Learn To Be is a 501.3 non-profit that provides free tutor to at-risk students. This online platform allows at-risk students to receive one-on-one tutoring. This program was designed to help decrease the gap for underprivileged students. Learn To Be Believes all students deserve an education. We recommend Learn To Be for students in these types of situations.

Free Access
Learn To Be provides free tutoring sessions to underprivileged students across the nation. In order to qualify for these sessions, which start a one hour week and can change as needs are determined, students and guardians are required to fill out an application. Applications are found online and ask questions regarding the student and guardian to determine their need. Some questions are more personal and ask students' about their favorite book and what they could do to save the world. Once the application is complete, Learn To Be will call the guardian to better asses the situation and set-up a time to start tutoring. While Learn To Be wants to help all students, tutoring typically starts at 5th grade or higher.Whiteboard Access
Another highlight of Learn To Be is their virtual classroom platform. This classroom gives students help in addition to one-on-one tutoring. Students are able re-watch sessions and gain further information by watching it back. The virtual classroom also has exercises by Khan Academy to help tutors further assess students and make sure they are understanding concepts. This online classroom helps tutors improve their teaching skills by going back and watching videos and seeing what they can improve on.Certified Tutors
Learn To Be only offers certified tutors for students to learn from. Anyone can volunteer to become a tutor, they just have to go through an application process to be accepted and become certified. All tutors are volunteers; they are not paid to tutor.The Bad

Since this is a need-based tutoring platform, the variety of subjects is unclear. Learn To Be does not specify what kind of subjects they provide tutoring for. It seems as though subject matter is strictly determined by the student on what their needs are. In other platforms, this could become a problem, but in Learn To Be's case, they base what subjects they tutor case-by-case.Limited Student Availability

It’s honestly been such a happy experience tutoring with Learn To Be. There’s something really special about watching a student go from “this makes no sense” to suddenly getting it, like you can literally see their confidence grow. One of my students this year ended up getting an A after struggling so much in the beginning, and moments like that just stay with you. It makes you feel like you’re actually making a difference in someone’s life, even in a small way. I’m really grateful I get to be part of that kind of progress!

My name is Angel and I have tutored over 200 hours with Learn To Be. I started in freshmen year in high school because I wanted volunteer hours, but also to have a good impact on other people. I found Learn To Be through some searching on the Internet. Fast forward 1 year later, I am so happy to have found this service. I like the easy flexibility and schedule it provides for tutors and students.
The thing I liked least about being a tutor in Learn To Be is that some students/parents are uncommitted at times, so we would agree on sessions, yet the other party will not show up last minute. I sometimes find myself to have to release the student, which I feel horrible about because I know it wasn't the student's fault, but the parent's. However, I don't think this is something Learn To Be have full control on their end, which is why I leave the rating with full marks.
I hope other high school students join Learn To Be as a tutor too!

Hi! I'm Bella N. and I am currently a tutor for Learn To Be. This has been an amazing experience. I love working with kids and helping them improve their skills academically, but also by helping them build up their confidence. This experience has also helped me learn new skills such as time management and problem-solving, which will help me in the future. I have been tutoring this kid for a while now, and I'm so glad that I can see her grow over time.
The Learn To Be platform is great for providing many useful tools to help me teach, such as IXL, Epic, and grade-level courses. There are also the options of having the tutoring session on Zoom or Google Meet. I'm pleased with how the website is formatted to be organized, helping me easily plan out and prepare for upcoming tutoring sessions.
Not only is being a tutor an opportunity to help others and grow yourself, but it's also a chance to connect with new people and make friends! I'm so glad to be part of the Learn To Be community, and I plan to continue having fun tutoring with Learn To Be.

I have been a tutor on this platform for around 2 years. During this time period, I have tutored numerous students while being part of many Learn To Be events, such as Summer Study Buddies and Tutor Corps.
I really like this program because it allows me to share my love of teaching by tutoring students one-on-one who need help in specific school subjects. I also appreciate how tutors are able to select students based on their specific subject needs, ensuring that the students you work with align with your skills and expertise.
Additionally, I really like the feature of group events, which allows tutors to schedule classes where they can teach numerous students at once about topics they are well-versed in. Through my time at Learn To Be, I have not only improved my teaching and communication skills, but I have also become more responsible and organized.
Overall, my experience with Learn To Be has been very rewarding, and I would recommend it to students looking for a meaningful way to help their community while making a real impact by bringing education to students around America.

Learn To Be is an incredible company - the tutors and staff members truly care about the students and want to see them succeed as much as possible. Being part of Tutor Corp has been an incredible experience because working one-on-one with my students and watching them grow has been especially meaningful to me. Over time, I saw noticeable improvements in their self-confidence, understanding of material, and overall engagement in learning. I had the opportunity to tutor two students—one in 4th grade and one in 6th—and was proud to see them stay ahead in their classes thanks to the personalized support we provided. I have been a tutor with Learn To Be for three years now, and it has been one of my most meaningful experiences in the service of others. Support flows in all directions! From my students’ families to the tutor Slack network, to the community moderators, to my wonderful students, I am guided, motivated, and encouraged at every step of the way! Learn To Be invests in quality education for its students – from securing an unlimited Zoom license to facilitate seamless weekly sessions, to providing access to various learning platforms (IXL, Epic!, and many more), to instituting a Learning Hub with question banks, tutor-created resources, and an AI education tool, it consistently advocates for exceptional education for its students, creating an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and seeking learning opprtinties.
The greatest lesson I have gleaned from tutoring with Learn To Be: the learning is always mutual. My students may learn a new phoneme, vocabulary word, or math concept, and I learn to be inspired by them every single day to never stop learning! I am honored to belong to this incredible mission.

This is Evan Park, and I am a high school student in GA.
I've been tutoring with LearnToBe for almost two years, and it's been an smooth experience. The platform provides amazing opportunities to support students who truly need it, and the flexibility allows tutors to make a difference on their own schedule. It also allowed to develop a sense of passion for tutoring and I learned some real world skills along the way such as responsibility, patience, and speaking in public.
One small challenge I've noticed is that, since LearnToBe is a free service for families, there can occasionally be cases where students don't show up for scheduled sessions. It’s understandable, but it can be a bit discouraging when you've prepared and a student doesn’t arrive. That said, the goods outweigh the cons, and I still highly recommend LearnToBe.

For the past year and a half, I have been a tutor with Learn To Be. At first, I was simply looking for a place to volunteer and help disadvantaged and underprivileged children since that is my passion. What I found at this organization is so much more. Not only have I had the privilege of educating young children in dire need, many of whom have no other alternatives, I have also been able to help them in other ways, such as providing free technology devices to families in partnership with Learn To Be and offering them career exploration opportunities with presenters with backgrounds in law, technology, education, and science and from organizations such as NASA and Meta. This has been an exceptionally fulfilling journey I have been on, working together with like-minded individuals who selflessly give their time and knowledge. As an organization that staunchly believes in free tutoring for the segments of our population most underserved, I have firsthand knowledge of their efforts to deliver while operating on a shoestring budget. My time here has felt as if I became part of a newfound family who truly epitomizes the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I have been blessed to have met over fifty families, many stating exceptional feedback from teachers as to the marked improvement of students, and some who no longer need tutoring because they are now above grade level in proficiency. While certain challenges and improvements can be made with any organization, the core mission and genuine desire to help exist within everyone I have come in contact with at this organization.

Volunteering as a tutor with Learn To Be has been a rewarding and meaningful experience for me. The platform provides a great opportunity to connect with younger students and support them in subjects they may be struggling with. It's incredibly fulfilling to watch a student gain confidence and improve academically over time, especially knowing that your guidance played a part in their growth.
One of the best aspects of Learn To Be is the flexibility and accessibility it offers both tutors and students. You're able to build a personal connection with your student and tailor your teaching style to what works best for them. It's a great way to give back while also strengthening your own communication and leadership skills.
That said, one of the challenges can be consistency. Sometimes, it’s hard to schedule regular sessions if a student’s parent or guardian isn't very responsive. This can make it difficult to maintain progress or develop a steady routine. But when communication flows well, the impact you can have is truly significant.
Overall, I highly recommend Learn To Be to anyone passionate about education and mentorship.

Learn To Be is such an amazing platform for both tutors and students. As a high school student, I was having trouble finding a platform that allowed people my age to tutor online, but Learn To Be let me connect with students from across the country, free of charge to the students! From the tutor's side of the platform, everything is very straightforward and easy to use.
