Trade Service Call Fee Options

Home Warranty of America lets you choose between two service call fee options for its warranty plans: $100 for a lower monthly/yearly cost, or $75 for a higher monthly/yearly cost. This gives customers the option to decide if they would prefer a cheaper service call fee or a cheaper monthly/yearly home warranty contract.

GreenPlus Option

Home Warranty of America is a member of Ethical Directory and United States Green Products. With that being said, the company offers a service known as GreenPlus for an additional fee. For $5.77/month, the GreenPlus add-on covers appliances that need to be replaced with Energy Star-qualified products, including the dishwasher, refrigerator, clothes washer, and others.

Online Claims

HWA offers an online claim process when you sign in with your account information on its website. This makes it easy for customers to submit a claim to repair or replace a household appliance whenever they desire, no matter what day or time it is.

No Inspection Required

Home Warranty of America does not require an appliance inspection to receive warranty coverage. There is no age restriction on any covered appliances, regardless of any normal wear and tear. This can give homeowners peace of mind that they do not have to go through a lengthy process before setting up warranty coverage with HWA.

The Bottom Line

On the surface, Home Warranty of America seems like a solid company. Basic warranty plans offer extensive coverage on over twenty appliances and systems throughout the home. The company has affordable home warranties for a variety of people, including homeowners, real estate professionals, and buyers/sellers. However, there are Home Warranty of America reviews that detail poor customer service, and the company requires a one-year contract. Today when I called them, the nationality of the guy that spoke to, I could hardly understand him, he knows English, his accent was so strong. I just couldn't hear everything he said, and that's not uncommon. It does seem like they have some technicalities that are deceptive. For example, I had a water heater replaced, and the guy gave me a quote and everything was fine. And they said they'd cover this much. And I go, "Why are you not paying 400 and some dollars?" They said "Because of the pan and the other thing. " It was the pan for the water heater and the two types are like $30. And you replace, to get take them apart and replace them anyway. So basically, they had a technicality written into their contract that allowed them to charge 400 and some dollars for $25 worth of work or product. And it's just a way, a deceptive dishonest way of not paying for the water heater. Then they did the same thing on my furnace.

It was really just sort of a series of an unfortunate event, but we called in two or three things. Over a period of time, it was just misunderstandings, but they had a feeling thing I needed replacing. It was the heater in the bathroom with the exhaust fan. And so in trying to get that sorted out, my sister got sick and died and I just couldn't call him back or go online or do any of the things that I should have been to follow up. But, then they just closed the claim and that was frustrating. We paid somebody $85 to come and look at it and I just started over. Part of it was my fault, but part of it was their fault as well. They do send people to come and fix things and so far, although one of them has been capable and done a good job and you know, so I still don't have a heater in the bathroom, but I think someone's working on it. So we'll see how that comes out. It seems like they have a little bit of trouble communicating, but I have a 3-year agreement with them, which I can cancel at any time, and I don't plan to cancel it.

When we call them they've been very responsive to us, gotten back to us pretty quickly. We had an issue with our toilet, basically smelling. We first bought the house, we called them up to see what was going on with it. And they sent a tech out within about 2 days. They sent us the information about the tech, and then they came out in a couple of days and then fixed the toilet up pretty quickly. So I'm pretty impressed with that.

I mean, a lot of the time the people, they don't seem to understand exactly. You can't understand hardly what they're saying. So sometimes it makes it a little difficult to it's for them to understand what you're trying to say and what you're trying to do. I know a lot of companies are using overseas or other countries for service, and that's what they do. And just so that you feel, you need to speak to somebody who can understand what you're saying, and you can understand what they're saying. I needed to use my warranty for my furnace, last month. And you have to wait until they find a contractor to take the claim. But I asked them why would have someone new come out who knows nothing about this furnace? Why wouldn't you have the person who installed the furnace come out? They said they don't do that. That they should be able to have you use the same people, so you don't have all these different people coming working on your products.

My furnace heater was broken. I think the timeframe is about the final technician come back fix, I'll say like one week to two. It's a little bit longer than I expected, but now it's not like not able to accept at all. The timeframe it's a little bit longer, but I like the service.

They were very customer oriented and they helped me with the solutions and scheduled the repair on time. And all the communication was very good, too. My water heater was not working and I didn't know what the problem was. So the technician came and he checked, and he was able to find what the problem was. It was the clip, the overload, he reset it, and then I started getting water.

GREAT SERVICE IN PROVIDING VENDORS FOR SPECIFIC REPAIRS...EXCEPT "SEARS REPAIRS "...which does not confer with the client as far as date and time for repairs. Sear s gives a particular date (2-3 weeks later) AND expects someone to be at the repair location from 7:00AM-6:00PM AND WAIT FOR A CALL TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHEN THE TECH IS TO ARRIVE---totally UNREASONABLE!

The customer service was great, except, they tried to push the whole 80 key insurance, I mean, the 80 key home security and it's just like they're being very persistent. And it kind of got annoying. I needed to do the routine on the thing, it says free routine but I still got charged the cost. But even said when they put it through that we'd have to pay the $75, but on their their initial paperwork, they put it free routine.

We were getting a new water heater recently, and we had a lot of trouble. We did get in touch with the company and the warranty company did order it, but they didn't get in contact with the plumbers and we waited about 2 weeks to get that water heater in. The company they sent, the plumbers, we like them a lot. I just don't know what happened over those 2 weeks, but it was it seemed like it was too long.

It sometimes takes too long for them to actually get somebody out here for repair, by going through due process and scheduling a visit. The most recent one was that we were having a problem with our furnace in the attic of our home. The technician came out, identified the problem, and ordered the part. Another technician came by in a few days and replaced the part of the circuit board and the furnace. We've actually used them quite a bit for various systems in the house and a pool, so it's all been pretty positive.

So he did come and he took care of it right away. I believe I'll recommend the Home Warranty to my friends or relatives if they need it. I really like the way they deal with the customers and the support they have.

I had a furnace that was 15+ years old, and I was just having a routine service and we found out it was in bad shape. So at that point, I actually opened the claim they provided a technician. They opened the claim that I requested quickly, and then the turnaround to get somebody out to actually investigate the problem was within a day or two. They confirmed what the servicing company identified and they were quick and responsive.

They got to the job right away. The person that came out was very, very nice, very knowledgeable, and he gets the job done. Our dishwasher wasn't emptying, and the guy came out and told us to try something, like a thorough cleaning, and then we had to call him out again. When he came out we had done the thorough cleaning, but it still would have a little bit of water, but then he was able to fix it.

Very quick response time, quick scheduling time, and the professional was great. My garbage disposal was not functioning. I put the recall in the very next day I received an email with the scheduled technician for a couple of days later. The scheduled technician came in. He looked at it real quick. He knew it needed to be replaced. He went out, called, got the approval, and had the replacement unit in his truck. He came in, fixed it, and that was the end of that. Everything was just very fast. I thought it was all fabulous.

I like their professionalism. When I first moved to my home, our water tank went out, they came out and observe and found out that I needed a brand new water tank, which they replaced. I just recently used them about a week ago for my garbage disposal that had worn out. So they came and replaced it. The only problem I have is when you talk to a representative, it's hard to understand because they have broken English. That's the only negative thing that they have, outside of that they are exceptionally well.

The last repair I had done on my oven was good. The technician was friendly and professional. Appointment for diagnosing the problem was done within a week. Parts were ordered and the repair was done 2 weeks later. However, the claim I submitted before this one, where I had a leak under my kitchen sink was horrible!! It took over 6 weeks just to assign the claim. A week or so later an appointment was set up to diagnose the problem. The technician was supposed to show up between 8 am and 3 pm. He showed up at 5 pm. No "I'm sorry I'm late," nothing. I needed a new faucet. He said he could come back the next day at noon. I went out and bought a faucet. He never showed up the next day. Never called. Nothing. He showed up the following day at 6 pm. I told him to leave, we were canceling his service. I called HWA and told them to assign me another technician. Took awhile to get another plumber scheduled. I did finally get the new faucet put in. I had been using a bucket under my sink for 3 months.

I don’t like when representatives don’t communicate well beyond a script. It disrupts efficiency, wasting time and money. I don’t like that, I as the paying customer, must pay extra service fees, and take extra time from work/life to accommodate when some technicians don’t do a good job. I pay home warranty for a service, if I’m not the one who gets to select the technician, then the warranty company should work to make me satisfied when something has gone wrong…

Your customer support that I spoke with yesterday was argumentative, failed to listen to the logic I was trying to present and did not resolve the issue. It was very recent and it just happened over the last week. I tried to use my warranty to repair or replace a hot water dispenser on my kitchen sink in a house I just bought, I have a warranty that came with the house, tried to use it to repair this appliance since it was not working. And the plumber that came to fix it said he needs to get approval from you folks, in order to move forward to make the repair. The next thing I heard was from Home Warranty saying "We're sorry, but your unit was installed improperly, and because it was installed improperly, we are not going to honor your claim." I called the plumber who was here and asked him if he told Home Warranty that this was improperly installed and he said, no, he didn't tell you folks that nor did he think it was improperly installed. I tried to present that argument to the customer service representative. He simply kept repeating the same response, which was that your experts determined from photographs that it was improperly installed and therefore would not honor the claim. I'm not likely to recommend you folks at all unless we can resolve this.

The worker was very good, it just took a long time to get the people out here to do the work. I understand that's because there was a big weather event and there were lots of customers, but I didn't have running water for 17 days. I have used it several times and have always had very efficient, competent, pleasant, and polite folks to come and do the work. At first I thought that HWA was a good thing and that they were really interested in the well being of my house appliances and such. From day one there was communication, contractor and scheduling issues. I'm not a person who believes in just good enough when fixing or repairing something. I also know how things work, where to get parts and how to fix things too. One of the most annoying things is the price of coverage going up each year with the benefits decreasing. The renewal persuasion, sweet talking and slight strong arming to make me renew each year was pretty comical. I'm glad my policy is lapsing at the end of March and I won't have to deal with lack of customer service knowledge, waiting days to get a service scheduled and questionable repair jobs that I have had to correct myself. Unless you have some major stuff you know is going to go wrong in your house or you have no knowledge of how to fix things then maybe HWA is for you. Just be prepared to wait, be frustrated and have to be on your toes with all the subcontractors and questionable ethics.

The woman that I dealt with, though I didn't get the answers that I was looking for, was very professional and very informative. She did her best. The last 2 times I've had to use it, my refrigerator that went out and the dishwasher went out. I would have certainly been appreciative if we would have gotten anywhere close to the value of these appliances. The money they offered was 30% of what it cost us to replace these items. So I'm looking for a home warranty when this thing expires, I did buy it for 3 years. I'll be looking for somebody who gives me more of a replacement value than just 30% of the value of the replacement product.

I don't get any real answers when I ask questions. I just get whatever is printed on the website, no details. I just recently had to file a claim for my washing machine. A service guy came out and he said it costs too much to repair so then I gotta buy out. But Home Warranty doesn't explain two things. One, they don't explain why they came up with the value they did, because it's not enough to pay for a new washing machine. And then two, they can't really explain to me why I have to wait up to 30 days to receive the payout when I need a washing machine now. So now I am out of a washing machine for a couple of weeks until I get the payout, and I still have to pay extra, so it almost doesn't make it worth it to use Home Warranty.

They have a very spotty record on whether or not things are covered. I recently had an issue with the surge protector that my entire house has. It's basically there to cover ALL appliances in the house without having a surge protector at the outlet level. Well, mine is spent, and I talked to them about replacing it. They denied it, and that makes NO SENSE. This is PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE... waaaaay cheaper than replacing a fridge or dryer or anything like that. I'd say the rate of them covering something breaking is about 50-50... and often you'll learn that they won't cover something AFTER you've shelled out a hundred bucks for the service call.

Very easy to file a claim, which was handled quickly and to my complete satisfaction. I would maybe like to be able to confirm appointment times, but that's on me, since they give you the option of booking your own person as long as they're licensed and insured, so I could have done that. The whole repair took less time than I thought it would, and with no headache. Highly recommend!

As first time home owners this service has been enormously helpful in finding reputable vendors and efficient vendors for fixes. It has easily paid itself off in the first year. I will note that scheduling communication vary - but we work from home so this has been easy to accommodate (they usually just assign a date and time). I could see this being harder to navigate for those who physically commute to work.

Several years ago, the cooling system upstairs , the cooling system for the upstairs, a man that I guess you know you all called on to come out here and take care of it. He was just impossible. It had nothing to do with home warranty. I think you all probably discharged him. But on a positive note, gosh, we we've had technicians out here, one time our freezer wasn't working properly. We couldn't get water or ice out of the dispenser or anything. And the nicest gentleman, this has been several years ago. I think he's done some other work, he replaced the microwave and oh gosh, it seems like he, he worked on the refrigerator a couple of times. But very polite, very efficient, you know, it just went like a breeze. And this last guy that came out about our downstairs unit, he is so respectful and he's not afraid of my barking dog and he's efficient. He tells you what time he'll be on site and he is, he's just really great.

It's been over 6 days, and we still do not have a technician out at our house. They are not able to locate a vendor or a technician that can come to our home. So we have offered the name of a company that's out of network with the name, the phone number, and the name of the technician and Home Warranty has declined. So we still do not have a technician at our house after 6 days. They say that the current policy only allows you to use one out-of-network vendor every 12 months. We've already done that once, but yet they still cannot provide us with a vendor after 6 days.

I’ve had a broken washer for a month and instead of just replacing it, Home Warranty of America spent triple the money of a new washer just for this washer to continue being broke after every time it’s “repaired”. Horrible experience so far and sick of being dragged along this long without being able to do our laundry in our home. The poor repair guys are telling me it’s not fixable but refusing to tell that to Home Warranty of America because then Home Warranty of America will refuse to pay them and obviously they want to get paid. So here we are just stuck in the middle unable to wash our clothes.

Any time that I complain about the people not showing up when they're supposed to, they fix the problem. I used it for plumbing. They came out, they took my money $75. They never called me back to fix the problem. Two weeks later, I waited to give them to be patient, I called Home Warranty, and they said "We are so sorry, we're gonna send somebody out and you're not going to have to pay the $75." And so they sent somebody out and they fixed it immediately. That's excellent.

I’ve paid HWA for years before using Them for a claim. This past warranty was for my washer and dryer. The washer has a broken wash tub. HWA won’t cover it. They covered the dryer so far but the appliance company has to come back yet. I hope it doesn’t have another part that HWA won’t pay for. The only other repair that i put a claim in for was for my 50+ year old electric stove that had multiple issues. The repairman said that he asked HWA to replace the stove. HWA refused. I still have a back burner that had collapsed. HWA refused to repair so I still cannot use that. I wish I could recommend HWA. At least their repair people are decent

The last time I used it, we got service from someone very, very quickly, and it was done very quickly. We had only one bad experience, and that was a faucet, trying to get a plumber out here. It took after 2 to 3 weeks of trying to get them to send somebody, I had my son-in-law do it.

I used it last year for an air conditioner system and took them like two months or over a month and a half to get a technician here. But I've never had that problem before, you respond within a few days.

I've already claimed the three of them. They were pretty easy to get in contact with, but sometimes the person they sent out cancelled. I tried to file for a new furnace, but they denied that. I guess they didn't see the problem

We have a gas leak in our air conditioner and heater. And we got them to come out and evaluate it. We got hooked up with a repair person. They came out, they took care of it, resolved it quickly, no problem.

My furnace was giving me problems and I called them and they came. They set up an appointment really fast. I've only had to call you guys in two instances, and both were good, so I've never had problems.
