekend scheduling.
The Bottom Line
For Des Moines-area households and businesses with something heavy on the list, like a gun safe that has to go down to a basement, Kirby’s Moving & Storage Company has the equipment and the focus. It also suits moves that come up on short notice.
The simplest place to start is the estimate request on the company’s website. Mention any safes, stairs, or tight deadlines there so the crew can scope the job, either in person or over a video call.
