Reach
The company is somewhat vague about who exactly is included in their reach, but it is a big one. They claim over 54 million active members throughout their career network, which includes Beyond.com account holders as well as account holders within 1,400 other recruitment sources. 38 million of those members are job seekers.
Resources and Learning Materials
Beyond's learning materials are encompassed in three separate blogs: The Confident Career (for job seekers), Employment Matrix (for recruiters) and News and Advice (miscellaneous links). Anyone can like, share, or email articles, but only Beyond account members can "like" and comment. The Confident Career blog has archives beginning with October 2013 and contains articles about the following employment education topics:
  • General career advice
  • Interview tips
  • Questions of the week
  • Resume help
  • The Confident Candidate series
The Employment Matrix dates back to June 2008 and its top categories include:
  • Industry statistics
  • New recruitment tools
  • Niche recruiting
  • Recruitment best practices
  • Recruitment trends
Special Features
  • Career portfolios: Job seekers are given their personal webpage with a portfolio URL on Beyond.com. They can choose between public, semi-private, and private display of the portfolio contents, which include an about me section, cover letter, work samples, and photo.
  • Connections: All account holders (job seekers and recruiters) can make connection requests in order to access the profile information of other users, which includes the career portfolio contents as well as contact information.
  • Talent communities: Beyond.com has over 500 talent communities that serve as an additional connection point for users with similar interests and careers to share and discuss pertinent issues in their respective industry.
  • Industry data: By selecting a particular industry of workers, users can immediately access the specific number of:
    • Total Beyond members in that industry
    • New members that join per month
    • Daily career alerts
    • Job views per month
  • Beyond offers a mobile app for iOS, Android, and Blackberry devices. Most companies do not have a Blackberry app.
Recruiter-specific features:
  • Text2Hire: This text messaging job ad campaign reaches candidates who have elected to receive mobile updates and often results in quicker responses than that of email alerts.
  • Applicant tracking system (free): This includes a customizable corporate career site, back end management system, and the ability to post jobs for free to that corporate career site.
  • Resume & profile alerts: Recruiters receive profiles via email from job seekers who have paid to promote themselves and from new members that match their hiring needs. Employers can specify the job locations and functions they typically hire for and only receive those alerts.
Experience
Beyond.com, Inc. was branded in 2005, but its roots began with PhillyJobs.com in 1998. PhillyJobs was launched as a free job board serving the Philadelphia area and eventually evolved into the 4B Business Network, then the 4Jobs Career Network. Its parent company, Artemis HR, eventually rebranded 4Jobs and acquisition MegaJobSites.com to Beyond: The Career Network.
Customer Support
Beyond's customer support is adequate. Customer service representatives are available over the phone Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM EST (866-694-JOBS). Users can also submit questions through the help form on the "contact us" section of the website.

The Bad

  • News and advice
News and Advice
The news and advice blog had us (the Review Team) a bit perplexed. Many of the "news" articles are simply trending links to recipes, humor, and other seemingly out-of-place blurbs. Only a smattering of the articles relate to employment and business, and this is the blog with a direct link from the company's homepage. The company is no doubt receiving revenue for the ads and links, so they serve a purpose, but they distract from the goal of most visitors: to make employment progress and connections.

The Bottom Line

Beyond is a fair alternative to LinkedIn as a professional networking-type resource, though it's not nearly as popular (50+million versus 300+million members). The portfolio function gives applicants the opportunity to round out a professional profile with a tagline, photo, and interests. Talent communities give all members a forum to share and discuss industry-related trends. Prices are reasonable for the services offered. Overall, Beyond is a good choice for both job seekers and recruiters.

When I use Beyond, it seems to have decent info. It is not bad, but also has not been my first choice for job boards and data
