MailChimp was founded in 2001 as a side project and has grown into an industry giant offering a complete suite of tool designed to help anyone create stunning and dynamic email marketing campaigns with fully trackable features at prices which are not only competitive, but beat the competition in most cases.

The Good

  • Resources
  • Free trial
MailChimp offers many options for their users and includes a comprehensive on-site Knowledge-Base with articles and tutorials on each of MailChimp's features. Short videos are included in the tutorials for those who want a more visual approach. MailChimp has a good pricing structure and is very transparent in what their plans include as far as features and the limits of subscribers, emails, etc. There are a few holes in the coverage which could not be found online, nor by contacting customer service. With the Forever Free plan, many small businesses can access tools which are easy to use and available only for a monthly subscription elsewhere. MailChimp offers both a free trial of and a 30-day money back guarantee for its services. Users will also be treated to an unlimited image hosting capacity, meaning they can upload as many of their own images as they desire.

The Bad

  • Customer support
  • No mobile-friendly templates
As mentioned above, our review team found that nearly every question which they had was easily answered by website research. The customer service interactions and requests for more information were lacking with agents that gave nebulous answers or did not respond at all (email requests for information went unanswered for 3+ days). In addition to the lack of phone support, MailChimp offers no mobile-friendly email templates. For a company that has been in business since 2000, one would think MailChimp would be aware of these issues and work hard to resolve them.

The Bottom Line

In spite of the issues with customer service, our team fully recommends using MailChimp as an email marketing program for most small business customers. The Knowledge-Base is extremely complete and answers nearly every question possible. Those users having email lists with more than 2,000 subscribers and less than 80,000 subscribers are in the area of information of which our review team could not receive adequate information and as such, MailChimp may not be as good an option for you until this information is discovered, either by subsequent research by our team or by discovering the information with further research by prospective clients.

Mail chimp remains hard to use, in my opinion. It’s not super intuitive on the back end, although it is fairly simple to get an email out to your business easily. I spend too much time organizing and reorganizing groups and contacts within those groups only to move them around again. I’ve never had to interact with customer service but also wonder what they’d be able to do besides tech support. I keep mail chimp because I’ve always had it but find myself using it less and less as other programs give more ease and flexibility

I used Mailchip for several years for emailing my various lists. Service is easy to use and you can create some beautiful emails quickly. Issue is that they kept raising their prices without an increase in services. Finally I left them for a less expensive service that does the same thing. They do offer landing pages and other tools that other email services don't provide so might be worth it if you need more than email.

This is a good service for mass mailing, but when I found they were charging me for the amount of contacts I had uploaded rather than the amount of emails that are sent I discontinued my service.

It was a good experience with their product and they handle many or the details especially with social. The price was a little high but overall worth the effort.

Mail chimp is not very customer friendly. There are a lot of steps and if you haven’t had training or can be a very overwhelming process

The most difficult thing for me has been the format of MailChimp's emails. I do not know why it is different, but it is not visually appealing.
