How do I recover from identity theft?

It happens, and reacting quickly might be the most important thing to do when it does.

Follow these steps if you are a victim of identity theft: 

  • Inform the business where your information was misused about the fraudulent activity. Close these accounts.
  • File a police report.
  • Contact the three major credit reporting bureaus — TransUnion, Equifax and Experian — and consider putting a fraud alert on your credit. This ensures future creditors will take extra steps to verify your identity first.

I purchase life lock ultimate only after I had a problem. Someone had filed federal taxes under my social security number and gotten a refund. A couple of years ago, we had notice from the IRS that our refund was being withheld because certain information had not been submitted with the return. We had not even filed our return yet. We were identity thefted, specifically I was identity thefted - and with the IRS of all places! I immediately was referred to LifeLock by our accountant. Signed up and have been protected ever since. LifeLock intercepted two different account frauds attempting to open accounts in my name at either end of the US - one in Florida and one in California a few months later. They got on a conference call with me and the bank involved, cleared up the problems and my name was removed from the ficitious accounts. Now whenever I apply for a credit card or loan, almost instantly I get a notification from LifeLock saying to verify that it was me. I love LifeLock!

When trying to discuss this with you I was put on hold and then disconnected. I don't think you are able to protect us from such an identiy breach.

An account that has been protected since inception suddenly can't be protected and it will take 3 to 5 business days to make it available again. I had an investment account in my protected accounts since I opened my account. I received a notice that there was a connection error. I went to the investment account and was able to login with the same credentials supplied to LifeLock. I went back to LifeLock and noticed that the URL to login didn't match my login - not sure how that changed as I have had the same login for the investment account - that hasn't changed. I called and was informed that it would take 3 to 5 business days to add the account and that the customer rep was unable to contact the IT department directly - so now my investment account that was protected is no longer protected because "we are only able to submit a ticket". Not what I expect from a company that markets itself as such a protector of your financial well being. I understand protocols however it doesn't seem customer oriented to have to wait a week to get something fixed that appears to be a LifeLock issue.

Failed to catch identity theft when used my debit card at Targets and then again when it happened at Home Depot. The theft at Home Depot was unbelievable. Accessed my bank account and in less than 24 hrs had spent thousands but you sent me a "good new" email saying that all was well. Really?

Lifelock is a total waste of money. Someone got into our account and stole $900 from it. When we discovered the theft we called Lifelock and they told us it was not their problem, and to take care of it ourselves. We did, and we cancelled our account with Lifelock.

Lifelock is the best thing going for protecting you against identity theft. A couple of years back when I sold my home and moved evidently some of my information got away from me and someone tried to purchase a cell phone setting up an account in my name. Lifelock caught it immediately, notified me and stopped the criminal in his tracks. The only wish was that the criminal was prosecuted and thrown in jail where they belonged.

Today (04/23/2015) I received a "Monthly Security Update" for the first time in at least 9 months. In over a year, I have received direct Lifelock communications on various issues perhaps 6 to 8 times. My wife, also a "Plus" member, has had slightly more communication, but at irregular intervals. A typical bothersome occurrence was my receipt of an important alert that was directed to my wife, but sent to my e-mail address. She was never directly informed of the issue. Over the years,I have addressed these problems many times with Lifelock, always being told that systems were being improved and that the representatives were in agreement that there was a problem. My last two encounters occurred several months ago with Supervisors/Escalation Representatives who assured me they would review the entire process we were being subjected to and would get back to me. One of these representatives even suggested a specific time frame for his response. I have heard nothing from these gentlemen, or from anyone else, regarding our unsolved issues for many months. As a long-time executive at an effective major corporation, I am at a loss to explain the seeming ineptitude of an organization like Lifelock. I was recently a victim of identity theft with Lifelock ultimate fully in place (and billed monthly). My taxes were filed "for me" by a thief who pocketed a large refund both federal and state. When I called Lifelock, I was told "we don't cover tax fraud". Really?! You guys advertise like mad around tax time, motivating people that tax fraud is on the rise and they should be protected. That being said, I have not been contacted by any lifelike representative since I reported my problems.

I signed up for the ultimate plus service. After logging in and starting to input my information, I was asked for information on my spouse. Since we share all accounts, I entered her information. Nothing was ever stated that entering her information would double the cost of the service!!!!!!! Months later I happened to stumble onto this rip off. When I called, all I got was attitude. I was even told this was shown clearly in the receipt email I received after I signed up. After looking through my email, not finding anything, the account representative then informed me no receipt email was sent!!!!!!! The only service I received was a drain to my wallet from lifelock. I have terminated my account with Lifelock.

As a customer who is a Lifelock ultimate member, I expected quicker alerts. I would definitely give this a 5 star, but unfortunately when I am alerted, its usually 3 days or a week after I have made a transaction. The dates of the transactions do not match. For example I made a transaction on Friday the 10th. It should clearly show Friday 10th not the 17th. Its confusing to say the least. Or if there is suspicious activity of someone using my ss#, etc to try and open credit cards, the alert I am given should be on the same day....not days after the perp is attempting to succeed. I will hope that Lifelock will improve on its alert timing.

In the past, I would have given this company at least a '8' or above. Not anymore. A complete '0'. For the past several weeks (the last notice being on April 4) all notices of any activity on my account stopped coming in. The only assistance (if you want to call it that) I got from them was to delete all accounts and then re-enter them. What a complete waste of my time. Still no alerts. I think they might have been hacked because they still don't have any answers. I quickly cancelled my account and will never deal with this company again. Beware of this company.

Lifelock called me and asked me if I had made a large purchase out of my state that was an unusual purchase for me. It was very early one morning and on my cell phone. I was not at home and actually across my state taking care of my mother who was sick at the time! Boy was I thankful! I not only hadn't made the purchase but never heard of the place. I believe they are doing a very good job, but it is too difficult to get to talk to someone that can answer pointed questions. This is still a problem, even though I have asked to speak to someone or have them initiate a call back to me so that I can answer verifying questions before asking mine. My initial membership was through my bank which has stopped participating. The net result is that before I add my wife to the account, I have to get some answers or it will not happen. The thing i like about lifelock is that actual people are monitoring and their representatives actually call when they notice something that does not fit what i normally do. So would i recommend definite yes.

I don't know what you are doing for me. I see no activity on this website since April 2014!! Nothing is up-to-date as far as my financial activity. I've been a victim of tax fraud (for the last two tax filing years) and identify theft using my social security number and other personal information, which I reported to you. It's getting hard to justify this expense if I see no action.

The Life Lock organization is very valuable, several months ago, I received a call asking if I had requested a credit card application, and my response was no. Immediately, they blocked any transactions, and followed the information to the proper authorities. Each Credit bureau was notified.

My Wells Fargo acct was compromised three times in March.Someone cashed 3 bogus checks that I did not write. Wells Fargo put the money back into my business savings acct. and reimbursed the fees that were charged against my acct. Last year $6,000.00 dollars of bogus checks were written on the same acct. I was reimbursed everytime by Wells Fargo. Lifelock does not seem to be working for me. Someone also tried to access my Pay Pal acct from Venzuela, but they stopprd it.

am so glad to have you guys. You've been a life saver for me. I had at least 3 different identity thefts since I've been a lember in Nov or Dec. last year and you took care of it all without me having to do hardly anything at all. You are informative to what you do and usually polite on phone. The price of. 19.99 a month is really worth it. I I would like to get my paper shredder.from you though if I could please.

This is my 2nd year signing up for this service. It was mentioned to me by a co-worker as a new option for us. I like getting the messages and knowing someone is monitoring my records. There are times that I have spending spurts on my Citi card and I would think it would flag but maybe your organization can tell a valid transaction versus suspicious activity.

My wife and have used Life Lock about 5 yrs, we travel a lot and they have checked our travel to make sure it was us doing the traveling. This past year they stopped a business from opening an account using my SS. As it turned out my SS and their Fed Tax ID # were same, but when its written out there is - after the first 2 numbers.

LifeLock is a fantastic service. I purchased a portable generator, shortly after the transaction, I was contacted to determine if in fact I made the purchase. I feel comfortable that LifeLock is looking after my financial assets.

I have purchased 3 houses since I joined Lifelock. Lifelock's emails told me they had good news and that I had no activity during the periods of the loans being processed. Seems like a pretty worthless service. I am wondering how many other things have been purchased using my credentials that I am not aware of!

I am a physician and had recently been informed that someone had filed a fraudulent tax return in my name. I had noticed on another credit site that there was an alert for an identity validation for Green Dot, which is the company that a lot of these people use to get their fraudulent tax returns. I had noticed that I received no alert from LifeLock regarding this. When I called a representative to ask about this, the only answer that I could get was "we can't find everything." This wa a a less than satisfactory response to my question as to how Free Credit Report.com could get this and Lifelock couldn't. I would think for the amount of money we pay a month for this "protection" that someone either should have been aware of this alert, or at the very least given me a better explanation as to why this was missed. I am very dissatisfied with the response I was given and the overall uncaring attitude that the representative had to my concerns about this serious fraud which is very concerning to me.

Lifelock has been a godsend to me and my husband who are both senior citizens. We are not scared to use our credit card anymore knowing that LIfelock is on the job. They have called us immediately whenever we open a new account or buy a large item to see if it was us. It is worth every penny. Thank you Lifelock.

It didn't work, and I wrote to them several times, and here's what I finally was told even after asking if there was a service I could PAY for. If I have to do it myself, then why click on their link? Here is their reply: Unfortunately, we're not able to assist in the opt out process. If the company has additional criteria that must be met, you would need to follow this in order to complete the opt out. If you're having trouble with a particular site, please attempt to contact them directly to request this removal.
