The Good

  • 14-Day Free Look
  • Trip Cancelation for Any Reason Option
  • Medical Coverage
  • Travel Delay
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

14-Day Free Look

John Hancock Travel Insurance comes with a 14-day refund policy, or free-look period. Other providers such as Allianz only offer 10 days.

Trip Cancelation For Any Reason Option

John Hancock offers a CFAR (Cancel for Any Reason) upgrade on every plan, while companies like Allianz Global Assistance do not.

Residents of the state of New York are excluded from this benefit.

Medical Coverage

Medical coverage is a high priority when it comes to choosing your travel insurance coverage.  This company offers heavy medical coverage. Even the lowest cost Bronze plan offers $50,000 for medical expenses and treatments

Travel Delay

The Silver and Gold plans travel delay benefits kick in sooner than most other providers, offering benefits after only three hours’ delay. Most other policies require a delay of 6 to 12 hours before benefits are available/eligible.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Policyholders with a pre-existing medical condition benefit from a shorter lookback period than most other travel insurers. At only 60 days, this is on the short end of the spectrum, which can go up to 180 days with some other insurance service providers.

The Bad

  • Extreme Sports Aren’t Covered
  • Kids Need Individual Policies
  • CFAR Option at 75%

Extreme Sports Aren’t Covered

If you are an adventure seeker with extreme sports on your itinerary, you may need to find a different policy provider. John Hancock doesn’t offer extreme sports coverage, not even as an add-on. Consider Travelex or World Nomads for a more adventurous travel insurance policy. So, if shoppers want to go scuba diving on a trip, they may need to look for different insurance coverage.

Kids Need Individual Policies

John Hancock offers generous plans, but no ‘kids covered for free’ policy options. So, if you go with this company, you will need additional policies for children traveling with you. Allianz Global Assistance and Travelex both offer some sort of kids for free coverage.

CFAR Option at 75%

If policyholders upgrade to have CFAR travel insurance coverage, they still have to pay to cover 100 percent of the cost of their trip, but the benefit only covers 75 percent of their non-refundable trip payments

The Bottom Line

John Hancock offers emergency travel assistance and emergency health insurance and evacuation in three main plans. Shoppers will be happy with John Hancock’s free look period, cancelation options, medical coverage, travel delay coverage, and short lookback period for pre-existing medical needs.

The company may lose potential customers because parents traveling with kids will have to purchase an additional insurance policy for each child. Additionally, adventure seekers aren’t covered for any hazardous sporting activities.

REFUSES to Reply to BBB, NCDOI, an Idaho Dept. of Insurance. Evidence of their intent to fraud is more than abundant and they refuse to answer to any consumer oversight groups! SCAM Company - At least their travel wing is! John Hancock denied two policy claims totaling $5000 claims for 7 months because they thought some "items claimed were returned to amazon." After 3 way phone calls with Amazon, 2 independent investigations with G4S Private Investigations and 72 pages of additional supporting documentation all proved they were either incorrect, incompetent, or illegally made these allegations, they changed their denial reason. After changing their denial reason after this being their reason for 7 months, I contacted the BBB. They said they will no longer discuss the policy directly with me because I contacted the BBB. They did not reply to the BBB's request for documents and now they will not reply to either IDOI where they are headquartered or NCDOI where I live. They have about 7 days to reply and have so far passed on 25 days to reply. Policy 50GJHT-102201
