Maytag, a subsidiary of Whirlpool Corporation, started in 1907 after Frederick Maytag joined the home appliance industry, selling his first hand-crank home washing machine. Maytag HVAC sells air conditioners, air handlers, furnaces, heat pumps, and packaged systems. The Maytag website maintains that its products and services exemplify the “dependability and reliability you expect from an appliance wearing a Maytag badge.”

The Good

  • Warranty
  • Experience
  • Financing Available
  • Contractor Locator
  • Quality Control Process

Warranty

Maytag offers a 12-year limited parts warranty on every new Maytag model product. The company also makes a Dependability Promise for each of its appliances. This promise varies in length depending on the exact product, but means that Maytag will replace your appliance if it fails within a certain period of time.

Experience

Though it is unclear when Maytag began offering heating and cooling service, the company itself has been around since 1907. Though its experience is rooted in home appliances, Maytag likely has learned much about the HVAC industry in its long years of supplying consumers' homes.

Financing Available

Depending on the contractor from whom a customer obtains their Maytag appliance, they may have several financing options. Maytag contractors may offer fixed interest rate loans for U.S. customers through Renovate America Benji Program or FTL Finance, or loans with competitive interest rates and zero-interest options for Canadian customers through EcoHome Financial.

Contractor Locator

Through the Maytag website, customers can find bonded Maytag technicians to service their appliances. These technicians offer 24/7 service and can offer help with installation, servicing, and repair, with satisfaction guaranteed.

Quality Control Process

Nortek Global HVAC manufactures Maytag HVAC appliances. Nortek Global HVAC has been in business since 1919 and has a strict quality control process that requires every unit of the appliance be checked and re-checked at every stage of the process. According to the websites, the process mandates checking each split-system air conditioner and heat pump 144 times, each gas furnace 234 times, and each packaged unit 72 times before they leave the factory.

The Bad

  • Undisclosed Information
  • Difficult Website
  • Customer Service

Undisclosed Information

Not only is the website more difficult to navigate than other companies’ websites in the industry, there is very little information about when the company actually began offering heating and cooling services. Since Maytag has been around for over 100 years, it may have only recently started offering heating and cooling services. Additionally, Maytag does not disclose specific information about pricing or additional fees; it only lists dollar signs indicating the relative expense of its products.

Difficult Website

The Maytag Heating & Cooling website, though it does contain a good deal of product information, has some issues. Although Maytag has a big brand name, some links on its website do not work, including links to brochures with more information on its products.

Customer Service

Because the Maytag Heating & Cooling website is separate from the main Maytag brand website, there are no guarantees about customer service beyond what is posted. The website does have a “Contact Us” section where customers can fill out a form and submit a complaint/request, but there is no indication of when you will get a response.

The Bottom Line

Customers who are satisfied by past experiences with Maytag may be more inclined to trust its heating and cooling services. The Maytag Heating & Cooling website does not evoke the feeling of industry experience that one might expect. However, the company has more than 100 years of home appliance experience. Furthermore, Maytag’s manufacturer employs a strict quality control process that, coupled with Maytag’s 12-year warranty, should help customers feel more confident in its products.

More transparent product information, including the ability to access links to product brochures and more specific pricing information, would make it easier to recommend Maytag HVAC.

In the meantime, we recommend that interested customers proceed with caution and that uninterested customers consider other, more transparent HVAC companies.

I have a maytag furance that is 6-7 years that the heat exchanger is bad and leaking carbon is leaking carbon monoxide. I've called customer service and emailed them and know one has returned my calls or email. According to my service tech this is a common problem.

I have had the opportunity to use a few different HVAC companies over the years. The explored using a Maytag. I guess I kind of fell for the marketing. The unit I had, failed after about 7 years… I now will not consider using Maytag because of that experience
