Cigna is a well-known and trusted health insurance company. Its industry experience makes it a good choice for health insurance and Medicare plans. Those eligible for Medicare have two options: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage. The Medicare program you choose will affect how you enroll and shop for Medicare coverage.

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) is managed by the federal government, though people can purchase Medicare supplemental insurance from private insurance carriers for additional help paying out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Prescription Drug plans (Part D) are private Medicare plans. Medicare Dual Special Needs plans are also available to those eligible for Medicare and Medicaid services.

As you evaluate Medicare plans, consider what each insurance carrier offers and each plan's network, coverage, and cost to fully understand the Medicare benefits offered.

Cigna offers Medicare Advantage, prescription drug, and Medigap plans. Its Medigap plans come with some nice perks, like Cigna Healthy Rewards ® and access to Cigna’s Health Information Line. Specific offerings vary by state, but Cigna makes it easy to see what’s available to you online.

The Good

  • Good Medicare Options
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan Perks
  • Medicare Plans Through Employers

Good Medicare Options

Cigna offers several Medicare plans: Medicare Advantage Plans, Part D, and Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap). It also offers Medicare plans that just cover medical services. Those who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid should contact the insurance carrier directly to see if Dual Special Needs plans are available. If not, you may have to consider other Medicare providers.

Cigna Medicare Advantage plans combine Part A, Part B, and offer some prescription drug coverage. These are a great option for people interested in reducing the number of monthly premium payments into one. For additional prescription drug coverage, you can also purchase Cigna Medicare Part D.

Cigna Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are renewable for life and supply additional coverage to enhance Medicare Part A and Part B plans by helping to pay for Medicare out-of-pocket expenses. Medicare Parts A and B are often called Original Medicare or Traditional Medicare. A Medigap policy also offers coverage throughout the United States when receiving care from doctors that accept Medicare.

Cigna has secure online payment methods for its plans.

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan Perks

Cigna’s Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plans come with some nice perks:

  • Discounts for households
  • Health Information Line
  • Cigna Healthy Rewards ®

When multiple members of the same household enroll in Cigna Medigap, it offers a discounted rate.

Cigna’s Health Information Line offers telephone access to a clinician around the clock. This line helps customers find quick answers to their health questions, understand symptoms they may be experiencing, and choose the best way to address them.

The Cigna Healthy Rewards ® program offers discounts on vitamins, alternative medicine, nutrition programs, and more. These additional discounts add value to the Medigap insurance plan.

Some Medigap plans also offer health insurance coverage for emergencies while traveling abroad. This is especially important for those who plan to travel.

Medicare Plans Through Employers

Cigna offers the following Medicare plans that employers can offer their employees and retirees:

  • Cigna-HealthSpring ® Medicare Advantage
  • Cigna-HealthSpring ® Rx

The Cigna Health-Spring ® Medicare Advantage plans can be either HMO or HMO-POS plans. These plans include coverage for hospital and medical services and prescription drugs.

The Cigna-HealthSpring ® Rx plans offer coverage for prescriptions

Cigna also offers two other plans designed to meet the needs of retirees. However, these plans are not offered under a federal contract.

  • Cigna Medicare Surround ®
  • Cigna Medicare Expand ®

Cigna Medicare Surround ® is similar to Medicare supplement insurance because it offers additional cost-sharing features that compliment Part A and Part B. It is an indemnity plan.

Cigna Medicare Expand ® plans are a secondary insurance option for individuals with Medicare.

These plans are designed to work with Medicare plans to enhance coverage.

In addition, Cigna offers drug subsidy support services and benefit administration services for retirees.

The Bad

  • Plan Specifics and Options Vary by State

Plan Specifics and Options Vary by State

For more specific information on Medicare policy options, benefits, premiums, deductible and out-of-pocket amounts, and other cost-sharing and coverage details, interested Medicare shoppers should consult Cigna’s site.

Cigna’s website makes it easy to see plan options available in your area and the specific details of each plan. While it is frustrating not to have general cost information available, this is common for the industry and Cigna makes it easy to see the options in your area.

The Bottom Line

Cigna is a great choice when looking for Medicare insurance coverage. While Cigna’s plans and perks vary by state, it does have a good selection of Medicare Advantage, prescription drug, and Medigap plans. Cigna's a great choice for those interested in Medicare supplement coverage. For more information on what’s available in your location, visit Cigna’s website.

We use Cigna for our health care. I do like some of there coverage however I don't like that they force us to use Cigna home pharmacy. I also don't like that they don't always want to cover what our doctor thinks is medically necessary.

I'll keep it brief. ONE CT scan costing me over $6000, and EVEN having "out of network" charges although I went to a provider IN-NETWORK. Worth your money? Absolutely not. I signed up through the marketplace. Mind you I've been with Anthem, Kaiser, and a few other companies through the Marketplace before Cigna. Being self-employed, I have to pay out of pocket. In 2019 I picked Cigna. Cigna took it upon themselves to label me a dependent to my husband and would NOT give me access to my children's medical information, ALTHOUGH my husband NEVER (and this is 100% accurate and not one iota of an exaggeration) enrolled us in a plan or managed any portion of our healthcare in the 8 years of our marriage. Cigna said it was a Marketplace issue... untrue. I called them to confirm. I also can validate that other providers through the marketplace have never labeled me a dependent and in-fact ensure I'm the primary since I manage our care.

Not happy that you had to send a copy of your bill from the doctor even though they approved it and had their own copy of our bill(s).. I think that was what kept me from liking them

One Star is too much! Not one of the worst but CIGNA Springs Medicare Advantage plan IS UNEQUIVOCAL THE WORST plan out there for Seniors. No less than 11 Appeals just to get basic care for a patient who suffered severe brain damage coupled to three subsequent strokes now a near vegetable. Primarily responsible by the constant declination of services by this company to continue with her care. Recently forcing her out of Acute Care and when going to sub Acute was declined by the facility as patient being too critical for sub Acute yet we had to Appeal their decesion and even then they are putting her out with no where to go other than to home to die. Care limited to profitability margins. Care is not the priority only the lure to kill. Stay the F away.

MYPolicyhq - Cigna is probably the worst Medicare ins company out there. They take forever to pay Part B claims. And when they do finally pay (2 months Later) he claims still do not show up on the website. A user has no way of checking on the status of claims. CIGNA you need to clean up your service.....

Cigna has been our supplemental insurance company with our Medicare for two years now. We have found the cost to be less than most of the other companies. I'm particularly impressed with the customer support and promptness in answering all my questions.
