Hinge vs Tinder

Hinge and Tinder are some of the most popular dating apps in the United States. These dating apps were released within a few months of each other. Tinder quickly grew in popularity and has an audience size six times larger than Hinge’s audience. Tinder has a reputation as a hookup app for casual dating. Tinder users decide whether to swipe right or left based on a few photos and a short Tinder bio. While Hinge might not be as popular as Tinder, Hinge offers unique features that make it an effective platform to find serious relationships and make meaningful connections.

When comparing Hinge vs. Tinder, we looked at top considerations such as sign-up process, device compatibility, premium features, profiles and matches, audience size, user reviews, and security. This is easily the best dating app out there. Very few things are behind a pay wall. The preferences are great. They do an amazing job with vetting profiles and removing fakes. and the user interface is really nice to look at.

I got banned before I even finished filling out my profile. Literally banned within minutes of them clearing my payment. No reason, no excuse, nothing. Just "you violated our TOS". I filed an appeal and two weeks in nothing. Not even a refund. WTF? Stay away from this app. is the only advise I can offer. I didn't even get to see if anyone was compatible. Complete waste of money. Use an alternative like Bumble... PS you can't even get a refund if you violate their TOS. You can't even find out why you violated their nebulous TOS. Total ripoff...

I thoroughly enjoyed using tinder. I do think it is easier for women than men to find matches. Most of the time I would use it to hook up and found that matching wasn’t to difficult when I made my intentions clear. Be open and honest about what you want and set boundaries. You’ll be amazed at who you could meet - I met my husband through tinder!

Subject: Frustration with Tinder’s Match Availability and Subscription Issues Dear Tinder Administrators, I am writing to express my frustration and disappointment with the lack of matches despite having a paid subscription. It appears that the algorithm offers matches freely before subscribing but significantly reduces them afterward. This practice feels unethical and goes against consumer principles. I urge you to address this issue and provide a fair resolution that prioritizes user satisfaction and experience. Thank you, Mohamed Cheddadi

The Final Word

Signup Process (Winner: Tinder)

Setting up a Hinge profile takes a little longer than setting up a Tinder account. Tinder However, time spent signing up and answering questions will improve your chance of finding a suitable match. Hinge has additional sign-up questions to understand the user and what they are seeking.

New Hinge users start the sign-up process by selecting their six profile photos from Instagram, Facebook, and/or their camera roll. Users also answer personal questions related to politics, personality, and physical appearance. Hinge also includes icebreakers to encourage meaningful conversations. You will be asked to pick and answer three icebreaker questions during signup.

Tinder has an easier signup process than Hinge.

Device Compatibility (Winner: Tinder)

Tinder and Hinge apps are available for download on Android and iOS devices. Tinder also offers a desktop version on the Tinder Web. All you have to do is login with your account information, turn on location, and verify your email address. The Tinder Web offers a work mode that allows app users to remove distractions while working and just back to the app during breaks. Swiping, matching, and messaging are all available through the desktop version.

Hinge has not yet released an official desktop version. For the best experience, users should stick to the mobile Hinge app.

Tinder users have more options for accessing and using the online dating app.

Premium Features (Winner: Hinge)

Tinder and Hinge offer a free version for users who want to test out the app before upgrading to a paid subscription. Tinder has two premium services including Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold. The main difference between the two premium subscriptions is Tinder Gold allows users to see who “liked them” and to view 4–10 top picks daily. Tinder Plus gives you access to the following features:

  • Ad-free browsing
  • Unlimited likes
  • Unlimited rewinds
  • 5 super likes per day
  • 1 boost per month
  • Passport
  • 1 top pick per day

Hinge offers its own set of premium services to encourage successful connections. With Hinge premium, you have access to the following features:

  • Advanced filter setting (family plans, politics, education, etc.)
  • Unlimited likes
  • View all your profile likes on one page
  • Chat with Hinge experts

At first glance, you may think that Tinder offers a better premium dating service. However, Hinge offers a few features in its free version that Tinder makes you pay for. Hinge allows free users to view profile likes and interact with users from any location in the world.

Hinge offers helpful premium and free features that improve your chances of finding a meaningful relationship.

Profiles and Matches (Winner: Hinge)

Tinder is commonly known as a hookup app for casual encounters. Tinder does not ask users to identify their intention or state it in their profiles. Other than location-based suggestions, Tinder does not have an algorithm that matches users by interests or compatibility. Many users end up downloading and deleting the app multiple times as they search for a suitable match.

Hinge lives by its motto, “Designed to be deleted.” The dating app pairs users based on their compatibility and overall intent. Hinge has its own research lab devoted to improving user experience and success. The Hinge Lab looks over app data and asks for user feedback to find areas of improvement.

Hinge’s focus on helping users find meaningful connections makes it a popular app for meeting potential matches.

Audience Size (Winner: Tinder)

Tinder was released in September 2012 and quickly grew in popularity among singles. By 2014, Tinder recorded over a billion “swipes” per day. In 2017, Tinder’s revenue skyrocketed after the release of its premium subscription option — Tinder Gold.

Tinder is currently available in over 190 countries with over 7.86 million U.S. users according to statistica.com. Users seeking a large selection of potential matches should try out Tinder. Tinder is the most popular dating app in the United States with Bumble in second place. Users in rural areas may have the most success trying out Tinder as opposed to other online dating sites.

The Hinge dating app was released a few months after Tinder. Hinge did not experience the same membership growth as Tinder. Hinge currently has an audience size of around 1.21 million U.S. users.

Tinder has significantly more users than Hinge.

User Reviews (Winner: Tinder)

Tinder is currently the top-ranked online dating site according to BestCompany.com. Tinder has an overall star rating of 3.4 out of 5. Satisfied users love how easy it is to meet new people and sign up for the app.

Customer Review: Ellie

"I met my husband on here!! Tinder has options for everyone and what they are looking for! It’s super helpful in finding what you’d like and making you feel safe throughout the whole process. I highly recommend to anyone looking for anything. "

Hinge does not have enough customer reviews to find patterns in the user experiences. We cannot make final recommendations without more conclusive data.

As the top-ranked company for online dating, Tinder outshines Hinge in its quantity of reviews and review scores.

Security (Winner: Tie)

Tinder and Hinge require verification with a phone number or Facebook account. Neither of the dating apps has additional verification or safety features.

Recommendation

After taking a close look at both dating apps, we recommend starting with Tinder if you are seeking a casual relationship or a large number of potential options. Users looking for a serious relationship may find more success on the Hinge dating app. Because Hinge and Tinder offer free versions, users can test out both apps to see which app is a better fit. Individuals who try both apps will find that the two platforms have many similarities such as swiping through profiles and sending messages. The biggest difference will be the type of users and the intent.
