uShip is not your ordinary moving company. In fact, it's not a moving company at all.
uShip is an online marketplace that connects customers directly with truck drivers who have extra space in their trucks — making it cheaper and easier to ship large items.
uShip allows users to make listings to transport a variety of items, including but not limited to the following:
To get started, all you need to do is create a listing. Next, you'll input your moving timeframe, list of items that need to be moved, number of boxes, measurements of large pieces of furniture, and the level of service required. Once that's done, you'll either open it up for bids from truck drivers or moving companies, or you can offer a price (and wait to see if someone accepts it). Once someone makes a bid or accepts your offer, uShip will notify you through the website or the mobile app.
If you receive multiple offers, it's up to you to choose the right driver or company to hire. We recommend checking out uShip's driver review pages to ensure you're hiring a trustworthy candidate, but ultimately the decision comes down to whom you're comfortable working with.
Moving a piano, car, or even just a large piece of furniture comes at a price. Unfortunately, many standard moving companies will drastically increase their rates for these types of items, putting a lot of stress on a tight budget. The nice thing about uShip is that when you create a listing, you can choose how much you're willing to pay to have your item moved, or you can receive multiple quotes from different drivers or companies and choose the best rate.
The fact that there is no set price for certain items is great for anyone looking to save some money as it could potentially get you a great deal. Instead of being told what you're going to pay to move your heavy items, you get to choose. Also, you aren't rushed to make a decision. If you don't want to accept any of the offers at first (or no one bites at your offered price), give it a few days to see if anything changes.
Thanks to websites like eBay Motors and Craigslist that allow people to buy and sell a car without a middleman, more vehicles are being transported all over the country. If you need to ship a vehicle, uShip is an excellent option. The company's website includes a "cost to ship" page where you can input your vehicle's information (year, make, model, etc.) to determine how much it will cost to ship your car across the country, state-to-state, locally, or internationally. uShip even breaks it down so you can see the company (or driver) that offers the lowest rate, best value, or the one with the highest customer rating.
Anyone who goes through uShip for their shipping needs gets the "Ship with Confidence" Guarantee. This guarantee compensates clients up to $500 if any items are damaged or lost. Also, the company will reimburse clients up to $500 if they made a payment and the services are not rendered.
Keep in mind that you must follow uShip's Safe Shipping Guide to be eligible for this guarantee.
It's not common for moving companies to disclose pricing upfront. Mainly because moving inherently comes with a lot of variables: How many boxes do you plan on using? Do you plan on packing the items yourself or hiring someone else to do it? Are you moving across the street or the country?
Something unique about uShip is the company's attempt to be as transparent as possible. On the website, uShip has a page that discloses client listings, including what they moved, the distance of the move, how much it cost, and more. Of course, no personal details are revealed.
For example, one of the posts is from a client who moved out of a one bedroom apartment in Northern California and moved to Southern California. The total distance of the move was around 420 miles, and the client received three quotes. The client declined two of the quotes and accepted the last quote for $2,000.
This is just one example. The website includes thousands of these profiles. If you want a ballpark number on how much your move will cost you, it doesn't get much better than this.
uShip is not always the most practical way to move — especially for those with a specific timeframe and/or a lot of stuff to move.
uShip's business model is all about utilizing the extra space in trucks and helping eliminate economic waste. Since your belongings are being shipped in the extra space of a truck that's already got an established route, you don't get to cherry-pick the date or the amount of space available. Instead, you simply have to wait and see if someone can move your stuff within your timeframe.
When our research team scrolled through uShip's listings, we came across several that had been live for days (some even weeks) with little interaction — meaning there weren't any bids. So, even if you create a listing, there is no guarantee that you'll get an offer.
uShip doesn't charge or require a subscription fee for basic Shipper (personal or business), Broker, or Carrier accounts. However, that doesn't mean there aren't any fees. If you read through the company's user agreement, you'll see that uShip may charge the following fees:
Nearly all moving companies have fees, so this is not unusual. But, we do recommend that you speak with a company representative or read the agreement thoroughly before signing any paperwork. That way, you are informed about what you're paying for and why.
One important thing to remember is that uShip is not a moving company itself but a marketplace that connects customers with drivers who have extra space in their trucks.
uShip is an excellent resource for anyone who needs to move one or two large items but can’t fill an entire truckload — and doesn't want to pay for an entire truck. It might not be the best option if you're looking to relocate and need to move out of your three+ bedroom home since there's no way to specify the amount of extra space in the truck. However, if you happen to get lucky and there's a driver with extra space (and who happens to be traveling a similar route), then it's a great way to move items for cheap.
Consumers should also appreciate uShip showing its customers' listings and what bids were offered (and accepted). It's challenging to give a ballpark figure when it comes to moving costs, mostly because pricing in the moving industry is extremely dynamic and situational. But the fact that uShip has found some way to give customers an idea of what they could expect to pay is incredible.
