US Cellular is a regional cellphone carrier with the fifth-largest wireless cellphone and data network in the United States, behind Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The provider has over 4 million customers in 426 markets in twenty-six states. When a customer wants to use their phone service outside of their home area, the service is “handed off” to another carrier.

The Good

  • Wide Array of Phones Available
  • Cell Phone Plan Options
  • Coverage Area Networks
  • Customer Service
  • Rebates & Rewards

Wide Array of Phones Available

There are many good things about US Cellular's products and services, starting with the availability of a wide array of phones. The carrier supports and sells iPhones, Android smartphones, Windows phones, and Blackberry products.

Us Cellular also offers iPads, Android tablets, cellular modems for laptop computers, and accessories that can be used on the road.

Cell Phone Plan Options

US Cellular has several different plans and services available for customers. The company's Shared Connect plan forms the core of its contract services. We like the simplicity of Shared Connect, which includes unlimited minutes and texting. With non-contract phones and some other contract carriers, the user is often strapped to a certain number of minutes or text messages if they go with a "lower" service level.

US Cellular offers several different features that go along with contract phone service. For example, there is overage protection, which is free. However, the overage protection is in the form of a text message that is sent to the customer.

US Cellular also offers no-contract phones, tablets with data connectivity, and other services.

Coverage Area Networks

US Cellular's "Shared Connect" and 4G LTE plans work in all fifty states. You can go outside of your "home" area and still enjoy great service without being subject to roaming charges. This is an important feature for those who want to use their phone while they are on the road.

Customer Service

US Cellular offers phone, email, and live chat support options.

Rebates & Rewards

US Cellular occasionally offers rebates as an incentive to purchase a phone or plan. The company also has a good rewards program that involves referring customers or attending device workshops to earn points. These points can be used towards phone upgrades and accessory purchases.

The Bad

  • Service Area Stipulation
  • Two-Year Contracts
  • Cancellation Fees
  • Data Price Scale

Service Area Stipulation

Included in the fine print is a service area stipulation. US Cellular reserves the right to terminate a client's contract if they use 50% of their coverage outside of their "home area." This is because US Cellular brokers some of its coverage from other network providers. We felt like this is not true nationwide coverage.

Two-Year Contracts

US Cellular offers two-year contracts on most of its basic and smartphones. The smartphones are subject to a heavy cancellation fee in order to ensure that the customer keeps the phone. US Cellular also offers "penny" phones, the most basic of phones for the user that wants to keep their service simple.

Cancellation Fees

Cancellation fees for contract phones with US Cellular are on the pricey side. Basic phone contracts come with a $150 cancellation fee and smartphones come with a $350 cancellation fee. We felt that this cancellation fee policy straps the customer into a contract for a long period of time.

However, if a contract is a concern for a customer, there are "no-contract" options available.

Data Price Scale

Another thing that isn't ideal is the exponential price scale for higher-level data plans. The recommended data plans on Shared Connect often lock a family into a higher-end service level, but ensure that the family does not go over their data limit. There are also options on the phone that allow a parent or a decision maker to "lock" the data if they find that one particular line is being abused.

Customer Complaints

Some customers have reported issues with billing as well as promised discounts that were not honored. Overall, US Cellular generally responds to customer complaints reasonably and fairly, making sure that the customer receives credit when necessary if billing issues arise.

gavel

The Bottom Line

US Cellular has some good qualities and some bad ones. Ultimately, we hesitantly recommend US Cellular under certain conditions and after reading the terms and services carefully to avoid expensive fees. In order to avoid having your contract canceled, you need to monitor your usage closely and primarily stay in your home area.

I've been a US Cellular customer for 20+ years but no more. 2 years ago the coverage at my summer cottage in northern Wisconsin disappeared. Calls to tech support were no help. We closed the cottage in October with coverage, opened in May with nothing. They claimed the only changes to their tower was in prep for 5G. Borrowed hotspots from the library for a while but with Covid waning they no longer have as many. Switched to another carrier on May 17, eleven days into my billing cycle. Paid them for the 11 days and just got a bill for the remaining 19. Called customer service and they refused to credit me claiming they bill by the month, no exceptions, even when they remove service. To avoid a ding on my credit report I paid the $65. I hope they choke on it.

DON'T DO IT!!! The service isn't that great and for the price you pay, it's ridiculous. It just seems to be getting worse over time also. They tell me if I am changing areas I need to power my phone off and on. I don't want to be doing that all day. Plus simple things like using their voicemail. You have to listen to all the talking of welcome to US Cellular and on and on. Let me just press 1 and get to my messages. Then if you don't press keep or delete at the end and hang up, it shows back up as a new message on your screen and you have to go through everything again. Customer service is a nightmare, but I find Verizon to be the same way. I think most customer service these days are bad. I'm just tired if poor reception for a big price.

I unfortunately chose US Cellular for my daughter. I purchased a phone for her for Christmas. They tried telling me my name didn’t match my social then wanted me to go into the store. Then they call me back and said it was their system, that everything was fine. So I get the phone, activate it, wrap it and give it to her. Now it won’t call out. They said the service has been suspended because THEY CANT VERIFY ME! I haven’t even had my first bill come due! I call and they can’t help me over the phone, now they want me to go into the store AGAIN and prove my identity. The supervisor was very condescending, uncaring and basically said tough luck. They couldn’t explain to me WHY this happened, only that it did. Then when asked how to return the phone and cancel she wouldn’t answer. Pathetic.

Been in the Shelby County service area since they first "deployed" here in 1995. Been with them since 2007. First through my parents plan then on my sisters from 2008 to 2011 when I dropped my line due to lack of service availability. I filed complaints with US Cellular in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Each time informing them their coverage in town is not what they told the FCC or publish on their public coverage maps. In 2009 and 2011 they both agreed and said a tower was being planned to fill in that coverage gap and it would be up by 1Q 2012 (4Q 2011 was their planned date). It never came. So I dropped them and went without a phone for 4 years. In 2015 I was told it was going up finally and I called and the tech support said it was and it would be up within a year. So I said on the condition it was going up within that time frame, I would sign up. In 2017 I began to get agitated when service still wasn't deployed here.. I sent a message to their social media team. They just said they hadn't gotten any reports of any outages and said I should contact tech support. Problem is- I would have to drive outside of town to make the call or if I am lucky stand on the deck and use the speaker phone. (which I did). This time, the engineers responded back with.. "Your coverage is fine. Its just speed issues. No capacity problems either. A new tower is needed for speed improvements." and they labeled my town as a "lack of speed issue" when I filed my complaint as a SERVICE AVAILABILITY ISSUE. Its never been a speed issue, its been a.. "can I even get signal in town issue?" I've told them what their problem is.. Uplink. Their towers have so much between them that the phones they have out can't talk to the towers. So, yea sure.. their downlink can reach but what good is it if the phone can't send anything back? This has been 10+ years of lies from US Cellular's engineers for this town and I am flat fed up. They get paid high cost support from the government for this area too to offset the costs of having towers put up out here. As for my ratings.. Value for the money is about all they got if you have service and an older Total Plan. The new plans flat suck as you lose hotspot and a bunch of other features.

US Cellular did not advise us that the service in the area we were moving to was spotty. After trying to deal with the lack of service and returning to the store for help or return our phones, they made some software adjustments and asked us to see how that worked. We returned the phones 6 days later (one had never been activated); at which time the sales person cancelled our service and indicated that we didn't owe anything. Shortly after we received an invoice for $255.44; we waited to receive a credit to offset this charge. When we didn't receive the credit, we called US Cellular and were told a new bill had an amount of $90+ dollars. The representative said he would try to drop it to $21+; however, he ran into a problem and sent us to another department. The girl there said were responsible for the $90+ bill, but she could lower it to $86. We agreed to pay it just to not have to have anything to do with US Cellular in the future. When we asked for a copy of the invoice we were paying be sent to us (after making the payment), she told us that they could not provide us with that documentation. Don't believe anything they tell you. Answers change as it pleases them.

I got double billed this last weekend. Us Cellular took out $311.65 twice. It was done on 11/29 and 11/30, and both posted to my bank account on 12/2. When we called to tell them, they told us it would take at least 20 days to get it refunded back into my account. Then we were told they did not believe us even though they told us our bill was paid in full AND we had a credit of $311.65. They are making us go to our bank and our bank has to fax them a statement showing that they took out 2 times the amount owed. I am so mad! This won’t make it back into my account and now I can’t make my house payment because I had to transfer money from another account to cover the extra $311.65 charge. This is stellar customer service!!!😡

I pay 116.00 per month with mobile tendering on my phone so I can connect to the internet....When the service works. Brian, a tech....rude, condescending. Tried t3lling me nothing can be done because I have a crack on the BACK of the phone. Live reps sqid it was no issue. I can't get online if I'm using the phone....but NOMONE HAS OFFERED ANY CREDITS FOR THE CALLS, EMAILS, CHATS I've had to endure with horrible reps. They don't care as long as they get their money. Of course, I'm strapped in a contract for a phone I hate. Everything was fine till I had problems, then BOOM, every contwct I had were jerks.

I was in need of a new phone and while we were getting it I inquired about the unlimited plan. The agent ran the numbers and the price he showed me on his phone was less than my monthly bill now. I asked at least 10x so with the new phone and this plan I would pay less each month. He insisted yes. So I switched. I got a bill about 2 weeks later and it was close to what he said. I was very pleased. My next bill came and it was nearly double! I was angry when I went I I was told there wasn't anything they could do. I told her I would like to be switched back to the plan I was on. She stated that plan did not exist anymore. I told her I would like to return the new phone. She stated it had been too long. I was extremely frustrated at this point. I told her I would like to speak with a manager. She called customer support. She asked what I wanted from them. I told her I didn't want to pay anymore than I would have if I had just upgraded my phone. They could not do this. No customer satisfaction. They took no responsibility for their agents mistake and did not help me.

I got US Cellular because my phone says its 4G in my area while other carriers are not 4G. However, I have discovered that US Cellulars 4G (where available) is worse that other carriers 3G. Furthermore they say their service works all over the country, but in 2 years I've found very few areas in the US that I am not roaming. Often, I have 1x or no data coverage while my wife's Verizon phone has 3G or 4G. When in Alaska, my phone says I have mobile data, but I found out through multiple phone calls to US Cellular that they failed to negotiate an agreement with a carrier in Alaska so there is no data coverage there. Now they have blocked my data because they say I have exceeded my roaming data limits, which I cannot find in the agreement or on the web site anywhere. What I can find on their web site is that they can limit my speed after I exceed my limit but it does not say they can turn it off. I also cannot find our what the "roaming limit" is. Now I have lost half my month of data that I paid for and cannot even use my phone in their home territory. When I called to find out why I could not use my mobile data, they told me it had been blocked and that a supervisor would call me back. After a few days, and no call back, I was informed that it might be up to 72 hours getting a call back. Try a week. And their stores are also bad. When my phone failed because of a defective battery, I went to a store to have it looked at. While the tech was looking at my phone, the store manager came over and made her stop helping me and told me I would have to replace my phone, even though it was just a few months old. I would definitely stay away from this phone company.

Have been a customer of US Cellular for ** 16 ** years!! Have been charged for text messages at $0.25 per for many years... that was our original agreement. US Cellular never contacted us to let us know we would be able to get a cheaper program. After 16 years, paying $80 per month for 3 lines, and ... get this ... 25 cents per text message!! ... they conceded to reducing our bill to $75 !!!! WOW! After 16 years of being scammed for the text messages... some loyalty. We are actively looking for ANY other carrier that will not charge us $0.25 for EACH text message!!! 16 years of loyalty. What a company!!

If I could give less than one star, I would. The actual communication service is perhaps the worst in the United States. Villagers in the Andes probably have a more reliable network. If you utilize a cell phone for work or business, this company is simply not an option. I dropped an average of 10 phone calls per day while traveling for work. Cellular data availability was spotty at best. This is not, however, a reflection of their customer service. It's a shame that such good people have such a bad product to represent. The service is worth about 25% of what they charge, if that.

US Cellular did a dash mounted, hard wired phone in my car, the tech had tools in his pocket, sat in the seats during the install and put several punctures and two 3 cornered tears. When taking the headliner out for installing the antenna, he tore that as well. The company never would come good for the damages. If I could give a negative 5, I would of done that.

US Cellular is the worst internet cell service I have ever used. I live 4 miles from their tower in the middle of a cleared 60 acre field and am lucky if I get 0.20 mbps speed, that's 2 TENTHS of one meg speed. Or even worse it drops to a 1X speed or nothing at all. So much for the strongest signal in the middle of anywhere. The company should be sued by the federal government

I am a current customer and I was lied to from the get go. They said my husband and I could turn in our old phones and get new ones for free. Once we signed our contract and received our 1st bill it was too late to cancel. We did not get the credits for our old phones and wound up having to pay a monthly charge for our phones. After all the charges and stuff we were paying $325 a month for 4 phones. With Sprint we were only paying $175. The service sucks. We hardly ever have good internet service. They claim to have 4G and I live in Oklahoma City so it is a major city and barely get 1 to 2 bars of service at any given time a lot of the time it is only 3G service. If I go into a store I lose it and go into 3G service or no service at all.
