Enphase Energy is the largest supplier of microinverter solar and battery systems in the world. The global energy technology company was founded in 2006 and is diligently working to create a more sustainable and reliable future for everyone. Enphase Energy creates inverter products that can benefit large-scale and residential solar projects bringing its advanced technology and solar solutions to the table.

Two years after its founding, Enphase Energy began shipping its initial micorinverter products. In just three short years, Enphase Energy had sold over one million microinverters to clients all over the world. Most recently, Enphase Energy launched its seventh generation series of microinverter products, known as the IQ series, which has proven to be a worldwide success. In 2022, Enphase Energy released the IQ8 microinverter.

Aside from inverter manufacturing, Enphase technology also offers solutions in the solar storage and software industries. The solar battery most recently released by Enphase is the IQ 10 (also known as the Enphase Encharge system). With Enphase microinverters, clients can bridge the gap between solar panels and the photovoltaic solar system.

The Good

  • Microinverter Benefits
  • Individual Panel Level Monitoring
  • Limitless Voltage
  • Equipment Warranty
  • Compatible Energy Storage Solutions

Microinverter Benefits

Most of the inverter products on the market fall into two categories: string inverters and hybrid inverters. Enphase Energy inverter products are a system type all on its own — the microinverter. There are a number of benefits associated with utilizing a microinverter over other equipment types.

Traditional inverters are connected to an array of solar panels. From there, the inverters are responsible for converting the direct current (DC) power that is collected from the sun and turning it into usable energy known as the alternating current (AC) power. Microinverters still perform this function, but they are smaller units that are connected to each solar panel in the system.

That means that if a panel or a microinverter fails or is not functioning properly, the system will continue to produce and store electricity through the functioning solar panels. With traditional inverters, when one panel or inverter goes dark, the entire array stops producing power.

Individual Panel Level Monitoring

Since microinverters are individually connected to solar panels in a system, there is the ability to enhance monitoring performance. With traditional inverters, monitoring is available but on a more whole view approach. Homeowners can see how the entire system is working as a whole, but not individual equipment and connected parts.

With Enphase microinverters, homeowners will be able to individual monitoring panels which allows for immediate detection of malfunctioning solar modules. This keeps the system performing at its designated level saving more money in the long run.

Limitless Voltage

With string inverters and systems, there are voltage limits. Panels cannot outproduce what the inverter is capable of turning energy into alternating current. Fortunately for Enphase Energy buyers, this is not a concern.

Enphase microinverters are not restricted by voltage capabilities, so clients do not need to concern themselves with the number of panels installed in the array. This makes life extremely straightforward for installers potentially saving on installation costs. Additionally, with no voltage limits, Enpahse microinverters work with essentially any brand of solar panel. That is something many inverters cannot replicate.

Equipment Warranty

Most inverter manufacturers will back products through an equipment or performance warranty for a maximum of ten years. Considering the costs and the intricacies of the Enphase microinverter, the company has worked to bolster coverage and provide clients with additional peace of mind.

Enphase microinverters are backed by a 25-year equipment warranty, which is easily one of the best and most comprehensive in the industry. Most buyers will be hard pressed to find a warranty with better coverage.

Compatible Energy Storage Solutions

Homeowners looking to be more energy independent and considering the benefits of solar energy storage may also want to consider Enphase. Enphase offers a number of energy storage solutions that are compatible with its microinverters. Not all inverter manufacturers also supply storage solutions, but Enphase Energy has the bandwidth and technology to provide just that.

The Bad

  • Upfront Costs

Upfront Costs

The only real downside of Enphase Energy microinverters is the initial cost it takes to purchase the units and have them installed. Depending on how many microinverter units will be needed for system connection, homeowners can expect to pay anywhere from $145 to $242 per unit. Depending on how large the system and home are, this could add anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 to the overall solar system cost.

This additional cost is substantial compared to string and hybrid inverters that will only add an additional $1,500 to $3,000 to the overall cost on average. There are performance benefits to utilizing a microinverter, but it does come at a price.

The Bottom Line

Enphase Energy manufactures one of the best microinverter products available on the solar market today. There are a number of benefits with utilizing microinverters over the traditional string or hybrid inverter allowing for continuous operation.

Additionally, microinverters allow for individual panel level monitoring instead of simply whole system metrics giving homeowners more insight into key pieces of equipment performance. With Enphase Energy microinverters, there is no limit on voltage which is not the case with other inverter products. The equipment warranty comes with a 25-year warranty which is one of the longest in the industry.

The only real downside to Enphase Energy microinverters is the upfront costs, which has discouraged a number of homeowners from having the products installed. Homeowners will have to pay per unit, which can add an additional $5,000 to $10,000 to the overall installation price.

Homeowners considering Enphase Energy microinverters will enjoy all the benefits of a high performing inverter with the added features of individual panel monitoring and improved performance specifications. This is not the product for homeowners looking to install the cheapest inverter solution on the market.

My Enphase solar inverter is easy to use. Things are working smoothly. I don't get updates as often, because it's not connected to wi-fi, it's updating through cellular.

Installation used micro inverters and combiner panel. Battery was by Tesla so their panel controlled the entire system so I can't speak to that. Installation went well and the micro-inverters are working w/o issue. Had to reset the enphase reporting system after a power outage but the system itself worked w/o issue through out. Only think I lost for a bit was the reporting function. Since I have battery I was the only one with power when a car took out a power pole and SCE took three tries to finally (fingers crossed) fix the damage.

RUN!!! Purchased a unit 11/22. By 4/23 the communications module went offline. Over 15 phone calls, each one taking no less than 20 minutes until their techs put it on line, only to have to do it all again the next day. A complaint to BBB got a supervisor to call me and tell me the unit was not under warranty. I told her I would also file with the Florida Attorney General and they could figure out if it was under warranty. A week later they finally sent a tech out who said “Oh, your comms unit is out.” They lie, confuse, a deny. A TOTAL SCAM

When I went solar on my last house, the company I was dealing with recommended the Enphase inverter. I never had a single problem with it, as long as there were no power outages it worked perfectly and I saved lots of money after installing the solar panels and inverter. I have high regard for this company.

Overall, Enphase is a good company, but there were Quality Issues with the Early inverters. The best part about them is the monitoring service. The worst part is the damn microinverters (D-180's and R340s) have a life of about 10 years on average. For me, half of the inverters failed in the first 12 years. Although they were replaced under the original 15 year warantee, the others are just waiting to fail. Plus every time they fail, there is a $300 service call to get the new inverters replaced. Enphase is not the installer, they are the provider. The original installer RGE is not responding to calls. I have to find my own Solar Technician. This is not exactly what I expected when I signed up 12 years ago.

I have an Enphase system and even though my SOALR System is NOT yet connected to NetMetering, the ENPHASE app is PHENOMENAL! Displays solar energy being generated and even shows which panels are generating the most at different times during the day. I had a small issue with connectivity and the customer service provided was AMAZING! They walked me through the steps to connect and I was reconnected in a matter of minutes.

They will find a way not to do warranty. They did not honor warranty because the have a clause that says the inverters can not me moved to another house. All of my 70 m215 inverters have the main waterproofing material coming apart and falling out. But sorry they were moved so they offered no help . I should of had 13 more years of warranty, now I have none. Makes no sense to me. So Stay Away from Enphase!!!!

The panels have performed for 7 years well. As proposed. I've needed 2 replacement panels which were supplied promptly. However, the installer has since gone out of business. Getting someone to service the system is left to me. Their recommended service is over 2 hours away and high cost just to show.
