The Good

  • Low Rates
  • No Annual Fees
  • Rewards Visa Card Available
  • Verified by Visa Protection

Low Rates

One of the biggest benefits in holding a Visa by Mountain America Credit Union is that the initial APR is much lower than those for many of its competitors.

  • Visa Low Rate Card: Variable rate as low as 7.99%
  • Visa Rewards Card: Variable rate as low as 8.99%
  • Visa Cash Back Card: Variable rate as low as 12.49%

To qualify for Mountain America's lowest rates, you should have an excellent credit score.

No Annual Fees

All three of Mountain America's Visa credit cards have no annual fee. An annual fee is often indicative of generous rewards, and so if you are looking specifically for a rewards credit card, you may want to look into other credit card issuer options. But, if you are looking for a credit card to use on everyday purchases, a MACU credit card may be a good option for you.

Rewards Visa Card Available

One of the most popular perks of a credit card is the ability to earn points, etc. that are redeemable for rewards, cash back, merchandise, etc. Mountain America Credit Union offers its customers an option for a rewards card with its Mountain American Visa Rewards card. Those using this card earn points based on their purchases - one point for every dollar spent.

Points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, such as gift cards from popular merchants, restaurants, etc., travel (hotel accommodations, car rentals, cruises, airfare, and vacation packages without blackout dates), tickets to cultural or sporting events, experiences, or even for cash back.

Verified by Visa Protection

All cards issued by Mountain America Credit Union are automatically protected with Verified by Visa, giving cardholders an additional layer of protection for online purchases. When making a purchase from participating online stores, customers are prompted to enter their password before the purchase is completed.

The Bad

  • Additional Fees
  • No Free Credit Monitoring
  • Limited Membership Eligibility

Additional Fees

Although Mountain America Credit Union does not have an annual fee or balance transfer fee on any of its credit cards, there are some other fees to be aware of. There is a late fee up to $25 if you miss your monthly payment, and a foreign transaction fee of 1% of the transaction amount. These fees are standard in the industry.

No Free Credit Monitoring

Many of the larger credit card providers offer their cardholders some form of limited credit report monitoring as part of their package. Most of the cards offered by credit unions do not include this benefit. While the lack of such a program is not usually enough to dissuade potential cardholders from applying for a credit card from Mountain America Credit Union, it is a nice added benefit to help cardholders track their financial health, especially if they are trying to build credit through the use of a credit card.

Limited Membership Eligibility

There are several limitations to membership eligibility for Mountain America Credit Union to consider for those interested in becoming a member of the credit union. Eligible parties must either be an employee or volunteer of a Select Employee Group, or SEG, or one of its affiliated organizations or live at the same address as an existing member of Mountain America Credit Union.

Additionally, prospective members may be eligible to join the credit union if they are residents of Salt Lake, Duchesne, and parts of Wasatch or Uintah Counties in Utah. Those living in Wasatch or Uintah counties must live within certain census districts, 940300 for Wasatch and 940100 or 940200 in Uintah County. Verifying eligibility based on one's census district can be completed online or at any Mountain America Credit Union branch location. This residence restriction excludes a significant number of individuals in the state of Utah from being members of the credit union.

The Bottom Line

Mountain America Credit Union offers its customers a history of stability, with nearly three-quarters of a decade of reliable service. The credit union offers its members three credit card options, allowing members to choose the best credit card for their needs.

Compared to other credit unions, Mountain America Credit Union offers competitive rates as lows as 7.99 percent. Although the rate you will get is dependent upon your credit score and credit worthiness, you can rest assured that you will be getting a competitively low rate in the industry.

Mountain America Credit union credit card reviews are currently limited, but of those reviews, the majority of customers give MACU four or five stars, highlighting great customer service and great rates that save them money.

If you have a MACU credit card please tell us about your experience by leaving a review.
