For years, Panasonic was a behind the scenes manufacturer. The company operated as one of the largest battery cell manufacturers in the world. After producing battery cells for other suppliers, Panasonic decided to go into the business as the recognizable brand.

In 2019, Panasonic launched its first residential battery storage product, the Panasonic EverVolt. The main focus when designing the EverVolt was to create a flexible and modular product that could be used in a number of circumstances.

The Panasonic EverVolt has become increasingly popular in areas where utility companies have taken away net metering capabilities or drastically reduced them. In these circumstances, it is no longer worth it to homeowners to send unused energy back to the grid as the financial and economical benefits are significantly impacted in a negative way. The Panasonic EverVolt was designed for these situations as it is one of the more malleable solar battery systems on the market.

The overall design of the Panasonic EverVolt is geared towards day-to-day use and its features are on best display when coupled with a solar system. For homes where a solar system is simply not producing enough energy, the stored energy in the battery can provide financial relief instead of having to purchase electricity from utility companies.

The Good

  • Coupled Configurations and Inverter
  • Retrofit Capabilities
  • Standby Power Without Solar
  • Battery Models

Coupled Configurations and Inverter

Panasonic EverVolt products have AC and DC versions. This allows homeowners to have these systems installed regardless of whether or not a solar system was recently installed or they have had it for years.

Additionally, the Panasonic EverVolt comes with an integrated inverter providing the additional energy independence many homeowners are looking for. Rarely do battery solutions provide AC and DC coupled components as well as an integrated inverter, but the Panasonic EverVolt offers both.

Retrofit Capabilities

One of the most beneficial aspects of the Panasonic EverVolt product is its malleability. Many solar batteries and storage systems are modular in nature, meaning additional units can be added for increased power or storage capacity. The Panasonic EverVolt goes above and beyond in this area with its “retrofit” capabilities.

Regardless of when a solar system was installed or what company manufactured the solar system, the Panasonic EverVolt can seamlessly pair with and operate in conjunction with these systems. Most batteries are designed to operate at maximum capacity when paired with its own solar system, but the Panasonic EverVolt can retrofit to nearly every system.

Standby Power Without Solar

Typically, homeowners are only looking to install a battery or storage backup system if they already have a solar system installed. In fact, most of the batteries within this industry will only work in conjunction with an installed solar system.

The Panasonic EverVolt sets itself apart in this area as the unit itself can still provide standby power, with or without an installed solar system. Homeowners without solar panels can still rely on the Panasonic EveVolt to provide several hours of backup power stored from the grid during power outages. Appliances can continue to operate through the power stored by the Panasonic EverVolt.

Battery Models

Keeping in line with its flexibility, retrofit capabilities, and modular features, Panasonic has worked to provide a number of options to homeowners looking for battery and storage backup solutions. To meet a wide range of homeowner needs, Panasonic provides four different systems to choose from:

  • EverVolt 2.0 Home Battery Storage System
  • EverVolt SmartGate
  • EverVolt AC-Coupled Home Battery Storage
  • EverVolt DC-Coupled Home Battery Storage

Most suppliers will require homeowners to simply purchase more add-ons or units to make up for additional needs. While Panasonic provides this as an option to clients, it also offers multiple unit choices to ensure that homeowners get the power and capacity desired.

The Bad

  • High Cost
  • Undisclosed Depth of Discharge

High Cost

Battery and storage backup systems are not cheap. They typically run thousands of dollars and additional installation costs can contribute to the overall cost.

However, the Panasonic EverVolt cost seems substantially more steep than other comparable products on the market. Including installation, the most basic Panasonic EverVolt system starts around $15,000.

There are programs and installation deals that can help lower this cost, but all in, homeowners can expect to spend thousands of dollars to access the technology of the Panasonic EverVolt.

Undisclosed Depth of Discharge

The depth of discharge metric displays the percentage of a battery’s energy that is discharged in comparison to the overall battery capacity. This is a key performance metric many researching customers are interested in as it helps determine the overall quality and ability of a solar battery and storage backup system.

Almost all battery manufacturers disclose the depth of discharge percentage. However, the Panasonic EverVolt depth of discharge percentage is undisclosed, making it difficult to determine this specific key performance metric.

The Bottom Line

Panasonic EverVolt provides one of the more flexible battery solutions available on today’s market. With both AC and DC coupled configurations as well as a storage integrated inverter, Panasonic EverVolt can work with almost all solar systems.

Most solar batteries are designed to operate best with its partnered solar panels. The Panasonic EverVolt was designed to work with and retrofit to systems previously installed and from varying manufacturers. Even if a homeowner does not have a solar system, the Panasonic EverVolt can store energy that can be used during blackout circumstances.

Lastly, there are four different Panasonic EverVolt products to choose from allowing homeowners to perfectly cater their home’s needs to ensure that storage requirements and standards are met.

Before purchasing a Panasonic EverVolt system, prospective clients should be aware of some of the negative aspects associated with the unit. The cost to have fully installed for the most basic Panasonic EverVolt battery system starts around $15,000.

This can be reduced with tax incentives or when coupled with a solar system installation, but the price is rather steep compared to comparable models on the market. Panasonic has also failed to disclose the depth of discharge percentage, a key metric used to determine the efficiency of a system.

Homeowners who have had a solar system installed for a number of years and are looking into adding supplemental storage and battery backup should consider a Panasonic EverVolt product. The system is designed to meet these complex needs and still perform efficiently.
