LAST UPDATED: December 17th, 2020

Layla Sleep is a new player to the memory foam/innovative featured mattress market. With a mid-range price point ($900), the mattress is more expensive than products from companies like Zinus, IKEA, or others and less expensive than products from companies like Tempur-Pedic.

The Layla mattress signature feature is the two-sided, “flippable” capability, which has two varying firmness options. Other differentiators include Copper Gel infusion, cooling, and support. Competitive brands include three other breakout startups in the past five to six years, namely Purple, Casper, and Nectar.

The Good

  • Can Accommodate 2 Types of Firmness
  • Includes Special Features for Cooling, Support
  • Free Shipping for 48 States
  • Order Online, Ship to Any U.S. State
  • Mid-Range Price Point

Can Accommodate 2 Types of Firmness

Layla’s defining feature is its innovative two-way function that features a firm side and a soft side. Buyers can decide which side is more comfortable, without having to return the mattress after the purchase. Especially for customers buying online without trying, this feature provides a huge benefit to reducing the hassle of a long-term purchase.

Includes Special Features for Cooling, Support

Beyond the two-way function, Layla design incorporates special features like Copper Gel cooling and support, key priorities of its founding management team.

Free Shipping for 48 States

For a purchase at this size and weight, free shipping is a perk you can't dismiss. Customers in all U.S. states except for Alaska and Hawaii can enjoy free shipping.

Order Online, Ship to Any U.S. State

Layla’s primary point of purchase is through online shopping, which makes it one of the more accessible products — no need to have a local store or distributor in your city. You can purchase a Layla product online and ship to any U.S. state, although Alaska and Hawaii have an add-on shipping charge of $125.

Mid-Range Price Point

For dual firmness, memory foam, Copper Gel, and supportive features, the price point of $499–$999 is considered mid-range, compared to lower-end models like IKEA ($299–$499), and Zinus ($150–$600).

The Bad

  • Shipping Charge for Alaska and Hawaii
  • Mandatory 2-Week Trial Period
  • Limited Model Types
  • Not Budget-Friendly for Lower-Income Families
  • Less Structure Than Traditional Mattresses

Shipping Charge for Alaska and Hawaii

Customers living in Alaska or Hawaii are required to pay a $125 shipping charge, which is pretty steep for a product in this price range, although understandable given the distance and weight.

Mandatory 2-Week Trial Period

In exchange for a very generous return policy, Layla encourages customers to donate unsatisfactory mattresses to a local shelter or nonprofit. Customers are required to give a two-week time period from date of purchase before returning or exchanging.

Limited Model Types

Only two model types are available: the Memory Foam or Hybrid mattress. For customers who are keen on the function and features of this offering, the other aspects of the purchase will outweigh the lack of variety. But if a range of options and an in-person experience to test out the possibilities is of interest, Layla may not be the right path for you.

Not Budget-Friendly for Lower-Income Families

Families on a budget will find the entry point of $499 for a twin to be steeper than other options, like IKEA or Zinus, who offer comparable memory foam mattresses, at a much lower price point.

Less Structure Than Traditional Mattresses

In particular, the Memory Foam model has less structure than a traditional mattress. The hybrid model appears to make up the gap, but at a much higher — $400+ per model — rate.

The Bottom Line

Layla Sleep mattresses provide comfort, a good value for the cost, and online purchasing and shipping offers accessibility no matter what state you reside in. Reviews are largely positive; continuing innovation and customer-friendly policies mean this company is serious about meeting customers’ needs and building loyalty for the long-haul.
