The University of Arizona, also referred to as U of A, was chartered in 1885 by the city of Tucson. Originally Tucson was not pleased with receiving the university allocation, but when no other city could accommodate the institution, they decided to allocate land for a campus. It was the first university in the Arizona territory and is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents. The University of Arizona is classified as a public flagship research university.
