Habitat Furnishings makes two bed-in-a-box mattress alternatives, an adjustable air bed mattress and a waterbed mattress. The company is owned by United States WaterMattress. It is owned by a group of mattress engineers that has been designing these unique beds for 30 years. The Baltimore-based company began with water beds and eventually designed its adjustable air bed system. Each mattress is hand-built and ships from its own factory. Its products are competitively priced compared with its competitors.
It has many years of design and manufacturing experience in this industry; the Habitat Furnishings Ascend Bed debuted in 2007. The Ascend Bed gives even the pickiest sleepers the ability to control how their mattress feels. If you sleep with a partner, chances are you have different sleep preferences, and this air bed system allows you both to create your own customized bed.
The Habitat Ascend Digital Air Bed uses memory foam, in addition to natural latex for a soft, plush comfort level. You can precisely control the level of support you need by adjusting the pressure in each air chamber beneath your body. The quilted bamboo duvet top sleeps cool and ventilates the mattress. It is available in sizes from Twin XL to California King and starts at $2,699.
Habitat Furnishings also manufactures and sells the Mirage® WaterMattress. Made entirely in the United States, it is a “softside” water mattress, meaning it is a complete mattress that requires no exterior wood frame or rails. The Habitat Furnishings system is designed to sit directly on top of an existing solid top platform or foundation, and can be purchased as a mattress only unit, or with its handcrafted solid top and upholstered foundations and metal frame.
It features waveless water chamber technology, so sleepers feel buoyant and pressure relief with minimal motion transfer and zero wave action. Customers should be aware that it does intentionally incorporate a small amount of “wave sensation.”
Habitat Furnishings includes a fill kit adapter with adapters to allow for easy filling from your bathroom sink or via a garden hose. If you ever need to empty the chamber you can also use the same fill kit to drain the mattress into a bathtub. Water conditioner is also provided. The Mirage® WaterMattress is available only in sizes Queen, King, and California King and starts at $2,399. Both Habitat Furnishings mattresses are available to be purchased on their own or as part of a set with foundation.
Habitat Furnishings conveniently sells extra component and replacement parts for its mattresses such as replacement remotes, air chambers, and pumps.
Getting a good night's rest is not one-size-fits-all. Habitat tries to combat this with their two customizable, and unique mattress offerings. Each combines air or water bed technology with foam layers of varying materials to make a hybrid mattress with unique qualities.
The Ascend Air Bed contains an air chamber made of a natural rubber, coupled with its plush-feeling memory and organic latex foam. The bed comes with two digital controllers (only one for a twin), allowing you to adjust the firmness on each side of the bed. If you share a bed, but each of you prefer a different comfort level for your sleeping surface, you can adjust.
The Mirage® WaterMattress offers customers a well-designed water bed with a quilted bamboo cover and support provided by natural latex foam.
Shipping is free in the continental United States; however, you have to contact the company about shipping rates for Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. Once you place your order, your mattress will ship within a day or so. All orders ship from Baltimore, Maryland.
Habitat offers a 90-night, no questions asked trial on its airbeds. There is a $99 return shipping charge which will be deducted from your refund.
Habitat offers a lifetime limited warranty. The "limited" part can mean different things coming from different companies. From Habitat, everything is covered 100 percent for the first two years of ownership. After that, you get 50 percent off all replacement components for the lifetime of your mattress.
This is not just a run-of-the-mill air mattress. They all cost over $1,000; however shipping in the United States is free, unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii.
There are no special financing options available currently. You must pay with a credit or debit card.
Habitat Furnishings doesn’t offer Full or standard Twin size airbeds, although Twin XL is available. Shoppers looking to use this mattress on a pre-existing Full or Twin size platform bed or foundation will be disappointed.
The company doesn't use any special mattress delivery service. The package ships via FedEx Freight in a giant 16" x 38" x 80" box. However, this service is a few steps above ground shipping, so you will get a phone call to schedule the delivery once the package arrives at the local delivery terminal.
Your package should ship from the Baltimore, Maryland factory within three business days and it takes an additional three to five business days to arrive depending on your location. Barring any issues, it will take upwards of two weeks to get to you.
As this isn't a mattress delivery service, there is no professional setup or removal of your old mattress available, free or otherwise. Setup takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and you can watch an assembly tutorial online for help or call the customer service team for setup assistance.
This hybrid air-foam mattress line from Habitat Furnishings offers enough options to appease any type of sleeper and the adjusting comfort level options should be a great help for uncertain shoppers.
These are expensive mattresses and the lack of financing options may deter some people shopping for a mattress online. However, if this is in your price range and you want to try Habitat Furnishings, its free shipping and 90-day trial make this a low-risk commitment. In addition, the warranty option for the lifetime of the mattress is a great perk.
