The Bad

  • Must Meet Eligibility Requirements
  • Some Types of Coverage Not Available Everywhere

Must Meet Eligibility Requirements

If you want to buy car insurance from USAA, you'll need to become a USAA member. U.S. military members and veterans, pre commissioned officers, their spouses and children can all join. USAA does not charge a membership fee.

If you're not eligible for USAA membership, you'll need to look into other options.

Some Types of Coverage Not Available Everywhere

You'll need to work with USAA directly to understand specific offerings in your area. While many of its services are available widely, not all of its coverage options are. For example, accident forgiveness coverage isn't available in all states.

While this variation can be frustrating, USAA offers many good policy options and discounts that you can benefit from.

I have had USAA insurance for along time! I have never had a problem until I was in an accident with someone that also had USAA. It was determined that I was not at fault. It was very difficult to reach a supervisor and it was very difficult to get my medical paid. I asked for a call back and never received a call back.

As far as customer service, they are TOP-NOTCH!! Their premiums are higher than most, but the coverage is good. BUT once you file a claim, even the smallest, your rates skyrocket. A family member bumped the rear bumper of a 1993 Chevy Cavalier with nearly 300K miles on it. Literally, the car was probably worth $100. The young man driving said another driver sideswiped him and he just took the check and never fixed the vehicle. Our vehicle had ZERO damage. Not even a scuff. The other driver's bumper had a small dent. USAA paid them $1000 for the bumper and our insurance premium was raised $103 per month. After that happened, we went through a broker who found better coverage for less than our original premium we had with USAA. Also, only military families can join USAA, making it sound like they are doing the military men and women a favor, but in all actuality, it cost us more.

I have had USAA for several years before I decided to switch. During that time USAA has had amazing customer service, but has been fairly expensive. So I'm giving it 3 stars because they are expensive and they do not know what they are talking about. The last couple months I had USAA I had some issues with the bill and each representative I talked to could not explain to me what the problem was with the bill. They kept having to get another representative and overall they could not help me lower my bill because for some crazy reason, the last premium they calculated was for 5 months (instead of 6) and they could not help me at all by making it 6 months again, no matter how many times I called and tried. We switched because they were unclear about explaining the bill every single time.

We have been customers of USAA Auto Insurance for over 30 years with no incidents until a couple of years ago. My husband was in an accident and the car was totaled. USAA did not give us enough to replace what we were losing. Even though we could prove the car was worth more, there was no budging. They are a great company as long as you never have a need to use the insurance.

I used to be a USAA insurance customer. I used them for over 10 years. I never had an at-fault wreck. However, after my son was rear-ended by another USAA member, I decided to switch. USAA gave me very little for my totaled car and rejected all the similar models I found showing the car was worth more. They also refused to pay my car rental for longer than a couple weeks. After receiving such bad service on the receiving end, I switched to GEICO and have been happy since. I pay quite a bit more for GEICO, but it's worth it in my opinion.

I called for a quote on my vehicles. And the rates were way more than USAA and StateFarm. I thought this was so weird because my parents and sons insurance was lower with them.

I attempted to acquire a quote with USAA and it was indeed a tedious process. My husband suggested I use this insurance company because they were reasonable for members. I could not acquire a membership with USAA. It was a lot of red tape. No insurance company should be that difficult to earn their business.

Primarily an insurer for armed forces families, rates appear to be competitive. The insurer appears to protect their customers, but on the other hand, USAA tends to give the run around when their customers are at fault in the accidents by delaying payment and reducing payment to the victims.

I have been with USAA for over 20 years. We have 6 drivers on our plan. Recently 3 drivers received speeding tickets within the same year. USAA dropped us due to our tickets. We have a great record and have had no major accidents in over 20 years. This was so disappointing! We are frustrated with this action by such a favored company.

This auto’s insurance isn’t my favorite. I had some problems with the customer service at this company. The experience might be different for you but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Didn't really have a chance to experience this company as much as I really would have liked to but started out to be a good company and reasonable price 😉

When I was in the service I used USAA , was young and dumb. Their prices are crazy high. Agents were rude. Not impressive.

They did not cover my son's accident five years ago. Used a lawyerly gimmick to opt out.
