The University of Wisconsin is a public research university founded in 1848 when Wisconsin achieved statehood. It was the first public university in the state and has grown to include a number of schools, colleges, and campuses. Today, the University of Wisconsin has over 43,000 students (29,302 undergraduates and 11,904 postgraduates) and over 2,220 academic staff members. While the university has multiple campus locations and a number of degree options, it is lacking core major programs.
