California Coast University was founded in 1973 with the intent of reaching the student who, because of location, profession or time commitments, did not allow them to attend the traditional university. The programs at CCU are directed to the mid-career adult that is self-motivated and an independent learner. The average student at CCU is 41 years old and works full time. Over 80% of the students have 3-15 years of experience in their field of study before they enroll at CCU. The pace of the course work is set by the student and supervised by a faculty member. This means that the desired degree is earned completely at the pace of the student but usually completed in 1-3 years.

California Coast University is completely online and targets the mature professional. The vast majority of their students have prior college/work experience so the courses are self-directed, self-paced and independent. Time limits are in place so a course cannot drag on forever.- Courses are self-paced but a requirement of completing two courses per year is mandatory and a time limit of 5 years is in place to finish desired degree. Ten years for a doctorate.
- Course work can begin at any time. There are no quarters or semesters.
- Three different payment plans in place to help students with the cost. No interest is charged.
