Freedom Tax Relief (FTR) started in 2003, and is based in San Mateo, California. The company claims to resolve IRS debt in a quick and affordable manner. Customers with $10,000 or more in IRS debt can work with FTR's tax attorneys and licensed tax agents to lessen the debt, create a payment plan, and more. The company lacks membership with the industry's top professional associations.

The Good

  • Four-Step Process
  • Tax Solution Services
  • Customized Payment Plans

Four-Step Process

FTR works with a four-step process to resolve client tax debt:

  1. Initial Consultation: The initial consultation matches up each consumer with a tax consultant that works to best understand the consumer's unique situation. The session also goes over the smartest way to solve the tax problem, and indicates if the consumer meets all company guidelines.
  2. Immediate Action: After consumers qualify with FTR, the company will send the IRS a Letter of Representation, and a Power of Attorney form. Once the IRS receives and processes the documents, Freedom Tax Relief will take over in dealing with the IRS.
  3. Tax Relief Solutions: The company sets out to resolve the tax issue, and the client prepares all supporting necessary documents-like pay stubs, bank statements, and 401K statements. Once all required documentation is gathered, and back taxes are prepared and filed, all tax resolution documents are submitted to the IRS.
  4. Offer/Negotiation: FTR's team of financial experts will make sure that everything is correctly submitted to the IRS, in hopes that the client's offer in compromise, installment agreement, or alternative tax relief solution is accepted.

Tax Solution Services

Customers come to FTR for help with a variety of tax services. The company assists with the following:

  • IRS Offer in Compromise
  • IRS Installment Agreement
  • IRS Tax Levy, and Garnishment Release
  • Filing Late IRS Tax Returns
  • IRS Payroll Tax Debt
  • IRS Tax Penalties
  • Innocent Spouse Relief
  • Currently Not Collectable
  • Tax Relief Alternatives (payment agreement, settlement, discharge, expiration, or abatement)

FTR utilizes a team of enrolled agents and tax attorneys to help clients with tax issues. It does not seem that company works with CPAs. An FTR phone representative stated that the company does not service Colorado. Additionally, it does not appear the company offers tax audit, asset seizure, bankruptcy, tax lien, or un-filed state tax assistance.

Customized Payment Plans

The company works with clients to create a payment plan that is customized specifically to the client's financial situation. Program fees can be spread out over months. Though the website does not list any information on fees and costs, customers have claimed the company charges around 12-20 percent of the total debt enrolled.

The Bad

  • No Money-Back Guarantee
  • 10-Minute Consultation
  • No Pricing Information
  • Not Accredited
  • Minimum Debt Requirement
  • No Educational Resources

No Money-Back Guarantee

Customers who are unsatisfied with FTR's services cannot get a full refund. In fact, the company doesn't advertise any kind of satisfaction or money-back guarantee. Most leading companies in the industry offer a refund guarantee for unsatisfied customers.

10-Minute Consultation

A free consultation is standard in the industry; however, FTR limits its consultations to 10 minutes, which can make the experience seem rushed. Typically, many companies offering a free consultation do not put a time limit on it.

No Pricing Information

FTR does not provide any information on costs or prices. This is most likely because the company does not operate on a flat-rate-fee basis, and each service and situation differs in pricing.

Not Accredited

It is also worth noting that the company lacks accreditations, and is not a member of the American Society of Tax Problem Solvers (ASTPS), the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), or the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA).

Minimum Debt Requirement

The website states that customers must have at least $10,000 in IRS debt to take advantage of FTR's services.

No Educational Resources

It is helpful to offer educational resources for clients that want to learn more about tax situations. FTR does not provide an educational blog or financial tax articles. This would be especially useful to provide since the consultation is limited to 10 minutes. Additionally, no calculators or estimation tools are offered. Top companies often have some type of calculator that explains how much money customers can save, or indicates which tax programs they qualify for.

The Bottom Line

Freedom Tax Relief has been in the industry for over a decade and offers clients a variety of tax solution services, including currently not collectible status, levies and garnishments, installment agreements, filing late taxes, and more. Customers can take advantage of a 10-minute consultation, and work with a team of enrolled agents and tax attorneys to reduce the problem debt. The company is not a member of key industry professional associations, and does not work with a money-back guarantee. Additionally, there are no CPAs on staff, and FTR does not appear to work with tax audit, asset seizure, or IRS appeal cases. Freedom Tax Relief has a lot of positive attributes, but is not a standout in the industry. We recommend exploring other, more accredited companies for tax relief services.

I used Freedom Tax Relief for a previous federal and state tax situation. I had tried other companies for the same situation but FTR was the best. It was always relatively easy to get a representative on the phone to recieve an update on my situation. I wish they have returned e-mails faster than they did.

Freedom tax relief was the first back tax company I worked with they were very understanding of my situation and although they couldn't solve all of my back text problems they handle the peace and then handed it off to a sister company it's a great service

I paid them $3600 and they did nothing to resolve my tax issue. That money could have gone to the IRS to pay down some of my bill. Now I still have an outstanding amount to pay and it has gained interest. I would not use freedom tax relief ever again.

This company is hard to understand as it does not have a website associated with it. It is a little sketchy because I am trusting my taxes and potential jail time for a company that does not even have a website. You can only call them. Don't recommend it. USE name brand companies no matter the cost.
