Northeastern University is a global educational institution founded in 1898. The education provided by NU is developed on principles that lead to higher engagement with the world. Engaging students with the world around them creates a unique educational experience that finds strength in a comprehensive range of undergraduate programs. NU also offers advanced degrees from three on-campus locations. NU aims to help students obtain knowledge that translates directly into the professional world while allowing for a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. The school has physical locations on both the West and East Coast of the United States allowing students to learn from faculty that has experience in a multitude of markets.

The Good

  • Flexible Courses, Tuition
  • Diverse Degrees

Flexible Courses, Tuition

NU has a number of distinct advantages. The University offers bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees at reasonable prices and on a flexible schedule. The per credit hour cost for undergraduate degrees starts at $369, which former students claim is a reasonable price for the quality of education that students receive from NU.

Diverse Degrees

The physical campuses are located in Boston, Charlotte, and Seattle giving NU a solid base in three of the major cities on both coasts. That gives special strength to an online degree. The more familiar large markets are to the institution a student attends the more likely they are to be impressed by the degree. Degrees are broken down into the following colleges:
  • College of Arts, Media, and Design
  • D'Amore-McKim School of Business
  • College of Computer and Information Sciences
  • College of Engineering
  • Bouve College of Health Sciences
  • School of Law
  • College of Professional Studies
  • College of Science
  • College of Social Sciences and Humanities
NU is driven to help their students meet the needs of the world. This is a great drive for online students looking for a degree to be applicable to the workforce. A sense of fulfillment and accomplishment can come from getting real world, applicable experience.

The Bad

  • In-Person Attendance Can Be Required
  • Low Acceptance Rate

In-Person Attendance Can be Required

There are a few different aspects of the education Northeastern provides that prospective students should be aware of. The advanced degrees are offered through the online courses, but there are also claims that students must attend one of their three campuses. This is not likely possible for a student that is working full-time while attending classes. Other possible concerns include:
  • Varying tuition costs depending on enrolled program
  • Not all degree levels and certificates available

Low Acceptance Rate

NU provides a high quality and flexible education, but the accessibility is less than desired. An acceptance rate just over 30% means that most students aren't going to get the opportunity they are hoping for.

The Bottom Line

A fulfilling education experience is what NU provides its students. With lots of real-world learning, the Northeastern education helps prepare students to become contributors in the workforce. Helping students to reach their potential is one of the greatest purposes of NU. By providing students with options and assistance the University has proven to be a great place for a number of students to attend. Interested students will need to apply online prior to an enrollment decision being reached:
  1. Review application deadlines
  2. Create a Common Application account
  3. Fill out online application
  4. Submit application and all required documentation
