The Home Depot was started in 1978 by avid DIYers Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank after they were fired from Handy Dan Home Improvement. They envisioned a hardware warehouse store that would offer a huge array of merchandise at reasonable prices with highly trained staff to guide customers at every skill level through any home project.

With help from a few others, Marcus and Blank opened the first store in 1979 and the business quickly grew. Trained staff who could not only sell but also teach was a game changer. By 1981, The Home Depot went public and as of 2021, it employed about 500,000 employees with more than 2,000 stores in three countries.

The Home Depot offers kitchen remodel services, from small changes to full kitchen remodels. With a full remodel, customers have the option to change the layout of the entire space.

The Good

  • Budget Planner
  • Affordable Financing

Budget Planner

The Home Depot’s website includes a useful cost guide for its kitchen remodel service. Remodel costs vary depending on the product options, kitchen size, extent of renovation, etc. This resource is helpful for potential customers as price often determines the direction and scale of a remodel.

Affordable Financing

The two common forms of financing customers choose to use through The Home Depot are the consumer credit card or the The Home Depot Project Loan. Credit worthiness will determine the options for financing and The Home Depot’s financing options can only be used at The Home Depot. The credit card may be a good fit for you if you have the self-discipline to pay off the balance before the introductory time period is over.

The card does not offer any rewards, and customers may find an alternative option with a traditional consumer card may have better terms and perks. Consumers financing larger projects may look to use the The Home Depot Project Loan, but again may find better terms through a personal loan or home equity line of credit. Kitchen remodels can come with a high price tag and having options for payment is appreciated for consumers needing to finance.

Online Design Tool

In the research and planning stages of a kitchen remodel, potential customers can work with a The Home Depot kitchen designer and use this tool on The Home Depot’s website to draw up the layout, select the grade of products, choose appliances, and more. This tool only gives a rough estimate of renovation costs; pricing is based on customer-provided information. A final estimate will be given based on, but not limited to, the actual measurements, final product cost, construction supply costs, permitting requirements, and current labor costs which fluctuate.

The Bad

  • May Use Subcontractors

May Use Subcontractors

Some reviews for The Home Depot’s kitchen remodel service complain of poor communication. Due to the business structure of The Home Depot hiring local installers, there is potential for communication issues. With the use of subcontractors, often the person quoting the project, measuring, or installing are not the same person.

When customers hire a smaller company to do a kitchen remodel, often there is a general contractor on site, monitoring the work subs are doing. Some customers may prefer this approach. The Home Depot will schedule and send subs but is not necessarily functioning as a general contractor could be.

The Bottom Line

If you value a big company name that has the ability to finance a large home improvement project like a kitchen remodel, The Home Depot may be a good choice for you. It is a reputable company that offers many options for every taste. Home Depot uses local, insured, and licensed contractors for the installs. If you prefer not to work with subcontractors, you may want to choose a smaller company.
