GEICO offers its members a chance to add onto their current auto and homeowners policies with its Personal Umbrella Insurance. GEICO states that its policies can add $1 million in coverage to several different policies and may cost less than raising the limits on other policies individually.

The Good

  • Professional Liability Insurance
  • Coverage
  • Getting an Online Quote

Professional Liability Insurance

When GEICO's Professional Liability Insurance (PLI), also known as Errors & Omissions Insurance (E&O), is combined with the general liability insurance, business owners get extra coverage. GEICO understands that business owners face risks every single day and aims to help by providing extensive protection through an insurance policy.

GEICO’s professional liability insurance commonly covers:

  • Alleged Mistakes or Negligence
  • Copyright Infringement
  • Personal Injury

These items may be covered:

  • Previously Performed Services
  • Defense Costs
  • Temporary Staff and Independent Contractors

Business owners who provide customers or clients with a service are likely in need of professional liability insurance coverage. GEICO offers a wide range of policies designed for companies in all industries.

Coverage

GEICO's umbrella covers the policyholder, their spouse, any relative or dependent living with them, and a friend or relative who borrows their car.

Getting an Online Quote

GEICO members can quickly and easily get an umbrella rate quote online with one of GEICO’s licensed professionals. In order to provide members with an accurate quote, GEICO asks whether anyone in your household owns any of the vehicles listed below, if they have liability coverage for them, and the coverage amounts:

  • Private passenger vehicles
  • Classic or antique cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Golf carts
  • RVs
  • Other specialty vehicles
  • Boats or personal watercraft

GEICO may also ask the following questions:

  • Does anyone in the household have personal use of a company vehicle?
  • Has any driver in the household had a traffic conviction within the last 5 years?
  • Are you and/or your spouse the sole owners of all vehicles?

GEICO will need to know about these other insurance policies and liability limits:

  • Homeowners, renters, or condo/co-op policies
  • If members own additional properties and info on the homeowner or landlord policies on those homes

Members may also be asked about the following:

  • Occupation (including whether the member holds a public office)
  • Other umbrella insurance
  • Liability Claims
  • Civil or Criminal Charges

Some insurers do not offer an online quote or application process, so GEICO's convenient offering makes it stand out from others.

The Bad

  • Limited Customer Reviews
  • Requirements

Limited Customer Reviews

GEICO personal insurance reviews are limited on BestCompany.com. Due to this low review count, insight on the customer experience is minimal.

Requirements

Members will need a GEICO auto insurance policy to qualify for GEICO umbrella insurance in every state except New Hampshire and New York.

Members will need to have and maintain certain minimum liability limits on their auto and homeowners policies (and their boat policy if applicable) to qualify for GEICO's Personal Umbrella Policy.

Listed below are the minimum liability limits for each of the policies:

  • Auto Insurance Policy — $300,000 person/$300,000 occurrence (bodily injury), $100,000 (property damage) or $250,000 person/$500,000 occurrence (bodily injury), $100,000 (property damage)

  • Homeowners Insurance Policy — $300,000 liability

  • Boat Insurance Policy (if applicable) — Boats under 26 feet and under 50 hp: $100,000 liability; Boats 26 feet or longer, or 50 hp and up: $300,000 liability

The Bottom Line

A Personal Umbrella Policy offers GEICO members protection that goes above and beyond their current auto and homeowners policies. If you're a GEICO customer already and need an umbrella policy, further research into GEICO's personal insurance coverage options is worthwhile.

Members can easily get a quote online and speak with one of GEICO's licensed professionals. GEICO works hard to help its customers have a safe and secure financial future and an umbrella policy from GEICO can help members protect their assets with additional liability coverage. However, members will need to meet the requirements before they can sign up for an umbrella policy.

I've used Geico for the past 5 years or so! It was a good company. They are helpful. I could just get a better deal with USAA so I switched over.
