Owlet Baby Care is a health technology company founded by a team of parents in 2013. The company is probably best known for its flagship product, the Smart Sock.
The Smart Sock is a baby monitor that monitors and tracks your baby's oxygen level and heart rate while they sleep. The device uses pulse oximetry to monitor and collect data — the data being your baby's heart rate and oxygen levels. This information is relayed to the Owlet Base Station. From there, the information is then sent to your smartphone.
To be used in conjunction with the Smart Sock is the Owlet Cam (a smart HD video baby monitor). The Owlet Cam streams HD 1080p video with night vision and two-way audio. The camera connects to your phone via a secure, encrypted Wi-Fi connection.
Owlet's Monitor Duo combines state-of-the-art insights from the Smart Sock with the Owlet Cam's advanced technology.
When these two products are used together, they go beyond the capabilities of any other baby monitor. You can easily keep track of your baby's heart rate and oxygen levels, plus you can stream HD video to your smartphone to ensure your baby is safe and healthy.
The Monitor Duo costs $399.
Keep in mind that Wi-Fi is required to view live readings and video from the Owlet app. The Owlet Cam needs a Wi-Fi connection to stream video and audio to your phone.
However, the Smart Sock and Base station are connected via Bluetooth. If your Wi-Fi goes down or your phone dies, the Owlet Base Station will notify you if your baby needs attention.
To be clear, you don't need to buy both the Smart Sock and the Owlet Cam (the products work just fine on their own).
The Owlet Cam costs $149, and the Smart Sock costs $299.
It is important to know that if you purchase the Owlet Cam on its own, you only will see the live video feed. There won't be any of the additional insights from the Smart Sock.
The Owlet Cam comes with a myriad of features designed to give parents peace of mind. The camera comes with remote monitoring via the Owlet App, a room-temperature sensor, night vision, HD 1080p video, adjustable magnetic base, two-way audio, 130-degree wide-angle lens, background audio mode, and secure, encrypted Wi-Fi.
The Owlet Smart Sock works best for children up to one year but fits most children up to 18 months old. It is also designed for babies up to 30 pounds.
Owlet's prices aren't exactly the cheapest options in the market, but the company does allow you to finance the purchase with the help of Affirm.
Choosing to finance your purchase with Affirm allows you to make smaller, more affordable payments over 3, 6, or 12 months.
If you want to, you can use your HSA or FSA funds to purchase the Owlet Monitor Duo or the Owlet Smart Sock.
You cannot, however, use your HSA or FSA to purchase the Owlet Cam.
If you are unsatisfied with your Owlet purchase, the company will let you return the item for a full refund.
To qualify for a full refund, you need to return the product within 30 calendar days (this pertains to items such as the Smart Sock or Owlet Cam).
You may also receive a full refund for online products such as the Dream lab if you request the refund within 15 days of registration.
The Owlet Smart Sock is not a medical device and is not intended to be used as a medical device or to replace a medical device. Additionally, Owlet's products are not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, alleviate, or prevent any disease or health condition or investigate, replace or modify anatomy or any physiological process.
While Owlet is actually extremely transparent about this, there's no harm in repeating it.
Additionally, the Smart Sock is not covered by insurance. However, as stated before, you can use your HSA or FSA funds to purchase the Owlet Smart Sock or the Monitor Duo.
The Owlet Cam is not covered by insurance and the IRS does not approve it for coverage by HSA or FSA accounts.
Aiming to keep every baby safe and empower parents, Owlet's products utilize modern technology to ensure every parent can easily monitor and track their child's health.
Although Owlet isn't the cheapest baby monitor, the sheer number of camera features makes it well worth the cost. That being said, if the upfront costs are a little too steep for your budget, we recommend financing your purchase with Affirm.
Through Affirm, you can make affordable monthly payments and eventually pay for your Owlet products over 3 ,6, or 12 months. If you have an HSA or FSA account, you can use that to pay for the Duo Monitor or Smart Sock. However, you cannot use these accounts for the Owlet Cam.
If you're still a little hesitant about making the purchase, there is a satisfaction guarantee. The guarantee gives you 30 days (from the date of purchase) to return the item for a full refund.
However, we think that Owlet's products are well worth the cost, and as a parent, you won't regret the peace of mind this baby monitor brings.
