Stream Energy built its business in 2005 by selling energy via word of mouth. In just over a decade, Stream Energy has become one of the largest direct selling energy companies in the world, claiming to have paid millions of dollars to customers who have successfully referred Stream's services to their friends and family. Stream Energy appears to be one of the most transparent direct energy sellers in the industry and employs both competitive rates and flexible contract terms; however, the company also charges higher-than-average fees, and only serves a few select states. Stream Energy may be a good option for those who want to avoid getting locked into a long-term contract.

Competitive Rates

Among all deregulated energy companies, Stream Energy boasts some of the most competitive and transparent rates in the industry. The company's full disclosure of its fixed and variable rates for electricity and gas is rare for this industry:

  • Electricity (fixed rate): 7.8¢/kWh-below industry average
  • Electricity (variable rate): 10.2¢/kWh-about industry average
  • Natural gas (fixed rate): 4.42¢/kWh-below industry average
  • Natural gas (variable rate): 4.23¢/kWh-about industry average

Something else we like about Stream Energy is that its rates don't fluctuate with the seasons, meaning what you see is what you get - regardless of the time of year. Stream Energy also does not appear to charge customers a monthly customer service fee (this is at least true in many of the company's service areas); rather, it seems that customers only pay for the energy they use.

Flexible Contract Terms

Stream Energy offers a number of different contract lengths that cater to the needs of individual customers. For example, for customers who are apprehensive toward long-term contracts, the company provides a month-to-month rate plan at a slightly higher rate, but with no early cancellation fee. Stream Energy also provides longer-term contracts between six and 30 months (all at reduced rates).

Multiple Payment Options

Stream Energy allows customers to pay their energy bill through multiple channels: customers can pay by mailed check, electronic check, credit or debit card, or by connecting their bank accounts directly to their customer account with Stream Energy.

High Fees

While Stream Energy charges rates that are either around or below industry averages, it conversely charges fees that are well above what other companies charge. For example, some of its long-term plans come with an early termination fee, which ranges from $150 (in Maryland and New Jersey) to $250 (in Texas). Additionally, the company charges a minimum usage fee of $9.95 during billing months in which customers use 999 kWh or less. Other companies charge much less for minimum usage. Finally, Stream Energy charges a 5 percent late payment fee-one of the highest rates in the industry. Several deregulated energy companies will charge no more than 1.5 percent for late payments.

Some Fees Not Disclosed

While Stream Energy remains one of the most transparent deregulated energy companies in terms of its rates, the amount the company requires upfront as a deposit is undisclosed. Some companies have no deposit requirements, while others can charge over $300 for an initial deposit. Customers interested in buying electricity or natural gas through Stream Energy will need to inquire directly as to whether or not the company requires a deposit.

The Bottom Line

Customers living in Stream Energy's service area (DC, GA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, and TX), will have access to affordable rates for both electricity and natural gas. Customers who don't want to sign up for long-term contracts will also enjoy Stream Energy's month-to-month plan. That being said, some of Stream Energy's rates are higher than those of many companies, and the deposit amount is unknown. If you don't intend to cancel your contract early or make your payments late, Stream Energy could be the right energy provider for you.

Over the past decade and multiple energy providers I've realized a few things; there is no perfect energy company out there, someone somewhere is always going to mess things up a bit and give you a headache. That said, I'm definitely staying with Stream Energy now that I've had their service for just over 18 months. Even when there are hassles, at least these guys and direct and honest with you, and their reps get STRAIGHT to the point. There is no beating around the bush. This is a huge deal when you have a load of things on your shoulders, and when most other business do all sorts of things instead of just being straightforward. This is my way of showing thanks and respect for Stream for being one of those few who are human! thank you!

What worried us the most was changing locations and having energy service back up ASAP, and by our luck we had no clue if we're going to have to move and on top of that it all happened when our business was thriving and we were receiving orders left and right. We had 48-72 hours from the moment we knew we're moving our business to the new location and we were direct with Stream and let them know about this in advance. Needless to say everything went smoothly (which I did not expect, knowing and reading other people's experiences online with energy providers) and I'm very happy to post this here!!!

Nothing but superior performance from this company. I have been a customer for two years now. I am a stickler for professionalism as well as service. Stream delivers both expectations in my opinion. I have several misleading posts, and I want clarify. Stream is not a electric company or incumbent. Which means they DO not turn off your electric or turn it on. Only the incumbent can control such actions. Their customer service is very patient and courteous to answer any questions arrived while speaking. If you burn 500kwh one month then 900 the next, younshould know your bill will increase. Can not blame a supplier that simply reduce your rate per usage. And YOU ABUSE your kwh usage.

Stream has been a great resource for my family because literally EVERYONE uses mobile data and calls ALL the time, incl. calls to both Canada AND Mexico, we're all HUGE mobile freaks! Me and my husband have three kids and all of their families and THEIR KIDS use calling and mobile on a daily, no, hourly basis. Stream has been a great resource here because their mobile plans are easy to understand and the rates are reasonable to say the least. What's more their unlimited calling to Canada is amazing in our situation and we definitely get our value's worth! Also gotta say their customer service reps know what they're doing!

These days it's become normal that you sign up with some service and then hope everything goes right and you still continue worrying about your business like you did before. To describe and rate Stream Energy, I'd say they do a great job at showing what a pro business does for their clients. When it's clear you're dealing with professionals, you can afford to relax a little bit, and this gives you room to improve your business and expand. This is why I'm sticking with Stream. Been having a positive experience so far with this company. We use both their home and commercial energy (gas) services. We've been getting along so far, there weren't any issues, outages, billing issues, or any hassles. They're also super-easy to talk to on the phone. First month in I was giving the contract an another read and I was pondering about a clause and called in to check, and to my surprise, the phone call ended within 3 minutes because the support rep was very insightful was able to provide every answer I needed within that time. Was surprised. Very professional!

We've had energy contracts with several energy companies since the early 2000s, the most recent provider being Stream Energy. All of these companies had both their own drawbacks but benefits as well. Stream is simply a company that offers more of the latter. Reputable image, solid, reliable service, and decent rates. Plan on sticking with Stream for now!

We've been dealing with multiple energy providers the past 13 years and I've got to say that hands down Stream Energy is the only provider that managed to provide a stable service over the course of 3 or more years. Every now and then there's an issue you have to deal with which, in most cases, is handled by a single phone call, but that's absolutely nothing compared to what we've paid before and how we've been treated. In summary, I'll dare say this: If we knew things will stay the same, I'd sign a contract a 20-year contract with Stream right now!

Their customer service could be more concise on the phone but they do really try and help with any issues you may have. We've been using their energy services for exactly 4 years now and I had to phone them perhaps five or six times, and most of this was this year because we were looking to change a few things. Generally we didn't have any issues with the energy service and that's what really matters. Definitely plan on staying with Stream. Thanks!

I really don't know about other people's experience all I can say that I've had constant energy service from Stream with ZERO issues in almost 2 years...Dallas, TX. Their rates are decent, very worth the service and their customer support. Maybe the rates are different in other states so people are unhappy, idk, but my experience is more than good!

Just got off the phone with Stream's customer service and I had to come on here right away. It's amazing to me how such a LARGE company can act so nicely to the small man. I'm nothing to them, a single customers, out of thousands they probably have, and yet they act so graciously towards you and make sure your needs are being met. Not much of these kinds of companies/leadership exists! Their energy services are unprecedented!

For gas and electric, absolutely no risk to switch, no cost, and a savings! It's a no brainer. For mobile, their costs and coverage and service are excellent. Stream turned out to be the most logical choice economically, and I'll also say their support reps and managers are more in-tune with your account than other providers we dealt with. They're huge but you get surprised how in-tune they are with your company.
