The Good

  • High Financial Strength Ratings
  • Competitive Coverage
  • Modified and Classic Car Coverage
  • Savings Through Discounts

High Financial Strength Ratings

Auto-Owners has received high financial strength ratings from A.M. Best, which indicates that the insurer is financially stable and likely to be able to meet its claims obligations.

High financial strength ratings are common among top insurers, so Auto-Owners's high rating makes it worth exploring further.

Competitive Coverage

Auto-Owners Insurance offers the typical options for car insurance coverage:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Liability (bodily injury and property damage)
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist
  • Medical payments
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

You can also add roadside assistance coverage. Auto-Owners's roadside assistance is available anytime throughout the United States and Canada.

Beyond offerings common to the industry, Auto-Owners offers several less common coverage options:

  • Additional expense (rental car reimbursement, lodging reimbursement if stranded for repairs)
  • Loan or lease gap (pays off the rest of your financial obligation minus the car's current value if your car is totaled)
  • Diminished value (covers change in car's value after an accident)

You can bundle 10 extra coverage options through Auto-Owners's Personal Automobile Plus Package. Specific details about this package are limited online, so be sure to ask your agent for more information.

Modified and Classic Car Coverage

In addition to everyday cars, Auto-Owners covers two types of specialty cars: modified and classic cars. Online information regarding coverage options and requirements for these specialty vehicles is limited, so you'll need to work with an agent to learn more.

Savings Through Discounts

Like many car insurance providers, Auto-Owners offers discounts to help its clients save:

  • Multiple policies, including one specific to life insurance
  • Multiple vehicles
  • Vehicle safety features
  • Good student
  • Student Away at School
  • Teen Driver Monitoring
  • Favorable loss history
  • History of on-time payments
  • Paying an annual premium
  • Paperless billing and online payments
  • Advance quote

These discounts are all common for the auto insurance industry, so these savings opportunities help make Auto-Owners competitive.

You can also opt for a higher deductible to save on premiums.

The Bad

  • Limited Availability
  • Minimal Customer Insight

Limited Availability

Auto-Owners offers insurance in 26 states. However, details about which states are unclear from its website. However, you can use the company's online tool for finding an agent to see if there's one in your area.

Minimal Customer Insight

Although Best Company has received several Auto-Owners Insurance reviews, the review count is low compared to other insurers listed on BestCompany.com.

General conclusions are not currently available. However, it's promising that Auto-Owners Insurance's current reviews are primarily positive. These reviews note positive experiences with customer service and low premium rates.

The Bottom Line

Auto-Owners Insurance has many features that make it worth considering. It offers competitive coverage and discounts, so you can have your coverage needs met and find helpful savings.

Beyond standard coverages, you can find protection against diminished value after an accident and gap coverage for your loan or lease.

If you own a classic car or a modified vehicle, you'll need to work with an agent to learn more about coverage available for these cars.

Although more customer reviews would offer valuable insight on the company, Auto-Owners Insurance is worth considering because of its work with independent agents, competitive coverage, and discounts.

Pamela B Fairmount, GA

I had a large tornado damsge my home, my adjuster for AO assigned an Independent Adjuster to provide the damage estimate to AO, but he didn't show up on the 1st appointment. The second appointment he brought his buddy who was a contractor who brought 2 Hispanic guys I think he picked up on his way. They didnt have any water with them and no lunch and were afraid of Heights they tarp they put up blew off the same night. The IA had recommended his for the job. The IA wrote a repair estimate that was no where near amount needed. AO sent an engineer who said the house had not moved but he didnt do any measuring or drop any plumb lines, I hired and Engineer and he spent hours documenting the damage, I used the appraisal clause and was awarded total of $ 109,000. for the repairs. They initially paid me $ 47,000.00. They sre the worst company ever (or the IA is the worst) either way they may appear to have good rates, I assure you they will cost you 10 times more if you have a claim.
