Founded in 2012, Tuft & Needle is a direct-to-consumer mattress company based in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2018, the company merged with Serta Simmons, but still operates as a separate brand.

Tuft & Needle currently offers three mattresses in common sizes Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King size:

  • The Original (Q $595), with a seven-inch supporting foam base layer and three inches of proprietary adaptive poly foam, infused with graphite and cooling gel. This open-cell foam provides pressure relief and bounce back more than a traditional memory foam mattress. It is moderately firm and meant to be for all types of sleepers, back, stomach, and side.
  • The Mint (Q $995), with a seven-inch support foam layer, three-inch adaptive foam with graphite, and a two-inch layer of adaptive foam/ceramic gel. The Mint is softer than the original, sleeps cooler, has more edge support, and is better for a side sleeper.
  • The Hybrid (Q $1,495), made with six layers of different materials, offers all of the benefits of the Tuft & Needle cooling ceramic gel foam combined with pocketed springs for a bouncier feel. This option combines T&N's specially formed cooling gel memory foam with the feel of a traditional mattress.

With only three mattress options, Tuft & Needle tries to offer comfort choices suitable for all sleeping positions. You can get a reasonably priced foam mattress or combine the benefits of the mattress brands' cooling and bouncy foam with the feel of a spring mattress. The Original is firmer than the soft Mint model and the Hybrid innerspring mattress is bouncier. They all are compatible with most bed foundations, either a box spring, slatted base, or most other options with support less than five inches apart.

In addition to these three mattresses, the company also sells its own line of compatible bed products including a bed frame, bedding, pillow, mattress topper, and mattress protector.

Tuft & Needle mattresses can be purchased online at tuftandneedle.com, at its seven Tuft & Needle mattress store locations, or through retail partners Amazon, Lowe's, and Crate&Barrel. Its products can also be purchased at select Walmart stores. The customer policies discussed below are solely based on where you buy it.

The Good

  • Free Shipping and Returns
  • 100-Night Sleep Trial
  • 10-Year Limited Warranty
  • Financing Available

Free Shipping and Returns

Tuft & Needle offers free ground shipping and returns in 48 states. Mattresses are compressed and shipped as a bed-in-a-box. Delivery takes one to seven business days. You could be sleeping on a new mattress, with free shipping within about a week.
Customers can upgrade to white glove delivery, with setup and old mattress removal for $150.
Same-day delivery is available for $50 for certain locations, like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Seattle.

100-Night Sleep Trial

To ensure that you are able to get a good night's sleep on your new bed, customers benefit from a 100-night risk-free trial. There is no return shipping or restocking fee. You get a full refund (less any shipping fees for customers outside of the contiguous United States or those who selected shipping service or speed upgrades). Even with this awesome trial policy, 95 percent of customers keep their mattresses.

Under the terms of the trial policy, if your mattress was shipped to Alaska or Hawaii, your original shipping charge is not refunded. This holds for the Original mattress, Mint foam mattress, and T&N hybrid mattress.

10-Year Limited Warranty

This company offers a ten-year warranty on its mattress models. This covers any defects in the mattress cover or mattress itself. It isn't pro-rated. The same policy is in place for all ten years.

Financing Available

Online customers buying a mattress can finance with Affirm's installment-based payment program. This is a great option if you don't necessarily want to put the purchase on credit, but you would like to spread it out. Affirm automatically deducts monthly installment payments from your bank account, as set up during your purchase.

You can even pre-qualify with a soft credit check that doesn't show up on your credit report.

The Bad

  • Firmness Options

Firmness Options

While some other direct-to-consumer mattress companies offer different feels from extra soft to extra firm, T&N focuses on options that are best for the majority of sleepers, rather than having multiple different firmness options on the same foam mattress.

This means that not everybody will be able to get a comfortable night's sleep on its mattresses. However, as long as you don't live in Alaska or Hawaii, or upgrade to special shipping, you get to take part in a risk-free trial with a full refund if it doesn't work for you.

Stomach sleepers generally need a softer mattress with a soft cover layer, to keep their spine in alignment and reduce pressure points. While the Mint mattress is softer than the original, it is still rated as medium firm. This possibly means that consumers who sleep on their stomachs, which is only about 7 percent of adults, may not be totally comfortable on a T&N model.

Additionally, people who prefer sleeping on an extra firm or firm mattress will have to look elsewhere in the mattress industry for a comfortable fit.

The Bottom Line

Only 5 percent of Tuft & Needle mattress buyers return their mattress, even when, for the majority of customers, a full refund is available. This is saying something. Customers benefit from helpful service policies, three mattress options at varying price levels, depending on features, and for many, a risk-free trial.

Currently, we still need to gather a little more feedback from consumers about their experience with this company before we can offer a solid recommendation. Have you purchased a mattress from T&N? Let us know about your experience with a quick review below.
