The Bad

  • Limited Options
  • Lack of Transparency

Limited Options

While there are solutions for financing through Community Bank, the options are rather limited. Not only will individuals need to qualify and meet the standards before getting approved for these loans, there are not many milestones or opportunities that Community Bank can finance. The only loan options include the following:

  • Personal Loans: comes with competitive rates, payment protections, and simple payment options.
  • Home Equity Loans - competitive fixed rates and terms with no closing costs. Interest paid may be tax-deductible.
  • Home Mortgages - fixed rate loans that can include mortgage refinancing.

Lack of Transparency

Community Bank claims to offer competitive interest rates on both checking and savings schools, however they do not necessarily disclose this information. That makes it hard for prospective clients to determine exactly what "competitive" entails and how much they can expect their money to grow over time.

Called Customer Service today to check why a replacement bank card ordered at least 2 weeks ago had not been received yet . I was told they had no record of me ordering a new card. This was not as big of a problem as the attitude of the woman providing the Customer Service. I believe employee’s giving Customer Service should be made to take a mandatory class in People Skills

Hi, Your service is terrible. You always block my card (even for legitimate transactions). Your customer telephone support is closed on weekends. If I were to contact your customer support, I have to do it only Mon-Fri during office hours(my office restricts using mobile phones during these times). I tried contacting customer support during one of the weekdays. I waited in phone more than an hour and still nobody picked it up. Thats why I am moving away from ur bank.

Stay away. First bad experience auto loan where in order to get loan I had to do setup auto payments. Okay has to be paid. 3 years later collections is hassleing me for on pay. Come to find out it was being done manually and then stop. So of course it was my fault even though a bank rep told me they did not understand why it was being done that. No apologies or explanation of why when I was told they would call. Account #2 money moved from family account to another to care for my mother showed up on an account that was not mentioned in the transaction o deposited in the third account. Took money from third account to correct an error that still exists only now on the third account. Bank Happy my#%^!

Community took over my hometown bank last year, at which I'd opened my account 20 years ago and have always had wonderful experiences. After the merger, the online platform and customer service have been horrendous. For months afterward, I couldn't use my card as a debit, only as credit, because they couldn't get their machine to create a pin, regardless of how many times I visited the local branch. The customer service for online transactions is abyssmal. I have been trying to stay loyal, but I no longer see the point if I'm to be constantly frustrated by this company.

ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE FRI. 6PM-MON 9 AM, ALL THE TIME. For a second time my account is locked, all charges rejected (FEES ATTACHED FROM MERCHANT). One branch was opened Sat. 9-12 but they can't help. Their customer service is CLOSED ALL THE WAY in 2023 for the ENTIRE WEEKEND. WHA??? I had people scheduled to move into a furnished apartment tomorrow, for which I needed to buy new furnishings and could not. So Community Bank made me a dead beat landlord before my teneants even get here. Besides, the furniture I was planning to buy was 56% off for the weekend ONLY! I am SO FURIOUS!!! So now I get to spend an additional hundreds of dollars because of Community Bank NA being unavailable to serve their customers for days. I should also note that Friday their ENTIRE banking system online was down for the entire day and I couldn't do my shopping then either. So three straight days can't access any money at all. Reject fees from utility companies for rejected for no reason payments plus hours of phone calls trying to fix it. Deadbeat landlord status now paying 56% more to furnish the space for my tenants. ALL COURTESY 100% OF COMMUNITY BANK NA

Is there a “negative” star option? I am DONE with this “bank”. After 12 years with (Merchants) now a CBNA I’ve had my last negative experience. My debit card is hit or miss if it works (my husband won’t even stay next to me when the “orange” card comes out) because it NEVER works and he’s tired of the embarrassment and experience of seeing me bewildered as to why it “didn’t work this time?” It’s not for lack of available funds. Today when I tried to use it FIVE times to make an online purchase, this bank debited my account and continued to decline the charge. When I called - I was told that they’re aware of online POS issues while using the card and they could cancel this one and send me a new one! WHY??? I can’t get away from this bank quick enough. Listen to the reviews.

This bank is dedicated to keeping poor struggling people poor and struggling. They pick and choose when they charge late or over draft fees. So as soon as you get a few dollars in your account after and accidental over draw, they charge you a late fee to put you back in the negative. If you over draft while I’m the negative they don’t do anything because it’s less money for them.

This company continued to harass me from a 614 area code using multiple numbers. The female agents were heinous. One of them talked down to me in a ugly fashion, another one accused me of cussing at them, and another basically hung up on me. The only reason I got my issue resolved was that I stuck with it and and got a rep that was halfway decent and a supervisor who resolved my hell of a problem. This Victoria's Secret card I had paid off but wasn't told at the time I was going to be charged interest in beyond pay off! The supervisor said that I was relieved of any more charges but I only hope that that turns out to be the case. I've talked to a lot better collection agents who are at least willing to listen without shouting and making matters worse. The best thing to do is pay these cards in full but unfortunately the PINK card charges so much interest, especially if you elect to have their balance pay insurance added. Don't do it.

Just don’t know how to behave: Overly “secure” or too many questions to Id you Got a text when I bought an .89 cent soap bar to verify it was not fraud Cashier took my check without saying why, called to phone number, still acting suspicious at me—-it my work check from over 7 months Their deposit verification takes days/expect pending charges and true balances to be off by at least 3 days Not fast enough computer system Paranoid staff, unable to handle how to verify with courtesy, rude and derogatory Charge you to when you just check your balances/$1 every time Charges/$2 on top of other fees from ATM withdrawals They will charge you for every possible service Ask you for your SSN to identify you when account numbers are on file, again overly suspicious Just don’t know the business-one or two good transactions with clerks, the rest are jerks. Too new at banking-charge too much-low communicative skills-train their employees wrong Two years there and I regretted every day. Not a good bank.

This bank has many times given me trouble, but this last time makes me give them the lowest score. After my husband tried to cash a couple of his checks to deposit some of the cash into my account, the bank teller that waited on him didn't even do what he asked and instead we have no clue what she did. All we know is she handed him the cash he asked for out of the checks and the rest wasn't even posted on the bank online. Reminding you she was supposed to cash the checks and deposit some of the money which means it should have showed up. Anyways the next day, it said i had half the money he deposited, i checked my transactions even though i din't buy anything. And it said I had an unavailable funds fee taken out. What is that? I tried to contact the customer service and nobody could tell me what that was and that it wasn't even showing anything that could make that happen so the guy said we have to contact the branch we use directly. We did today and nobody could help us. They claimed the manager has to help us and that they were on lunch, two hours later my husband calls back and they tell him the manager still is not there.

Honestly I do not even give this bank one star. I wish there was a no star option. Community Bank NA has THE WORST "customer service" (if you can even call it that!!) of any bank I have dealt with in the past 50 years. They simply refuse to take responsibility for anything. They have clearly been trained to avoid accepting the word of their customers. When a company charged one of my debit cards without any authorization, I called into to report it. You would think I had attempted to rob the bank from the reaction I got. Not only was I not believed but days later I received a letter from the bank informing me that no such unauthorized transaction occurred!! Simply amazing arrogance. The manager at the branch I opened my account with is rude, and purposely as unhelpful as possible. She always seems to be ready to take a break instead of helping her customers. This is truly a bank to avoid at all costs.

Extreme caution, STAY AWAY from Community Bank Trust Division. Family trust, father died and the Trustees have been dishonest, hired an attorney and lied repeatedly. My dad has been dead 8 months and the beneficiaries are still waiting for our trusts to be funded. We have hired attorneys and the attorneys are getting no response from the trustees and their counsel. Petition in Surrogate Court is the next step. The family has not been able to properly grieve because we have struggled with the breach in fiduciary duty, market losses to the trust funds, imprudent use of trust funds to make repairs on the trust property listed at the appraised value. These people are incompetent. They hide behind non-communication. Take your family wealth and hide it in a mattress- you'll still have it which is more than what happened to my family.

Despite all internet ads to the contrary Community Bank, N.A. charges a statement fee for the totally free checking accounts. They will not waive the fee on a totally free checking account opened in 2004, unless you agree to a statement by email, according to the Star Lake, NY branch manager, who tries to get you to open a different account or supply an email address. I chose to close my account. For security reasons and not wanting to get on a junk mail list, I do not conduct ANY personal financial or personal business via internet. When I called the 800.388.4679 the person could not answer my questions about the totally free checking accounts advertised on the internet and asked to spear to a mgr she switched me to the local branch where all of this started. I now have a supply of unusable personal checks. I left a voicemail msg for th District Mgr, now waiting for a reply.

Community Bank took over my local bank last year with no warning and no follow-up for its customers. I travel frequently for work and realized my local bank was gone only when I tried to access my account online. The website didn't exist anymore! After struggling with CB's customer service to get a 'new' online account set up, it became clear that none of the banking history from the previous decade was available (and never will be). Just talked with another customer service representative with an unhelpful attitude about coming into the branch instead of answering my question over the phone. This is clearly no longer a local bank with service in mind. Looking forward to closing this account and moving the funds to Vermont Federal Credit Union, where they care about their members, have a great app with free mobile check deposit, and pay a reasonable interest rate on checking accounts.

The electronic banking and loan processing is the worst. They may as well not even bother - and customer service is obviously numb to complaints. We had 2 car loans through them. I will never use them again and am telling the dealer we used to drop them. The first was paid off and they continued to deduct money on schedule without any recognition of a zero balance. It took us 2 months to get our over-payment back. The second loan was also setup for automatic payments and withdrawals just stopped for no apparent reason. We only found out because they turned us over to collections - no other courtesy notice that the ACH was ending or that we missed a payment. They said "sometimes there is an expiration on the ACH payments" but couldn't tell us anything different. WE USED THEIR FORM to set up the payments. Nothing was wrong on our bank's end. We decided to pay this second loan off in full so we don't have to deal with this bank any longer and have told our bank that any further withdrawals from them should be considered fraudulent. I will never use Community Bank again and will advise every person I know to avoid them. Hopefully the FDIC shuts them down. It's a shame they have acquired so many small local banks and are ruining the lives of their customers.

Community Bank acquired my home-town bank. The first time we had to renew our business line of credit after the merger they processed it under the wrong program and we had to start the process all over again. We were asked for the same information over and over again. I had a similar experience when I tried to open a home equity line of credit. The process took months and by the time it closed I had found alternative financing. Loan officers were emailing my tax returns with no encryption so all my personal information was out there for all the world to see. You would think a bank would know better. I sent the information to them using a secure cloud service and then they were emailing it back and forth among themselves . I know this because I was cc'd on one of the emails. Yesterday was the last straw. I called the customer service number with a simple question. The greeting expressed how important my call was to them and then asked me to leave a number and they would call back. You guessed it. Never got a call back. If I ran my business like this my clients we jump ship in droves.

I tried using online banking, but my phone number has changed since opening an account with community bank na years ago. I have recently moved out of NY and tried transferring my funds to my new bank account in the new state where I've moved to but the online banking wants to send me a code via text message to my phone for security purposes. The problem is I don't have that same phone number and there's no way to update my new number through their online banking. They are asking that I drive 13 hours to their branch to update my new phone number. This bank is horrible on customer service for the elderly.

I received an auto loan through CBNA 3 years ago. I wanted to do business with a local bank, and I have regretted it ever since. Archaic technology and horrific customer service make for a monthly nightmare. Simply enrolling in auto-pay requires you to send certified mail to them. I am refinancing and they are being insufferable to work with, I actually laughed out loud on the phone over how needlessly rude their staff is. I will regret doing business with this bank for years to come. Absolutely awful.

Absolutely the worst bank you can do business with. Avoid with all costs. They have it now where if you make a payment on your due date you can still get a late fee if it’s past a certain time regardless, if you’re making it on your due date. And not only that, they increase your late fee without notifying you, and all they say is it’s in the fine print. These people are crooks. There are so many other better banks to do business with that care about their customers.

In 2021, I was the victim of over $10,000 of fraud through my CBNA checking account. Though the theft occurred through the bank systems and no fault of my own, and despite the fact that I was hospitalized for cancer much of this time, the bank blamed me and refused to reimburse more than half the money or to even apologize. Got hooked up with this bank through an auto loan and I've been regretting it ever since! They make it hard and complicated to set up an online account and try to steer you towards auto pay. The hilariously named EZ Pay phone service is an absolute joke, you have to enter your account and routing g information every time and it doesn't give you account details.
